An Interview with Alan Janney:

Alan’s new book releases in December, about a young girl waking up in a hospital as Los Angeles is being abandoned.  She soon discovers:

   1)  that people are fleeing from so-called mutants

   2)  she’s queen of the mutants.

A few questions for the author!

1) What does your writing process look like?

I love conflict.  The first thing I do is make a list of all the conflict the main character will face.  For this book, I wrote out ‘Her memory loss, her illness, the terrorist named Walter, the President’s girlfriend, a lack of supplies, her ex-boyfriend, etc.’  I generated a list of about 15 conflicts the protagonist will face.

Then I generate the plot and chapters around those conflicts.

Individual chapters are plotted based around dialogue.  My stories have a LOT of dialogue (although Carmine has less than usual) 

I’m other words, I’m not a pantser.  My outline can evolve and change and morph, but there IS an outline. 

Ever read Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series?  FOURTEEN books long!  And he had notes for all of it, so that when he died Brandon Sanderson was able to pick it up and keep going.  I’m not that good, however.

2)  How do you come up with the ideas?

Have you read Thomas Harris’s Hannibal Lecter books?  Harris has an amazing quote about how he writes.  He says writing is not simply playing make-believe; you have to approach it as though you’re uncovering something that actually happened. 

I intended to write a story about a boy solving mysteries, but then he got sick and started climbing walls and throwing footballs out of stadiums.  I did not expect that.  Thus, the Outlaw series was born.  It just happened.

Carmine is book one in a series, and it’s a stand alone adventure.  You don’t need to read anything else to enjoy and understand the story, but there is a backstory to Carmine.  When I was on book two of the Outlaw series, I already had Carmine planned.  And I already have the next series planned too.  I don’t know where the ideas come from.

 

3)  How long have you been writing?

I was in detention my 9th grade year inside our school’s library.  I grew bored so I picked a book off the shelves - The Fellowship of the Ring.

My life changed.  I became a closet geek.  I’d come home from varsity soccer practice and write for an hour on our computer.  Never told a soul.

What was your secret career goal when you were in high school?  I’m living mine - a novelist.

By the way, my career began in a library and I still spend hours there every day.  Here’s a photo of me writing this very article from inside…a library.

4)  What tips do you have for aspiring writers?

Do you want to be a novelist?  Write a 60,000 word book within the next 6 months.

Do you want to write poetry?  Write a hundred poems.

Do you want to be a journalist?  Write an article a week.

And here’s the secret - that book won’t be good.  Mine wasn’t.  Those poems won’t be perfect.  The articles will suck.

But you’ll never ever ever grow as a writer until you write awful stuff and then tinker.  Fix it.

My first draft of Carmine SUCKED. My beta team couldn’t get through it. 

So I tinkered.  A lot.  I’m publishing the 5th draft.

You write stuff that sucks and then improve.

Audiobook Review: The One Real Thing (Hart's Boardwalk #1) by Samantha Young

Once again I am blown away by this author's characters and stories.  I've been so sad about the end of the On Dublin Street series, so having this new series start, and having it be this good really helped out.  I finished listening to this audiobook in New Orleans right before I got to meet the author for the first time.  She was the very first author I had to seek out and meet, having to make sure to show her my Nate Sawyer shirt that I'd made.  And of course I have to share that picture!

 If you haven't read any of Samantha Young's books before, you could totally start with this one.  We have two main characters, Jessica and Cooper.  And unlike the On Dublin Street series, we get this book told from both viewpoints.  It's not exactly every other chapter, but there are chapters from each of them.  Jessica is a doctor at a prison, and she finds some letters in a book, and after reading them, really feels a connection to the person who wrote them.  She looks up the prisoner's information, and finds out that she died in prison.  Now Jessica feels that she needs to take the letters to the town, Hartwell, and find the man they were meant for.  Maybe to give him some closure.  Once she gets there though, things aren't exactly as seemed.  

Cooper is a bar owner on the boardwalk, and a very eligible bachelor.  His and Jessica's first meeting definitely has some sexual tension, but Jessica isn't interested in that, and Cooper doesn't want to take no for an answer, so he vows to woo her.  But when Jessica shows him the letters, his mother knew the woman who wrote them, he blows them off.  It is the way he acts here that makes Jessica think she couldn't be with him, because she has something in her past that she figures he would not be able to forgive.  

Of course they both have secrets, and keeping them from each other will drive space between them.  Reading this story made me want to move to a small town and open a bookstore.  I also wished that as I was on my own vacation at the time, that maybe I'd meet my own Cooper.  Alas, it wasn't to be, for me.  In the end, it is a romance, things will work out.  And then we will be left wondering about the other characters and who will get the next story or a future story.  I'm so ready to read book two, the author is giving away ARCs on Facebook right now.  I hope I win!

My rating:  4 stars

When the author got in touch with me and asked if I'd like to read this sequel to The Heir and the Spare, a book that I loved, I was so excited I immediately said yes.   While it did take me a chapter or two to get back into the story and remember exactly what happened in the other book, once I did, I was hooked again.  

The story is told from the viewpoint of Maggie.  Since we didn't really have her in the first book, that is probably what took me a bit to get into it, new character.  Maggie is in Scotland with her family, while her father, a famous Hollywood director, is filming a movie there.  Her mother is also a part of the movie, as always helping their father out.  Sounds like a wonderful time, right?  Well Maggie's family life isn't great.  Her father is a horrible, abusive man.  So much that Maggie is unsure to tell him how she has applied to a fashion design school in England, instead of going back to UCLA to be an entertainment lawyer like her dad wants her to.  

While spending time away from the house, to get away from her dad, she runs into a very cute guy named Preston.  We know Preston from the first book.  She definitely is interested in Preston, and he is obviously interested in her.  But she doesn't tell him at first who her father is.  In the past, boys have used her to get to her father for their own purposes, and then left her in the dust.  But when her father decides that she needs to date the current star of his movie to help promote the movie, and he basically blackmails her to do it, in exchange for "letting" her go to Thrippletons School of Fashion and Design.  When she tells Preston about the deal, he says he will be able to deal with it.  But soon, after the pictures of Maggie and the movie star, Ben, are all over the papers, of them kissing and dating, he decides he can't really take it and makes a break.

All the while her fashion dreams are coming true when her design is chosen for the prince's girlfriend's dress to a formal charity event.  This is when our characters from the last book start to join in.  Evie is who the dress is for, and Prince Edmund, Preston's roommate from before, is her boyfriend.

There is a lot of emotion in the story, and Maggie's dad, wow, he's just a total jerk, and it's nice when you see him get what he deserves.  The romance is sweet, and I love Preston and Maggie together.  I love all of Maggie's friends at the school as well.

I was left hoping for maybe more books, either with Preston and Evie and Edmund's friends, or maybe some of Maggie's friends, or even her brother.  I loved how Maggie went ghost hunting with Preston's sister.  Such a neat part of the story.  Definitely this is a highly recommended book for me!

Guest Post: Yellow Hair by Andrew Joyce

My name is Andrew Joyce and I write books for a living. I would like to thank Lisa for allowing me to be here today to promote my latest, Yellow Hair, which documents the injustices done to the Sioux Nation from their first treaty with the United States in 1805 through Wounded Knee in 1890. Every death, murder, battle, and outrage I write about actually took place. The historical figures that play a role in my fact-based tale of fiction were real people and I use their real names. Yellow Hair is an epic tale of adventure, family, love, and hate that spans most of the 19^th century.

Now that the commercial is out of the way, we can get down to what I really came here to talk about: the Sioux people. The people we know as the Sioux were originally known as the Dakota, which means ally. The name Sioux came from the Chippewa and the French. The Chippewa called them Nadonessiou, which means adder, or enemy, and then the French shortened the name to Sioux.

Every culture has an origin myth. We in the West have Adam and Eve. The Ancient Greeks had Gaia. According to the Norse people, Odin and Ymir founded the earth. If you will allow me, I’d like to tell you the creation story of the Dakota.

In the beginning, before the creation of the earth, the gods resided in the sky and humans lived in darkness. Chief among the gods was Ta՜kuwakaŋ, the Sun, who was married to Haŋyetuwi, the Moon. He had one daughter, Wohpe. And there was Old Man and Old Woman, whose daughter, Ite, was wife to Wind, to whom she gave four sons, the Four Winds.

Of the other spirits, the most important was Iŋktomi, the devious trickster. Iŋktomi conspired with Old Man and Old Woman to increase their daughter's status by arranging an affair between the Sun and Ite. His wife’s discovery of the affair led Ta՜kuwakaŋ to give the Moon her own domain, and by separating her from himself, created time.

Old Man, Old Woman and Ite—who was separated from Wind, her husband—were banished to Earth. Ite, along with her children, the Four Winds, and a fifth wind—the child of Ite but not of Wind—established space. The daughter of the Sun and the Moon, Wohpe, also fell to earth and later resided with the South Wind. The two adopted the fifth wind, who was called Wamŋiomŋi.

Alone on the newly formed Earth, some of the gods became bored. Ite prevailed upon Iŋktomi to find her people, the Buffalo Nation. In the form of a wolf, Iŋktomi went beneath the earth and discovered a village of humans. Iŋktomi told them about the wonders of the Earth and convinced one man, Tokahe, to accompany him through a cave to the surface. Tokahe did so and, upon reaching the surface, saw the green grass and blue sky for the first time. Iŋktomi and Ite introduced Tokahe to buffalo meat and showed him tipis, clothing, hunting clubs, and bows and arrows. Tokahe returned to the underworld village and appealed to six other men and their families to go with him to the Earth's surface.

When they arrived, they discovered that Iŋktomi had deceived Tokahe. The buffalo were scarce; the weather had turned bad, and they found themselves starving. Unable to return to their home, but armed with a new knowledge about the world, they survived to become the founders of the Seven Council Fires.

The Seven Council Fires . . . or Oćeti Šakowiŋ . . .  are the Mdewakanton, the Wahpeton, the Wahpekute, the Sisseton, the Yankton, the Yanktonai, and the Lakota.

After Tokahe led the six families to the surface of the earth, they wandered for many winters. Sons were born and sons died. Winters passed, more winters than could be counted. That was before Oćeti Šakowiŋ. But not until White Buffalo Calf Woman did the humans become Dakota.

Two scouts were hunting the buffalo when they came to the top of a small hill. A long way off, they observed the figure of a woman. As she approached, they saw that she was beautiful. She was young and carried a wakiŋ. One of the scouts had lustful thoughts and told the other. His friend told him that she was sacred and to banish such thoughts.

The woman came up to them and said to the one with the lustful thoughts, “If you would do what you are thinking, come forward.” The scout moved and stood before her and a white cloud covered them from sight.

When the woman stepped from the cloud, it blew away. There on the ground, at the beautiful woman’s feet, lay a pile of bones with worms crawling in and among them.

The woman told the other scout to go to his village and tell his people that she was coming, for them to build a medicine tipi large enough to hold all the chiefs of the nation. She said, “I bring a great gift to your people.”

When the people heard the scout’s story, they constructed the lodge, and put on their finest clothing, then stood about the lodge and waited.

As the woman entered the village, she sang:

‘With visible breath I am walking.

A voice I am sending as I walk.

In a sacred manner I am walking.

With visible tracks I am walking.

In a sacred manner I walk.’

She handed the wakiŋ to the head chief and he withdrew a pipe from the bundle. On one side of the pipe was carved a bison calf. “The bison represents the earth, which will house and feed you,” she said.

Thirteen eagle feathers hung from the wooden stem. White Buffalo Calf Woman told the chiefs, “The feathers represent the sky and the thirteen moons. With this pipe, you shall prosper. With this pipe, you shall speak with Wakaŋ Taŋ՜ka (God). With this pipe, you shall become The People. With this pipe, you shall be bound with the Earth for She is your mother. She is sacred. With this pipe, you shall be bound to your relatives.”

Having given the pipe to the People, and having said what she had to say, she turned and walked four paces from the lodge and sat down.

When she arose, she was a red-and-brown buffalo calf. She walked on, lay down and came up as a black buffalo calf. Walking still farther, she turned into a white buffalo and stood upon a hill. She turned to bow in the four directions of the four winds and then she vanished.

Because of White Buffalo Calf Woman, the Dakota honor our mother the Earth; they honor their parents and their grandparents. They honor the birds of the sky; they honor the beasts of the earth. They know that Wakaŋ Taŋ՜ka resides in all animals, in all trees and plants and rocks and stones. Wakaŋ Taŋ՜ka is in all. They know that Wakaŋ Taŋ՜ka lives in each of us.

Because of White Buffalo Calf Woman, they have become Dakota.

Okay, so I’ve only slept with one guy since Ethan and I broke up. Denny and I dated for a few months. He was crazy about me—he wanted to move in together—but I never felt the same. After we broke up, he nearly evaporated from my mind. It still goes back to Ethan every time I pull out my rabbit-style vibrator (he did buy it for me). Or every time I touch myself sans mechanical assistance.
I clear my throat and smile my most confident smile. “Don’t get upset if you see me with someone else.”
“You’re sleeping around?”
“That’s not a crime, is it?” I chew on my lower lip. It’s not the case either, but he doesn’t need to know that.
“No. Of course not. I’m glad. Anybody I know?”
“No.”
“You coming often, at least?”
“Excuse me?”
“We’re gonna be around each other. We should be friendly.”
“Pretty sure you coming often goes past most people’s idea of friendly.”
“Of course, Vi. Would never want to make you uncomfortable.” He smiles, the look in his eyes screaming I guess that’s a no.
I clear my throat. “Yeah, I’m coming a lot. Every night.” By my hand, but that’s a technicality. “Sometimes multiple times.”
His expression flares with frustration. “Great.”
“And you? Enjoy screwing strangers at bars?”
“Depends on the stranger.”
I laugh-scoff. “I guess it would.”

Review: Bigger and Badder by Jackson Kane

I just recently found this author, but I found him first as a cover model.  I'd been following him on Facebook for awhile, and when the opportunity came up to read his book, I definitely volunteered.  And I have to say I was not disappointed in the least!  As far as I know, I've only read romances by women authors before.  There were a few things that kind of stood out as a man having written this, but not in any way that made the story bad. 

There are two main characters that we get the story from, Judy and Garrett.  The start of the story we see the "meet-cute" between the two.  It's at a masquerade ball and while the two have a really nice dance and time, Garrett soon leaves, and goes on with his life.  The two of them didn't really know who the other was at the time.  But when Judy's town is trying to save itself by building a stadium, they call Garrett in to try to finance their plan to save the town.  Garrett is sure from the very start that there is no way he can help this town.  It isn't until Judy shows up, and he sees something about her, that he decides he will give her the chance to convince him, especially when she immediately pegs him as a conceited jerk.  Garrett's life is already pretty full, with many reasons for him to be pretty conceited.  He's been a champion football player, he's a billionaire, and all of this before the age of 30.  He does have a young daughter though, and she comes first. 

The three days that Judy has to convince him seem to go pretty well, until at the end the town refuses to accept the terms he puts out in order for him to help.  And when that happens, someone else swoops in to "help" the town. But really, they don't plan to help, they plan to let the town sink, and he intends to make it so that it seems it is all Garrett's fault in the end. 

Garrett will have to decide just how much Judy means to him, and if he is able to save the town and still reach his goals before the age of 30.  Judy will have to figure out how to deal with what is in Garrett's life, and what his being back has changed in her life. 

This second chance romance was a good one.  There were definitely some very hot and sexy scenes.  I really enjoyed this book, and look forward to reading more.
