Three YA ARCs, One YA Audiobook, and One YA Finished Copy Mini-Reviews

Finally, finally getting around to posting a review on a book I read clear back in April, because I was waiting until I finished its sequel, an ARC I had, so I could review them together.  Then another book that I just finished reading this past week, an ARC that was top of my list to get at ALA this past summer.  And the other two are a free audiobook I got from the Sync program this summer, as well as another ARC I received from a publisher.

Labyrinth Lost (Brooklyn Brujas #1) by Zoraida CordovaGenre:  YA Paranormal
Release Date:  September 6th, 2016
Publisher:  Sourcebooks Fire
Source:  Purchased finished hardcover copy.
My rating:  5 stars

Now, I first bought this because I was going to get to meet the author at NOLA StoryCon that same month it was published.  So I have had this autographed copy sitting on my shelves for over a year while I just didn't get around to reading it for one reason or another.  Then last spring, the publishers sent me an ARC of the sequel to the book, and I thought I would go ahead and get this one read and jump right into the sequel.  I picked this one up and got sucked right in, and as you can tell from my 5 star rating, I loved it!  But then, I had other books on my review calendar that I had to get to, and so the sequel got pushed back and back.  I waited to do the review for this one, because I wanted to do them together.  So now, I'm finally getting around to it, because I made myself finally finish the second one, even though I had other review books.  I loved the world of these witches, or brujas.  Their own mythology and spells that really drew me in to find out just how it all worked.  I love the cultural aspects of this family and story, as well as the real world of Brooklyn that was the background setting for all of this drama.  I can now highly recommend this to my students based on my own reading.  Before I share the synopsis for this one, here is the picture I took with the author when I met her at NOLA StoryCon.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
Nothing says Happy Birthday like summoning the spirits of your dead relatives.

Alex is a bruja, the most powerful witch in a generation...and she hates magic. At her Deathday celebration, Alex performs a spell to rid herself of her power. But it backfires. Her whole family vanishes into thin air, leaving her alone with Nova, a brujo boy she can't trust. A boy whose intentions are as dark as the strange marks on his skin.

The only way to get her family back is to travel with Nova to Los Lagos, a land in-between, as dark as Limbo and as strange as Wonderland...

Bruja Born (Brooklyn Brujas #2) by Zoraida Cordova:
Genre:  YA Paranormal
Release Date:  June 5th, 2018

Publisher:  Sourcebooks Fire
Source:  Received ARC from publisher which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  4 stars

Something about this one didn't grab me as much as the book before.  I don't know why, because I still enjoyed it though.  The sad thing is that my ARC of this one got messed up pretty bad on my trip back from ALA.  I put it in a regular duffel bag that got soaked in the rain in New Orleans as it was being loaded onto the plane I guess.  It was still readable. But it is in horrible condition now.  I wouldn't want it, but I'm going to keep it since it is the sequel to the first book and I just am.  The first book was the story of Alex, one of the three sisters in the family.  This book is about her older sister, Lula.  When things go wrong for Lula, boyfriend problems, then a horrible accident that causes her to make choices no witch/bruja should make, things now go wrong for all those around her as well.  We get a little back into the culture from the first book, until the Mortiz family starts getting shunned not only from what Lula has done, but also from what her sister Alex did in book one.  We meet some other big players in this magical world because of the separation between all the bruja families.  Lula must find out if these other players or organizations are there to help, or what their real motives are when they do help her.  I still kind of love Nova from book one, and I like the bit of romance that Lula gets closer to the end of this one.  I'm looking forward to the final book that is maybe coming out next year, as the youngest sister had some things happening in this one that suggest some major events for that story.  Another book I need to get in for my students to read.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
Three sisters. One spell. Countless dead.

Lula Mortiz feels like an outsider. Her sister's newfound Encantrix powers have wounded her in ways that Lula's bruja healing powers can't fix, and she longs for the comfort her family once brought her. Thank the Deos for Maks, her sweet, steady boyfriend who sees the beauty within her and brings light to her life.

Then a bus crash turns Lula's world upside down. Her classmates are all dead, including Maks. But Lula was born to heal, to fix. She can bring Maks back, even if it means seeking help from her sisters and defying Death herself. But magic that defies the laws of the deos is dangerous. Unpredictable. And when the dust settles, Maks isn't the only one who's been brought back...

Echoes by Alice Reeds:
Genre:  YA Thriller
Release Date:  August 7th, 2018

Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Source:  ARC received from Publisher which did not influence my review
My rating:  2 stars

If you have been following me, you'll know that if I am going to rate a book lower than 2 stars, usually it's one I didn't finish.  This book had soooooooo much potential!  And I'll say this, it kept me reading until the very end.  But then, the ending, let me just say I was so angry at the end!  There were elements of this story that totally had the feeling of that tv show, Lost.  Not only throughout the story, but in how much that ending ticked me off!  I got to the end, there were no explanations of any sort, NONE!  There were parts that were possibly either earlier moments or flashbacks, or maybe they were alternate timelines or realities.  Or maybe other parts of the story were memories that weren't real.  Someone was after them, but why?  Did they want to kill them, or were they experimenting on them?  When I finished I totally felt like I had wasted my time reading this. The details and situations I had overlooked, expecting some sort of answers or something, ANYTHING at the end, all came crashing back with that ending.  I may be an unpopular opinion on this one, I don't know, haven't read all the other reviews, but man.  I do NOT recommend this one.  Unless you want to go read it, and then come back and tell me what I missed.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
They wake on a deserted island. Fiona and Miles, high school enemies now stranded together. No memory of how they got there. No plan to follow, no hope to hold on to.

Each step forward reveals the mystery behind the forces that brought them here. And soon, the most chilling discovery: something else is on the island with them.

Something that won't let them leave alive.

Imposters (Uglies #5) by Scott Westerfeld:
Genre:  YA Dystopian
Release Date:  September 11th, 2018

Publisher:  Scholastic Press
Source:  ARC received from Publisher which did not influence my review
My rating:  4 stars

This was one of my unicorn ARCs to get at ALA this summer.  The Uglies series is one of my all time favorite series, maybe even one of the first YA books that got me back into YA when I was teaching.  So when I heard there was going to be another book in the series, I was very excited.  Honestly, this book didn't disappoint in a new addition to the story.  Obviously it had been a while since I'd finished the first four books, so I was worried I wouldn't quite be able to jump right back in.  Fortunately, just a short way into the book, the earlier books were caught up to in a perfect way to not just be an info dump.  Not only did we get a refresher, but we also got filled in on the things that had happened between those books and this one.  I like the new characters, I like the intrigue, and I like how to defeat the real enemy, groups that may not have gotten along before must work together now.  There was a part in this that I definitely got a hint of a poke at today's  real world climate and culture, and I liked it as well.  Of course we're left in a way that we need to continue into another book, so I'll be eagerly awaiting that as well, and hopeful that I will get that one early as well.  Also, I got to meet the author again when I got this, so here is my picture of that.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
Frey and Rafi are inseparable . . . but very few people have ever seen them together. This is because Frey is Rafi’s double, raised in the shadows of their rich father’s fortress. While Rafi has been taught to charm, Frey has been taught to kill. Frey only exists to protect her sister. There is no other part of her life. Frey has never been out in the world on her own – until her father sends her in Rafi’s place to act as collateral for a dangerous deal. Everyone thinks she’s her sister – but Col, the son of a rival leader, is starting to get close enough to tell the difference. As the stakes grow higher and higher, Frey must decide whether she can trust him – or anyone in her life.

How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather:

Genre:  YA Thriller/Historical
Release Date:  July 26th, 2016

Publisher:  Knopf Books for Young Readers
Source:  Audiobook received free through Sync Audiobooks for Teens 2018 Program
My rating:  5 stars

I loved this book.  I actually kind of thought I would, I'd been interested in reading it for a long time. When I saw it was one of the books available this past summer through the Sync summer audiobook program, I immediately downloaded it, and listened to it pretty soon afterwards.  One really cool part was the author read her own book, which I think definitely means a lot of the inflections and way things are read out loud was done the way the author intended, obviously.  All throughout the book we got clues dropped as to who could be causing all the things that were happening.  And just when I'd think it had to be one of those people, something else would happen that totally pointed me in the opposite direction.  A little over halfway through, it seemed to get to a point that we could be wrapping the whole story up, and I wondered where else it could go.  But the author moved it in such a way that I kept on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next.  I really could see this as a movie, and would LOVE to see it as a movie.  I love how it ended, and it is one that I am definitely recommending to my students whenever I get the chance.  So glad I got the chance to listen to this, and I'll definitely be looking into reading the sequel.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
It's the Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls in a debut novel from one of the descendants of Cotton Mather, where the trials of high school start to feel like a modern day witch hunt for a teen with all the wrong connections to Salem’s past.

Salem, Massachusetts is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trials and almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves The Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were?

If dealing with that weren't enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real live (well technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries old curse affecting anyone with ties to the trials. Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with The Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it's Salem. But history may be about to repeat itself.

Top Ten Books I'm Thankful For

Top Ten Tuesday is sponsored by The Broke and The Bookish.

I am going to choose books that for some reason either made me learn or feel something that I'll never forget and that I am thankful for whatever it was.  Books that really made something happen or change in my life.  I'll post a picture along with one sentence or so with each book to tell you why I'm thankful for that book.

 1.

I am thankful to this series because for a while, it brought me and one of my younger sisters really close.  So close that when she moved to New York City, I had to go visit her when the last movies were coming out, because we had the tradition of seeing them at the midnight premieres for each one.  It also led me to get my first tattoo, the cover of Twilight.

2.

I am thankful that I read this and then fell in love with JLA, and so then I had to sign up to go to the NOLA Storycon in 2016 so I could meet her, which meant I also decided to try to read books by the new authors that would be at that convention, which meant I fell in love with some of my now all time favorite authors like Samantha Young and Jay Crownover.

3.

This was the first book I read by Maggie Stiefvater, which made me fall in love with her books. Then, because I loved her books, I went to see her when she came on tour to my town, and I also ended up meeting and finding two more favorite authors:  Brenna Yovanoff and Tessa Gratton, because they happened to be with her on tour.  Because of that, when I got to go and see them all again at BEA one year, my picture of seeing them got picked by a publisher to put in a biography of Maggie, and now I have a published photo!

4.

This book was one of the first e-galleys I ever read from Netgalley.  I then looked up the author on Twitter and followed her, tweeting to tell her how much I loved her book. When I went to visit my sister in NYC as I mentioned above, she followed my tweets, and I asked if I could possibly meet her somewhere and get an autograph. She was so awesome that she did a crazy thing and met this crazy fan and we ended up going and getting a drink and talking for a long time!  It was one of the neatest experiences of my life!

5.

I read this book in college, while I was working on getting a degree in Earth Science Education.  I really remembered my earlier love of dinosaurs and fossils during this time.  My parents found an article in a newspaper about the museum where this paleontologist worked at the time, and that they let people come work on their dig, well, for a price.  My parents ended up paying for me to go spend a week there, as a college graduation present.  Another of the greatest moments of my life.

6.

This series.  I just loved it so much!  I couldn't stop reading!  It is the reason I got my 2nd tattoo.

7.

Okay, this might be a little silly of a "thank you", but this book gave me my all-time book boyfriend.  It was Daemon Black, who is till one of my top 10 all time, but Mal is # 1.

8.

My #2 all time book boyfriend is Nate, and this is another author I'm glad I read because of getting to meet her at NOLA StoryCon, because I thought she was another one of the coolest authors ever.

9.

I'm going to pick this one because it helped me to feel like I should get back to writing the romance I had started several years ago, as well as giving me the inspiration for the one I started last November that I need to finish!

10.

I'm going to pick this book because I loved it so much that I decided to read it with my group of students in the class that we had no curriculum for.  It is really one that I enjoyed getting in depth with them, and caused me to decide to go ahead and get certified to teach English, which in turn I think helped me with finally getting to be a school librarian.

So, can you think of any books that you are grateful for?

Let's Celebrate Year Number Eight!

Guess whose blog is turning eight?  You got it!  Lisa Loves Literature, ME!!!  I can't believe it has been that long.  But I've had a great time!  This past year has had some ups and downs, more ups than downs though.  Since my last blogoversary:
  • I attended NOLA Storycon and got to meet a bunch of my new favorite authors.

Samantha Young

Jay Crownover (she takes the best selfies)

Jennifer L. Armentrout, the main reason I bought a ticket for NOLA Storycon

  • Attended the very first Kinky In Kansas City Romance Author convention and met some other  new favorite authors and hot cover models.

Jonny James (cover model)

Amy Daws

Kayti McGee
  • Got to be a volunteer at Apollycon in Orlando and meet other favorite authors (as well as other hot cover models)!!!!  While there, I also got to visit the Harry Potter park at Universal Studios.

Kylie Scott

Anna Todd, the main reason I first signed up to be an ApollyCon volunteer

All the hot cover models from JLA's books, along with JLA herself!

Butter Beer, the first thing I HAD to get at Universal Studios

  • In November I won NaNoWriMo for the 2nd time!  I didn't finish my novel that I'd started, but I am still working on it.
  • I also got a couple cool sponsors for my blogs, one was UberPrints.com - who let me design a free t-shirt to show how easy and fun it is.  The other was USB Memory Direct, and I got some cool USB drives to pass out as business cards with my blog design in them.

  • I got to meet so many more authors than what I showed you above.  I got a trip to New Orleans for NOLA StoryCon, a trip to Orlando for Apollycon, but I also visited Albuquerque, New Mexico for a school related conference, and went to back Orlando with my family - specifically to see my 5 year old niece's first time at Disneyworld.

Not all things were great though.  I did lose a friend.  My former writing buddy, one that I've shared her self-published books here on my blog in past Blogoversaries, as well as my own reviews.  She didn't like the way I reviewed her books, but didn't bother to read the reviews once I sent her a link, waited months afterward when someone else pointed them out.  Anyway, it's a long story, and time for me to move on.  And then last month, stupid Photobucket changed how they worked, and now my background and other things on my blog are all messed up. The problem is that someone designed it all for me, and I can't get ahold of them through email or any way anymore, so I don't know how to fix it!

Since it is my 8th Blogoversary, I want to give away 8 prizes.  Here are the options:

    1. Your choice of any Alice Clayton book under $10 from The Book Depository (INT)
    2.  Any of the mass market copies of the Stage Dive series by Kylie Scott (TBD) (INT)
    3. Two winners will get to pick 2-3 books from my Books for Trade pile.  Here is the  most recent photo, although there may be more or different books there by the end of the month. US only, sorry, I can only afford so much postage.
    4.   E-book copies of two of my favorite books by a new favorite author Nicole Archer:  Road-Tripped and Head-Tripped. (Open to anyone who can accept a Kindle or Nook e-book)
    5. $5.00 Amazon Gift Card or Barnes and Noble if you'd prefer
    6. Coloring Book (US only, sorry, I can only afford that postage)
    7. Samplers and Swag - Swag not pictured (US only, postage is too expensive)
    8. Your choice of any book I've read since last September from The Book Depository. (INT) Check out those books on my Goodreads page, just scroll back till you get all the way to last September to get an idea of what books, it is a lot to choose from!

Let's Get 2016 Over With a Giveaway - Part 4 (US Only)

Week 4 starting now, and will end earlier since Sunday is the first of 2017!

Okay, 2016 has really started to end the year with a bang! And not a good one!  Since my last giveaway, we've lost both George Michael and Carrie Fisher!  People are going about trying to save Betty Green now.   We've lost so many other big names this year, Gene Wilder, David Bowie, and Prince just to name a few.  I'm so glad that I got the chance to see Prince in concert once in my lifetime.  Not to mention that today they mentioned that Stan Lee just turned 94, and I hope that doesn't jinx him!!!  There has been such craziness with politics, I won't go into specifics, as that is part of the problem, but it's been so crazy that family members have been split because of this.

I've had some good things happen, I got to go to the NOLA Storycon and meet some of my favorite authors, Jennifer L. Armentrout, Samantha Young, and Jay Crownover were my very very favorites.  I won NaNoWriMo for the 2nd time by writing my full 50,000 words.  I've had a few publishers start sending me things without me having to reach out to them first.  So I feel like my blog might finally be getting where I want it to be.  I've been reading a ton of books this year.  I bumped my goal on Goodreads up over 50 books for the year compared to last year.  I got a new tattoo. I got picked to be a volunteer at Apollycon 2017!  So hopefully next year I can add that to a good thing, especially since I cannot wait to meet Anna Todd, the books that I am in love with and got a tattoo for.  Not to mention Kylie Scott is going to be there, and I am so in love with her books!

One thing that I totally need to work on is all the books I have that I don't know when I'm going to get to.  I've been taking a lot of them to my school library.  I figure that way they'll get the chance for other people, my students, to read them, and when I have time or am in the mood for one of them, I'll still know where they are to check out and read.  Unfortunately, there are a lot of books I have that are ARCs or else my library already has, or maybe they're not in good enough condition that I can put them in my library.  And this is where I'm setting up a giveaway.  Below are the books that I'm looking to get rid of through a giveaway, or there a few newer ARCs I might be willing to trade for other ARCs if you want them.

I have one last item you can pick as one of your two books.  A year ago my sister asked me if I wanted to buy a coloring book that a friend of hers had created.  It's very neat, but it's not really my style of coloring book, but it is so darn cool!  If you're interested, you can pick this as one of your two choices!  Here is a picture of the coloring book:

So, if you see any ARCs you'd like to trade for, you can always let me know in the comments.  Otherwise, what I plan to do is pick two winners every week for the rest of December, and I am going to fill a box with 4 or 5 books from the pictures above.  Newer, older, ARCs, finished, etc.  They will most likely be surprise boxes. But we'll see how I feel when I draw the winners, I may let them come pick what four books they want!  Or at least pick one or two to go with two that I pick.
And in each box, I will include some swag and book samplers I have.  Here are pictures of the swag I have.  I would be willing to trade any of it for ARCs I'm looking for as well!

You can see some temporary tattoos in the picture on the left.  Along with some post cards, and an Epic Reads book of new titles.
So, I think I know what new goals and challenges I will participate in for my blog next year, although I do still need to reflect on how 2016 went.  One thing I haven't had time for is as many posts with GIFs as I enjoy.  So enjoy this one, and then go enter the contest in the Rafflecopter below it!

Top 10 of 2016 Day 1 - Best Books I've Read in 2016

Top 10 of 2016
Okay, I'm starting a day late, but post-dating this so it shows up on Monday!  I participated last year, so decided to do this again this year as the year is about to come to a close.  This challenge is sponsored by Fiktshun, Tales of a Ravenous Reader, and Dark Faerie Tales.  If you decide to join in, make sure to sign up at one of their sites on the linky.

Let's start with my favorite/best books of 2016.  Not all are new, this is just based on what I read this year.  And these are the books that have stayed with me and that I keep thinking about even after I've read them.  I've linked the photos to take you back to my review if you want to check that out.

1.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/02/series-review-and-giveaway-after-series.html

I have to pick the whole After series by Anna Todd.  I feel in love with Hardin and Tessa, and still can't put it down if I pick the book up, or stop listening when I start the audiobooks.

2.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/06/audiobook-review-before-jamaica-lane-on.html

While this isn't the first in the series, or even the first book that introduced me to Samantha Young, and I did start her books this year, Before Jamaica Lane will be a forever favorite of mine.  My copy of it sits on my coffee table in my living room and I pick it up and re-read bits and pieces of it all the time.  Finding it hard to put down once I pick it up.  Nate Sawyer is my perfect book boyfriend.  He even beat out Daemon Black from the Lux series by JLA.

3.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/10/two-audiobook-reviews-hudson-valley.html

This is the 2nd book that I read by Alice Clayton this year, but it cemented her as one of my new favorite authors.  And I loved the main character, as well as it totally reinforced my working on having confidence in the figure that I have.  The humor of these characters and stories, as well as the emotions, this book is a good one.  Of course it was the covers that first grabbed my attention, but the story is even better and totally worth the embarrassment of holding it in public.

4.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/12/series-review-royals-series-books-1-3.html

There was a ton of hype about this throughout the year, and once I started reading it when the ebook went on sale, I was hooked and loved it.  So much that even though I bought the ebooks, I still had to own the paperback copies to put on my shelf.

5.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/04/audiobook-review-rule-marked-men-1-by.html

This is the book that introduced me to Jay Crownover's world of Marked Men.  I decided to try her books before I got the chance to meet her at NOLA StoryCon last October.  And I was hooked.  I'd really started getting into tattooed boys the past few years, and now, let's just say I'm wanting to find out some more about boys with certain types of piercings.  I love this world, and plan to read all of Crownover's books.

6.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/08/review-poison-princess-arcana.html

I'd been seeing this book around a lot, and when I finally got a copy, specifically to read before I got to meet the author, again at NOLA Storycon, I was hooked.  I loved the Cajun accent of Jack.  I loved him.  As I continued in the series later on, I fell in love with all the books, although I have the little short book and one more to read.

7.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/12/review-teach-me-to-forget-by-erica-m.html

This is a book I read just a few weeks ago.  And it really blew me away.  I compare it to Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher in how it really grabbed me.

8.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/07/review-and-i-darken-by-kiersten-white.html

I loved this reimagining of the true Dracula story, where Dracula was a girl.  I know it has a bit of mixed reviews, but I loved it, and can't wait for the sequel!

9.
http://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/09/five-new-adultromance-freecheap-e-book.html

So, this is a book that totally helped me with my thoughts about writing a New Adult romance book for NaNoWriMo this year.  I loved the whole story, it had great sexy scenes, definite emotional bits, and was just an all around good story.

10.
https://misclisa.blogspot.com/2016/12/review-road-tripped-ad-agency-1-by.html

This book was hilarious!  But it also had bits that made me cry.  When I went to do my review and picked it up to find a certain bit, I was sucked right back in and wanted to just re-read the whole thing.  I look forward to more books from this debut author!

Notice that for a change, this year most of my top books are adult or new adult, whereas last year they were mostly YA.

Here are some runner ups, that I had to highlight.
