“I’m going to get a drink.” I grabbed my purse and was moving to slide out of the booth when Killian got up first.
“I’ll get it. What would you like?”
“Uh …” I looked past him to the bar, hoping to see a list of beers. “What do they have? What are you drinking?”
“King Tut’s Lager. It’s brewed in Glasgow.”
Ooh. “Well, I have to have that, then. Half a pint though.” I made a gesture with my finger and thumb. “I’m only little.”
Killian’s eyes flickered down what he could see of my body and I thought I saw a flush high on his cheeks. But the lighting was low so I couldn’t be certain. He cleared his throat and turned away with a muttered, “Right.”
My cheeks felt hot and I put a hand to one as I watched him walk over to the bar. The place wasn’t too packed, but it was possible everyone was already in the venue waiting for the band. I could hear the soft thrum of music and guessed it must’ve been the opening act. Although eager to get up there, I really needed a drink before I had to stand next to Killian in a darkened room.
God, he had an ass on him.
He wasn’t wearing his usual uniform of black suit trousers and shirt that fit him like a glove and showcased his lean, strong physique. He was wearing dark jeans that cupped his muscular ass and a red plaid shirt over a Kaleo T-shirt. He looked good in red. He usually wore darker colors but the red made his hair look blacker, his skin more golden. Dressed like that—indie, relaxed—he looked younger.
I felt more than a tingle of heat between my legs as I studied him standing at the bar. His rugged, sharp profile was somehow more familiar to me than any other person’s profile on the planet. I imagined walking up beside him, sliding my hands down his fine ass and reaching up on my tiptoes to press a kiss to his neck. Breathe in the scent of soap, spicy aftershave, and Killian. Run my tongue along the rim of his ear. Feel his heavy, warm heat lean back into me, the rumble of his groan vibrating through me—
Oh, fuck.
I shook off the thought, knowing my cheeks were probably rosy red. My whole body was left needy and wanting. I crossed my legs under the table and looked anywhere but at Killian, hoping my peaked nipples weren’t visible through my bra and way-too clingy dress.
My gaze landed on a booth a few down from ours because there was a group of young women laughing and shooting hungry looks at the bar.
At Killian.
A roar of possessiveness I didn’t know I was capable of shot through me as I watched them. In fact, I think they were eyeing him and the bartender.
To be fair, they were both very juicy eye candy.
But Killian was my eye candy!
Shit.
I slumped back in my seat.
No, he wasn’t.
And I shouldn’t want him to be.
What a clusterfuck.

I really do love a good older woman/younger man story, probably because I am attracted to younger men.  Usually not this much younger, but I really liked the way this story was done.  Ash knew what he wanted,  the 32 year old single mother who moved in next door.  Ash was only 17, and knew that he needed to wait until he was 18.  Ash had a not so great past, and so was now doing his best to be a good person.  Not only that, he really started to like Kristy more than just wanting to hook up with her, the more he made her wait until he was 18.  Now, he kept his true age from her, and made her think he just wanted to get to know her better first.  When she found out how old he really was, well, Kristy knew that it wasn't okay.  As a single mom, her daughter came first.  Ash understood that as the child of divorced parents.  He'd wished his mom had done the same for him.  

I really loved how the whole thing played out.  I felt like Kristy was very realistic in how she behaved and reacted.  I mean, she could have lost her daughter, her job, etc., for messing around with a 17 year old boy.  And even once he was 18, it was still better to not flaunt it.  Another thing I liked is that Ash was really chasing her.  In fact, the last line of the synopsis is one that really rings with me.  I like younger guys, but don't feel like a cougar, because I am not a forward person, one who would go out and chase a guy.  So this is definitely my kind of romance.  It had steamy parts, when he was 18, and also some very emotional parts, when things looked like they couldn't go on. Oh yeah, and all the puns that Kristy came up with Ash's name, like the title of the book, loved those!

Glad to find a new author that I'll be checking out more books from in the future!

My Review:
I really enjoyed the first book, and you can read my review of it HERE, if you don't want to be spoiled for the story.   This one doesn't get quite as wild and dirty as the first one, but that is because it is kind of an in-between story.  It's kind of the wrap-up for the whole RFC as proposed and carried out in book 1.  What I really liked about it was that we got to see a lot of the love between Winter and Lucky.  The settled relationship. But that doesn't mean there isn't any conflict.  No sirree.  Willow and Lucky have to deal with how the producers of the show don't like how she kind of slid under the whole sex with different guys once she decided she was going to be with Lucky because she loved him.  So she has to agree to re-film a few scenes.  And then of course there is Lucky's sister and his bandmate Rocky's interactions.  You can't help but root for them so much!  And now I'm just ready to read the next book, so that I can find out how season 2 will go for Raven's best friend Marsha.  

Definitely a great addition to the series, a good catch up to get ready for the next one.  I'll be reading it soon!

Author Interview:

1.  What does your writing process look like? Do you know the whole story when you start?  Or do you just start writing and go with it (seat of the pants writing)?  If you plan it out, how do you do that?  Outline, notecards, post-it-notes, etc.? 



By nature, I am a total seat-of-the-pants writer. Before I start typing, the story is black and white and grainy. I see the beginning and end, some major plot points, and lots of blank white pages. I do try! But it’s a trickle of slow thoughts.



Then I start typing and the story bursts into full color. The creative juices flow.



For instance—dialogue. When I start writing a scene, I know the overall goal (Valentine learns her mother might have been innocent), but I have no idea what the characters are going to do or say. As I’m writing, the characters just start talking. I hear them. I see them. Ideas pop into my head faster than I can type. Those ideas don’t come when I’m staring at an outline. They come as I’m actually writing the scene.



However . . . that’s a slow way of writing. I definitely think outlining is fabulous and force myself through it. I’ve read many books on it. I know how. I try.



Here are some things that have worked for me—and not worked.



Everyone loves post-it notes except me. When I move one sticky note, several others have to be moved, and it’s a constant picking up and re-sticking. For me, post-it notes are too permanent for my ever-shifting ideas.



I like index cards on the rug because they’re easy to slide around and rearrange. And—bonus!—you don’t have to vacuum for a while. I bought cute magnetic clips so I could put the index cards on a magnetic bulletin board, but I ended up preferring the rug. Just easier to move things around.



I love handwriting a random stream of plot ideas in a notebook. It wakes up a different part of your brain. I never read it again, it’s just my brain thinking through the story without worrying about pretty sentences.



I could talk about this forever, but I’ll move on!





2. Are you part of a writers group that gets together and helps each other with their writing?



Yes! Not only is it super helpful (even necessary), it’s FUN! Writing is solitary and stressful. It’s wonderful to have friends who get it—both emotionally and at a writing level to point out what’s both good and bad about your chapter.



I had an online group for a while that never met in person (living across the globe, literally) but was still very rewarding and helpful.



Now, I have a local group of six writers that meets once a week, rotating homes. We have a great time and have become very close. We each bring a chapter, via email, and all sit together with our laptops. Someone else reads your chapter aloud and everyone interrupts along the way with comments like: “I can’t picture where they are. So much awesome chemistry in this scene! You used that word three times.” It’s a weekly deadline to have a polished chapter to share. Our group has had five books published this year!



How did we meet, you ask. Two of us were in a book club together. She met someone . . . who knew someone else . . . who knew someone else.



3.  How do you come up with your ideas for your stories?



I always have lots of ideas. The problem is choosing the best one to write. Right now, I’m trying to finish one manuscript while the next story is crowding into my head before its time!



I’m very visual (grew up in a family of artists), so it usually starts with a picture in my mind. For instance, GIRL AT THE GRAVE started as an image of a little girl in the 1800s with wild curls and dirty feet staring through a schoolhouse window. Then I wonder—what put that person in that situation and what happens next?



I love writing first chapters because it’s that initial image in my head that captivated my interest. The ending is also usually clear. It’s the middle that can feel muddy until it’s written.



4.  How important are names in your books?  Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds, or the meaning?  Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?



I looove choosing names. They have to sound right, obviously, and work for your character’s personality and culture. But equally important, I think, is how the name looks on the page. Our eyes skim as we read—we SEE the word. I don’t want lots of short names that all look the same or start with the same letter. Usually, once I hit the right name it just feels right.



I recently changed a character’s name and my critique group screamed in protest. So back to the original name I went!


I love the website Behind the Name, and for last names Behind the Surname. I get frustrated by all the ads on the Nameberry website but still use it. I have a few name books on my shelf. My favorite book divides them by nationality, which I think is important. These days, people name their baby any old thing, but if you’re writing anything historical, ethnicity and religion played a big role in names.

Author Interview:

I had a chance to interview Christina Bauer, author of numerous YA fantasy series featuring kick-ass chicks…

1.  Do you always know how the story will end when you start?
I only write books in a series. So to make sure I can get past book one, I always map out the storyline to at least book five before I begin. Even so, sometimes things change once I get into things. Lately, I’ve been having surprise characters show up who then change the story. ***SPOILER ALERT*** For example, in my newest release, CRADLED, some characters from my Angelbound series got into the mix.
Early on in my writing, I used to freak out when I diverged from my original outline. Now, I roll with it. It’s almost always a sign that the book is gaining a real inner life of its own.
2.  Where is your ideal place to write?  Do you have an office, or do you like to go sit in a coffee shop/library, etc.?
I like to write in Starbucks and on a particular spot on my couch with lots of pillows around me. My publishing company, Monster House Books, recently moved to new digs, so I’m writing there a lot lately too.  
3. Do you edit as you go, or wait till you're finished before you edit?  How many times would you say you go over it yourself before having another set of eyes look it over? 
At Monster House, we have a formalized writing process that’s really collaborative. It starts with a written outline and Pinterest boards, then we dive into the writing process. I’m super fortunate in that we have an amazing Editor in Chief, GIE, who gives feedback as I write or she can wait for a full manuscript. Again, Monster House has a team of writers and editors who help each other in a formalized way through every step of the writing process. I think it makes for fewer missed deadlines as well as higher quality books.
