Sunday Post #69 and Stacking the Shelves September 11th, 2016

Before I go on with the normal post.  I want to take a minute to remember this day 15 years ago, and how much it will always be a sad but important time in my country's history.

#neverforget

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted  @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news ~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme.   This week was a little less busy.  Although I still had something going almost every night, I still was able to spend time at home and get some reviews and other blogging done, as well as some reading.

Last week on the blog:
And those are the only types of posts I did last week!  Crazy, huh?  Maybe that is why I had so much extra time.  Without doing something like Waiting on Wednesday, where part of the deal is to go comment on other blogs, it saved some extra time from doing that.  But I miss seeing what other books people might know about that I don't, so that isn't something I'll stop doing.  As you can see, I totally met my 2 reviews a week goal.  I had mentioned last week that I might try to do two reviews a day on review days, so that maybe I can get caught up on my reviews, and so that is kind of what I did this week.  You still have time to sign up for my 5th annual September is for Sequels Challenge until this Wednesday!  I completed my first book and review for that with Redeeming Trust by Michelle Sodaro.
I still got my 3 days of walking in, and I was doing really well, got 4 miles in on Monday, but then Wednesday night I only got 2 because I had to go visit my stepdad in the hospital after work that day because he'd had shoulder surgery.  Yesterday though I still got 3 miles.  I got the shirt I made to wear when I go to NOLA StoryCon in the mail as well.  It has to do with the book Before Jamaica Lane by Samantha Young.  And when I posted this picture in the fan group for her on Facebook, she even commented that she liked it!!  Now I can't wait to wear it when I meet her!

I know this is really nerdy too, but I also finally got my very first pair of Toms shoes.  I've always thought they were cute, but with not ever finding them available in stores that I could try them on, I've skipped over ordering shoes online.  But then, after my love and obsessions with the After series, it was one of my rewards for meeting exercise goals, and I finally purchased them, and they came in the mail this week.

I also found out that I was chosen to be a volunteer at Apollycon 2017 in Orlando!  I wanted to go, but didn't know if I could afford to pay, plus most of the tickets that I would have wanted have sold out I think.  But now, I am going to get to meet Anna Todd, plus my new favorite, Kylie Scott!  I've got two sorority sisters who both offered that I could stay with them while I was there, so really I'll just have to find a good price on a plane ticket!

Coming up this week on the blog:
  • Book Blitz:  Avenging Fate by Jennifer Derrick
  • Waiting on Wednesday
  • Cover Reveal:  Rookie Mistake by Alice Ward
  • Book Tour:  Women in the Walls by Amy Lukavics - my post will be featuring true ghost stories and EVPs!
  • Free e-book reviews
  • Possible reviews:  The Portal to Kerberos (Elementals #4) by Michelle Madow, Endless Knight (The Arcana Chronicles #2) by Kresley  Cole, All Lined Up (Rusk University #1) by Cora Carmack (audiobook), Charged (Saints of Denver #2) by Jay Crownover, and Inclusions (Flawless #1) by Emily Duvall
  • Maybe Cover Characteristics - clothes only
Again, trying to get ahead on reviews.  Two of the reviews listed above will count towards my Sequels challenge.  I also just read and adored a free/cheap ebook called Smut by Karina Halle, and LOVED it!  I had planned to wait till at least the end of this week to do a free/cheap ebook mini-review post, but since I loved that one so much, I wanted to go ahead and do a smaller post with only 6 ebooks mentioned, so I wouldn't feel so bad writing a little bit larger sized "mini-review" for that one.  I really want to get back to doing the Cover Characteristics post, as it is a lot of fun!  I also have a lot going on this week, working two week nights at the bookstore for one thing. Then on Saturday, I'll have my stepdad and other family members' birthday celebration dinner, followed by driving to the south side of town, about 45 minutes away, for a former co-worker's wedding.  I must make sure to get my walking in though!

Blog Ahead 2016-Oct

And, I'm going to sign up once again to do the Blog Ahead Challenge sponsored by herding cats and burning soup, to get ready for NaNoWriMo again this year.  While I thought I knew for sure what story I was going to work on this year, reading Smut made me start thinking about trying something else.  But anyway, the goal for this challenge is to get 30 more posts scheduled ahead of time, for November on, than what you start the month of October with.  So it may not be every day in November scheduled, but it will be a lot of it, as well as moving on into December.   I'm counting this post as my sign up post for the challenge!  You can sign up at the link above if you want to join in.

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.  It is a way for us to share the new books we have collected.  Once again, my ebook haul was huge this week.  But my physical book haul was much smaller for a change.

Physical books:

The book on top I got at the Dollar Tree.  The bottom two books I got at one of my school district librarian meetings for free!  Sweet I've read and loved, and Dead of Winter is going to be one of my next reads as I fall in love with the Arcana series.

I got this as a book for trade through a group on Facebook. So excited to read it!

E-galleys:

Got this one from being part of a tour with the Irish Banana blog.  I had another one from Edelweiss, but I can't find the sheet of paper I wrote it on, so I'll have to share it later.

Free or cheap ebooks:
Okay, here we go.

Once again, way too many.  The last four down at the bottom were all from Barnes and Noble for my Nook. The others were all Amazon Kindle.  One of them, Smut, I started reading and finished this week.  There are one or two of the above that I did pay for after winning a $5 gift card.

Okay, that is the long list of what I added to both my physical and virtual shelves this week. What new books did you get this week!

Audiobook Review: Moonlight on Nightingale Way (On Dublin Street #6) by Samantha Young

Book info:
Title:  Moonlight on Nightingale Way
Author:  Samantha Young
Series:  On Dublin Street #6
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Published:  June 2nd, 2015
Source:  Downloaded digital audio from public library

Once again there was a character I almost completely identified with.  Like her I prefer to not have conflict.  So much that I'll often avoid things, because it makes me feel bad to cause any conflict.  I don't know how to explain it, I'll just say that the author described it perfectly.

We have two main characters again, although the story is only told from one of their viewpoints.  Grace is our narrator.  She is living as someone who does copy editing basically for authors, to help them get their books ready to be published.  She is living away from her family, as they weren't the best family, not even really a good one!  It all begins with Logan moving next door to Grace.  Logan is the brother of Shannon, who we met in the last book, Echoes of Scotland Street.  He's just gotten out of prison, where he was was sent for beating up his sister's ex-boyfriend for attacking her.  But anyway, Grace's introduction to Logan is his loud sex life, and one of the girls leaving her underwear out on the stair landing to dry.  Grace and Logan's first visit doesn't go that well.  The two of them immediately butt heads.  They're definitely both attracted to each other, but each has their own reasons for staying away from the other.  Both of them will also have to change some of their preconceived images of each other as new situations come to light.

Then one day, there is a big shocker that shows up on Logan's apartment landing.  Grace is there and because of just being in the right place at the right time, she becomes a major part in this new part of Logan's life.  This change will be a big one.  It will put a damper on Logan's man-whore ways, although after two years in prison, you can't quite blame him for being that way.  And it isn't just Grace's family that is horrible, we get to see even more of Logan's family being their usual selves as we saw in Shannon's book, and not being very accepting of this change in his life.

But being friends has all kinds of benefits for both Grace and Logan, not just the friends with benefits kind though.  Grace gets to meet Joss through Logan and Shannon, and Joss is one of her favorite authors.  And then there is being part of a new family like the Carmichaels and co.  It is a wonderful group of people, as we know from reading all the books.

I won't go on and spoil any more of the story.  Just know that as usual the sex is steamy, and the writing is such that you won't want to put it down to do anything else.

The last 7% of the story was an epilogue that went back and visited all of our beloved couples from the other books.  And I loved it.  But I knew it kind of meant the series is over, which the author says she has no plans to go back to that story at this time.  But I am going to miss my On Dublin Street family.  Even though I will be keeping my Nate Sawyer book around to pick up and read whenever I feel like it.  Not to mention I get to meet the author at the end of the month!  So excited!  Only 3 weeks from today I should be in New Orleans getting to meet Samantha Young, and will hopefully be wearing the Nate Sawyer shirt I designed for myself on Cafe Press.  If you haven't started this series yet, you need to pick it up!

Review: Redeeming Trust by Michelle Sodaro (September Sequels #1)

Book info:
Title:  Redeeming Trust
Author:  Michelle Sodaro
Series:  sequel to Broken Trust
Genre:  Contemporary romance
Published:  August 15th, 2016
Source:  Purchased book myself

This is the sequel to the book Broken Trust, that I read and reviewed earlier this year.  You can read my review of it by clicking on the title linked in the book info above.  I was definitely ready to read and find out just where the author was going to take the dynamic character of Ali from the first book, and her attraction to Officer Biceps.

So this book still has the two characters, Sam and Ben, from the first book. Ben is Ali's brother, and he is getting ready to marry Sam.  One neat thing I liked in this book was that the author added a little bonus prequel novella, giving us the story of when Sam and Ali actually met for the first time, before the meeting at the beginning of Broken Trust.  Turns out that Sam was doing caricatures at the Renaissance Festival one time when she saw this very bright, spunky girl named Ali.  The two women didn't cross paths again until the first book.  Now things are going well for Sam and Ben.  So book two is supposed to be Ali's story.  And we have another main character, her love interest, Officer Biceps, otherwise known as Lieutenant Vincent Michaels.

This story begins with a break-in and some graffiti at Ali's music store AliCat Records.  Vincent gets called in to the crime scene, and of course ends up on the case.  They're trying to find out who could be the one that broke in, and the spray painting gives a hint, something about always loving Ali?  So at that point, it seems as if maybe it was a kind of stalkerish guy that Ali had almost dated at one time.  Ali doesn't really date guys for too long, she's always been kind of a love in the moment person, not wanting to get too serious.  This is partly because of seeing what happened with her grandparents, when her grandmother died, and how it changed her grandfather.  So this is the main theme of the story, finding out who could be causing the trouble for or possibly be after Ali.    But we also have a pretty big part of the story that is still Ben and Sam.  It makes sense, as Ali was a big part of their story. But we're dealing with Ben and Sam preparing to get married, working on Ben's dream of opening his home for runaways, as well as other family issues that will pop up.

Now while Vincent may sound like he is going to be perfect, he has his own issues.  One being that he is kind of taking care of his sister's son Lucas, while she is in rehab or off in her own world.  Ali also worries that a man like Vincent, someone who has dedicated his life to upholding the rules/laws, will not want to be with her, or at least not unless she would tone herself down, and become more "normal".  Times where he has been a gentleman, and not taken advantage of situations that were emotional, well she felt he was rejecting her, and so does not know if he really wants her.  So you have that conflict in their relationship as well.

I won't tell you any more, you should read and find it all out yourself.

The story is a good one.  The characters are all pretty good as well.  As with the last book, there was a lot of potential in the story.  And I love the Kansas City setting, being as that is where I live, and have lived my whole life!

Unfortunately I still had some of my normal independently published book issues.  At first there was just the occasional type/grammar issue, that probably was just from not having several people do a good edit.  But at the end of the book, I'm guessing that the author was just really excited to get it finished and published, and possibly the editor was too into the story to catch things.  But there were several pages that had at least one error for either every other, or every paragraph.  Little things, such as "he" instead of "she", or other similar words that were real words, they just weren't spelled correctly or used grammatically correctly.  Again, while I figure that it was probably just due to rushing to get finished, at one point I almost wondered if something was happening in the final publishing program that cut letters off?

I also had a little bit of trouble with some descriptions or words used to describe that felt like they were being used over and over.  I just found myself thinking, yeah, I get that already.

Other than the little errors like typos that I mentioned above, the book definitely overcame the problems I was having by the end for the most part.

While you're here, this is the first book that goes toward fulfilling my September is for Sequels Challenge that I'm hosting.  You can still sign up before the 15th, this Thursday.  Go check it out HERE.

Review: His Every Need (Beauty and the Brit #1) by Terri L. Austin

Book info:
Title:  His Every Need
Author:  Terri L. Austin
Series:  Beauty and the Brit #1
Genre:  Contemporary romance
Published:  August 5th, 2014
Source:  I purchased from bookstore where I work

I didn't realize that the book, His Kind of Trouble, was part of a series, and not the first one in the series, until of course I looked on Goodreads.   But, I wanted to read the first story because it was the story of that character, Monica's older sister Allie.  Now, in that book, I didn't like Allie.  She seemed like a mean older sister.  So as I read this one, I went into it not knowing how I'd feel.  But Allie's story definitely changed my mind on her, and made me see her side against Monica.  This first book made you not as big a fan of Monica's.  So it was definitely an interesting way to see characters and how they see the people around themselves.

This story is how Allie tries to save her father's house from the rich man who has won it from her father.  His name is Trevor, and Allie decides to go beg him for the house back, telling him all about it has been her family's house since their mother died, and that it is all they have left.  Allie has to be the adult in the family now, her dad is not much help.  Allie notices that Trevor seems to find her physically attractive and so she offers him anything he wants if he will just let them keep the house.  They set up a contract and he makes her move in with him.  She then has to make her family think that she is just working for him as a personal assistant.  But while she's gone one of her younger sisters, Monica, really starts rebelling and even runs away to live with her boyfriend.  The youngest sister, Brynn, ends up feeling almost deserted and horrified when their dad starts dating someone who works at her school.

Of course Trevor comes from a bad family background, and as things between him and Allie start to get more friendly and make the relationship to be more of an actual relationship, his parents show up.  And they are going to get remarried, to each other.  Trevor can't stand dealing with them and is fed up with them just barging into his life and wanting to try to "make it up to him" all that they ruined when he was a child.  Of course this leads to a backslide in the relationship between Trevor and Allie.  Trevor will set a detective out to find this boyfriend of Monica's and try to find where they've been holing up.

Of course as I'd already read the second book, I already know how it's going to end for the most part. And as it is a romance, you can probably guess it will be a HEA ending as well.  It definitely has its steamy parts, just like the second book.  And I loved that Trevor was British, who doesn't love a sexy British guy?  A good read, and I'm now going to have to get a hold of the third book, His to Keep, and get Brynn's story when she is grown up.

Review: The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich

Book info:
Title:  The Dead House
Author:  Dawn Kurtagich
Genre:  YA Horror
Published:  September 15th, 2015
Source:  ARC won in giveaway October 2015

I won this from a Halloween giveaway last year on another blog.  And sadly, I didn't get around to reading it until this summer when I tried to do a challenge.  Overall I really enjoyed it!  I could totally see this being done as a horror movie.  And if you've read any of my reviews, you'll know that truly I consider that a pretty high compliment.  I know that Kurtagich will be a go-to author for scary stories for me from now on.

The story is told in diary entries and interviews/police records.  Supposedly all of this happened 20 years ago, and just recently the diary of Kaitlyn Johnson.  But there are not any actual records of Kaitlyn, only Carly Johnson.  From the story we learn that Kaitlyn was Carly's "second personality" that only came out at night.  Technically this is called Dissociative Identity Disorder, as is explained by the author at the end of the book.  The way a lot of it was told was very descriptive.  It really put me right into the scary moments and locations of the book.  I also enjoyed the Scottish voodoo/mystical type of magic that was part of the story.  It is always fascinating to me to learn about things like that. To realize that the voodoo that I know of, isn't the only one that is out there.

In the end there was a big fire that killed as well as burned down part of the school where this mostly takes place.  It is interesting to see just how long Carly/Kaitlyn existed.  I would have loved to get more of the family background from before all of this.  But the little sister moments, as well as memories from the girls and others in their lives did give the story an even more twisted aspect.  You'll spend the whole time wondering who could really be behind all of the death and vandalism that goes on.  While it seems that there is no way Kaitlyn could do all of it, there are times that it seems obvious that everyone would think it was her.

I highly recommend this as a scary book, with most questions answered at the end, but not all.  Enough is left open that it will leave you thinking long after you finish it.

Audiobook Review: Lead (Stage Dive #3) by Kylie Scott

Book info:
Title:  Lead
Author:  Kylie Scott
Series:  Stage Dive #3
Genre:  Rock star NA romance
Published:  November 25th, 2014
Source:  Downloaded digital audio from public library

Once again I was not disappointed in a book by the author Kylie Scott.  I've enjoyed all her books so far, and while the second one, Play, was my favorite, none of them have not been good.  The first book, Lick, was one I read as a free ebook and enjoyed, although I do kind of want to go back and listen to it as an audiobook, not to mention listen for my favorite Malcolm in the book.  Because he is the reason I loved book 2, and in all the books I've read since, he still steals the show whenever his character is in a scene.  In fact, at 2% in, I was loving how Mal totally made the beginning perfect.

This book is Jimmy and Lena's book.  Jimmy wasn't a member of the band that I had felt anything good for.  He'd been kind of a dick in the first two books, of course partly because he had been just out of rehab and had a pretty big chip on his shoulder.  Plus, lead singer, what else do you expect?  Lena got hired to be his sober companion/secretary.  While Lena is perfect in this position, she finds that she is definitely attracted physically to Jimmy.  But she knows he isn't interested in her, and she has to keep it professional.  When Jimmy finds out how she seems to feel about him, he goes about trying to help her get over him.  It includes setting her up on dates with other guys, including Ben, the last member of the band that is single, as well as Reece, the guy that had been Anne's boss/former crush in the last book.  Of course neither date worked out, many reasons, including the fact that Jimmy kind of sabotaged them both in a way.  Next Jimmy figures to get it out of her system, and his own, by having sex with her.  Which turns him into a normal jerk of a guy as you'd expect.  And at that point, Lena tries to find a new assistant for Jimmy, needing to get away from him.  But everyone, the other band members, and Jimmy, sabotage the meeting with the guy she's found that would be a perfect replacement.  Other than the fact that Jimmy does have feelings for Lena.  But we meet and learn more about Jimmy and Dave's mother.  And thanks to their mom Jimmy doesn't think he can love, or that anyone can love him.  So he'll have to figure out before it's too late if what he feels for Lean is love, or if he can live without her.

As I said, I still don't know that I ever really started to "like" Jimmy.  He's pretty much an ass the whole book.  But the sex scenes, once we actually got to them, were pretty good.  As I mentioned with Mal, every time he showed up I was smiling the whole time he was there.  Another great book by Kylie Scott, and definitely one to be recommended!

Review: Calendar Girl Volume 2 (Calendar Girl #4-6) by Audrey Carlan

Book info:
Title:  Calendar Girl Volume 2
Author:  Audrey Carlan
Series:  Calendar Girl:  #4-6 - April, May, June
Genre:  Contemporary Romance
Published:  October 27th, 2015
Source:  I purchased paperback copy at bookstore where I work

Now, I didn't enjoy the first story in this as much as the first book, but then the second story totally brought me back. The third story wasn't great to begin with, but it had an ending that really was intense and made me very eager to get ahold of Volume 3.  If you haven't read the first volume which covered January, February, and March, you can go read my review of that HERE.

The book starts off in April when Mia is going to spend the month with a professional baseball player.  Now, I was pretty excited about this, as baseball players are probably my favorite athletes, but the story didn't end up the way you'd think.  She starts off in Boston and is supposed to portray a normal "girlfriend" for Mason Murphy, who is considered quite the man-whore. But in order to get some sponsors, he needs to tone his image down.  So Mia is hired by a PR person for Mason named Rachel. But when she gets there, she can see that Rachel actually kind of likes Mason, except for his slutty ways.  And really, Mia can also tell that Mason kinda likes Rachel.  So while Mia does the public image thing for Mason, she works to be a matchmaker for the two in the background.  She misses Wes, the guy from January, but she knew that she had to tell him not to wait, because she had to complete this year in order to get the money she needed to pay off the people her father owed.  Unfortunately he does take her up on this, as she sees gossip magazine pictures of him with a famous actress, who even answers his phone when Mia tries to call him one time.

May is a much better month.  Mia gets to go to Hawaii to be a model, and even better, she gets to take her best friend Ginelle, and her younger sister Maddy with her!  But there are things going on at home.  Maddy has a new boyfriend, and it seems to be pretty serious.  Mia is worried about her sister, but when she is invited to meet with Maddy's boyfriend Matt's parents for dinner, she at least gets to see that they are good people and that they really care about Maddy.  And it does give Mia a bit of relief about leaving Maddy alone while she is off earning money. But back to Hawaii.  Her first day she meets a Samoan model named Tai.  Now, of course, what I picture is a very large guy, and he is described that way, but I have to say that I'm guessing he's not what I'm thinking of, not large in a fat way, but just large as a man overall.  Mia's still feeling a bit jealous about Wes, even though she knows it isn't fair to him.  And so she and Tai have a lot of fun.  And the sex, let's just say the sex this month for Mia is pretty darn intense.  Extremely insane!  To the point that she even passes out from it one time.  Tai is a big boy in every way.  Now she knows according to one of his family members that Mia will not be the forever girl for him, and before Mia leaves, she may have to try to do a little matchmaking for him again when the right girl does show up.  But as with all of the guys so far, she leaves with him as a best friend.

The final month in the book, June, Mia is sent to Washington D.C. to pose as the girlfriend of an older wealthy man, who is the father of a young, attractive Senator.  She knows right away that the man, Warren, isn't interested in her for sex, he just needs the "arm candy" to impress the other men who do the same.  It turns out that once again there is already someone else in his life, someone that he cares about, and has ever since his wife, the mother of his son Aaron the senator, passed away.  At first Mia does flirt with Aaron a little bit.  But soon, while Mia does her best to help Warren in business with the schmoozing, Aaron turns into a bit of a pervert.  Walking into her room while she's asleep and having a very erotic dream about Wes, Aaron decides he is going to join her in bed, that her being naked and moaning in her sleep means she wants someone to take care of that.  Later one when Aaron finds out about the romance between his father and this other woman, it sends Aaron a little bit over the edge, and he really comes after Mia.  Fortunately Mia has friends who will be there in her time of need, even when things get to a pretty scary part.

We get a tiny excerpt for July, knowing that Mia will be going to be in a video for a Latin rapper.  I will be interested to see where the story goes next.  And of course I need to know how things will move forward with Wes, as the two of them have to keep things the way they are so that Mia can finish her year of earning money.
