Review and Promo Post (Giveaway): Nexis (Tricksters #1) by A.L. Davroe

About the Book:
Nexis (Tricksters, #1) by A.L. Davroe
Release Date: Dec. 1, 2015
Genre: YA Sci-Fi / YA Science Fiction
Published by: Entangled Teen

In the domed city of Evanescence, appearance is everything. A Natural Born amongst genetically-altered Aristocrats, all Ella ever wanted was to be like everyone else. Augmented, sparkling, and perfect. Then…the crash. Devastated by her father’s death and struggling with her new physical limitations, Ella is terrified to learn she is not just alone, but little more than a prisoner.

Her only escape is to lose herself in Nexis, the hugely popular virtual reality game her father created. In Nexis she meets Guster, a senior player who guides Ella through the strange and compelling new world she now inhabits. He offers Ella guidance, friendship…and something more. Something that allows her to forget about the “real” world, and makes her feel whole again.

But Nexis isn’t quite the game everyone thinks it is.

My Review:
So at first I just signed up for a promo post of this book because I didn't know for sure whether I'd have time to read it before the date came up with all the other e-galleys I had to review. I did go ahead and request it from Netgalley, so thanks to them and Entangled Teen for allowing me to read this e-galley.  But as I've been starting to slow down my request on e-galleys, and choosing to not read those that I am not as hugely excited about, I was able to get to this. And just in the nick of time I finished it on Sunday, so that I could add my review to the promo post.  This book was one that once I picked it up, I didn't want to put it down.  I loved this story!

As you read above, the main character is Ellani, or Ella/Elle as she goes by most often.  She lives in a dystopian world where the rich are able to plan their children to be the way they want them with all kinds of genetic enhancements, to make them perfect.  Ella is the daughter of one of the Aristocrats who was born this way, and her mother who was mostly a Natural, unchanged.  Her mother didn't like all the changes and so never let Ella get any of the modifications like the other kids she went to school with, even after her mother is dead, her father keeps the promise of no modifications.  When we begin the story, Ella's father has just been given very important status with a virtual reality game he has invented called Nexis.  This is supposed to be THE best game, ever.  Ella tries to make up for the no modifications thing, she is embarrassed to be a natural, and so creates a visor with a hologram that makes her look like the other Aristocrats.  At this big event to celebrate her father, she tries to impress the president's son, Quentin, who she's had a crush on forever.  But when something happens that embarrasses her in front of all the kids her age, she leaves the party with her father, and is very angry at him.  In the pod, which is a form of transportation in this world, there is an accident. When she wakes up, her father is dead, and she has lost her legs.  She feels sorry for herself, and finds herself living in her father's workroom being taken care of by some woman she doesn't even know.  Her nanny-android that she grew up with, Meems, tries to bring her out of her depression and convinces her that to play her father's VR game, she will be able to feel closer to him.

So Ella goes into the game and at first isn't quite sure what is going on. But then she meets a boy, he's handsome and funny, and seems to want to help her.  She seems to be drawn to him, and he to her.  In fact he thinks she is one of the people that the Oracle told him he would need on his quest.  His name is Guster, and he is a trickster in the game.  His quest is to get to the command center of the game, and has a whole group already with him to help.  Now people can only be in the game for a certain amount of real time, and so in the times when Ella must be in the real world, she does a lot of studying historical books and records that her father, who loved that kind of stuff, had left in his workroom.  She has to deal with a caretaker who seems to be only taking care of her for her money.  And she learns something about the accident and what people believe really happened that will rock her world, and send her back into the game, and back into Guster's arms.

As you would expect, the goal of the game was something her father, and mother in a way. left for her to solve, to help bring change to their world.  But to get to the end of the quest successfully she will have to trust these friends in the game that she has no idea who they might be in the real world.  And some will be lost along the way as well.  And when she gets to the end, things on the outside will really change.  And she will have to decide if she does want to get to know Guster, the boy she's fallen in love with, outside in the real world.

There's so much more to the story.  And all the twists and turns and how all the little things connected, wow, I was just drawn in and had to keep reading as much as possible.  I love that Guster could be the perfect guy, and really, you can't fault the story for it, they're in a video game, who wouldn't make things exactly the way they want to be in a game, where you never have to go and actually see the person, it can be just how you want it.  But Guster, wow, I hadn't really guessed who he would be until right when she got out of the world at the end.  And then, it was a great twist, and I really liked it. But even that has a twist at the end. One that I am so hanging on and waiting until the next book comes out so that I can know what is really going on with that.   I highly recommend this book.  It will be one of my upcoming staff recs at the bookstore where I work as well!  I've been friends with the author through social media for a while, and am so glad to be able to promote her book!!

Debut Author Bash and Giveaway: Holly Bodger

I am very excited to get to host author Holly Bodger on my blog today.  I was so excited to see that she would be one of the authors we would get to choose, and then to find out I got to host her on my blog was even more exciting.

Author Bio:
A long-time resident of Ottawa, Canada, I have been working in publishing since I graduated with an English degree from the University of Ottawa.

I am represented by Lauren MacLeod of The Strothman Agency, LLC. My debut novel, 5 TO 1, was released on May 12, 2015 from Knopf Books for Young Readers (Penguin Random House).

I am also the author of TEN which was a finalist for the 2013 RWA Golden Heart (YA Category).

Book Info:
In the year 2054, after decades of gender selection, India now has a ratio of five boys for every girl, making women an incredibly valuable commodity. Tired of marrying off their daughters to the highest bidder and determined to finally make marriage fair, the women who form the country of Koyanagar have instituted a series of tests so that every boy has the chance to win a wife.

Sudasa doesn’t want to be a wife, and Contestant Five, a boy forced to compete in the test to become her husband, has other plans as well. Sudasa’s family wants nothing more than for their daughter to do the right thing and pick a husband who will keep her comfortable—and caged. Five’s family wants him to escape by failing the tests. As the tests advance, Sudasa and Five thwart each other at every turn until they slowly realize that they just might want the same thing.

This beautiful, unique novel is told from alternating points of view—Sudasa’s in verse and Contestant Five’s in prose—allowing readers to experience both characters’ pain and their brave struggle for hope.

Author's Top Ten Favorite Books:

It’s always hard to list my favorite books, especially when I’m only allowed ten so I’ve decided to focus on those that have inspired me as a writer.

Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt

I’ve read this book, listened to the audiobook (narrated by the late Frank McCourt himself) and seen the movie and I could do so over and over again. It’s a wonderful story that mixes despair and humor in the perfect way. It’s also an excellent example of how to write a memoir.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

I like happy-sad books and this is another fabulous example of one. It’s a tiny ray of sunshine in the middle of a horrific setting. The POV is original and well-done (and yes, I watched the movie and loved it too!)

Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding

It may not come as a surprise to hear that I’ve read this, listened to it and watched the movie like ten or twenty times (I do tend to overdose on things I love!) This story is one of my go-to feel-goods. It’s hilarious and romantic and a fine example of how to write in diary format.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Like the other books on this list, I have read this many times and have seen many of the movies (the one with Helena Bonham Carter is my favorite). This is an amazing book with so many levels to it that I still continue to discover more every time I read it. It is a fantastic example of how to write a complex and sympathetic antagonist.

Gallagher Girls Series by Ally Carter

As per my earlier comment about overdosing on things I love, I’m refusing to pick just one of the books in this series because I love them all. I also love the audiobooks and promise to love the movies if they ever make them. These books feature smart, kickass heroines with awesome friendships and familial relationships. The pace is absolutely perfect and the setting is very well done.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Annie Barrows & Mary Ann Shaffer

This is obviously a recurring theme here, but I have read this and listened to it many times and I always love it just as much as the previous time. This novel is a great example of using multiple POVs to tell a story and handles the letter format very well. It’s also both sad and funny and a little bit romantic.

Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling

And now for the part where I sound a really obsessive. I have read all of these books. I have listened to all of the audiobooks. I have seen all of the movies many many times. I have been to the Harry Potter theme parks in Florida (also many times). I own my own wand, sorting hat, golden snitch, rats, troll (fake of course)… I adore not just these books but this entire world. When I talk about how to create a fabulous setting, these are the books I use as examples. They are unmatched in that area.

Identical by Ellen Hopkins

I adore everything written by Ellen Hopkins, but this one had a twist that blew me away. I actually re-read it immediately afterwards (and then listened to the audiobook) because I was truly awestruck.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

This has always been one of my favorite books of all time. I have read it, listened to it and watched the movies (and let me just say that Colin Firth is the only Darcy I will acknowledge). It’s a wonderful story of love and family strife, and is a great example of how to write quiet, yet powerful romantic conflict.

Wonder by RJ Palacio

This is an absolutely lovely story that made me smile and cry and smilecry. It is told in multiple POVs (I see a theme running here) all of which are done very well. It also features a diverse character without making diversity an issue.

Sugar Skulls

Publication date: November 10th 2015
Genres: Dystopia, New Adult, Science Fiction
Welcome to Cyrene, a city where energy is currency and music is the lifeblood of its young citizens. Everyone lives on the grid, and the residents of the world’s largest playground are encouraged to pursue every physical and emotional pleasure imaginable.
Vee is the lead singer of the Sugar Skulls, an all-girl band that is Corporate’s newest pet project. Micah haunts the city like a ghost after an overdose of a deadly illegal street drug knocks him off the grid. When Micah and Vee forge an immediate, undeniable connection, their troubled worlds collide.
Trading concert stages for Cyrene’s rooftops and back alleys, they have to evade vicious thugs and Vee’s possessive manager as they unravel the mysteries connected to their dark pasts. And before the curtain falls, Micah and Vee will bring the city to its knees in their desperate bid for love, home, and a future together.

EXCERPT:
V
The girl in the mirror is an undead supermodel in search of a catwalk. It’s the handiwork of the new styling team Corporate brought in to deal with my hair and paint my face and glue sequins to my eyelids and shove in the black-light contacts after the old team quit.
Not that I’m admitting I had anything to do with them unceremoniously packing their kits and leaving before the last show. Better to point the finger at Jax.
In the group, Jax is “the crazy one.” Damon recruited her a year ago, just before her eighteenth birthday, and she’s driven every styling team we’ve had batshit insane with her demands.
“Spiderwebs,” she decides for her face paint tonight, then points her index fingers at a case of skunk-striped bedhead so legendary, it looks like mice have nested in it. “Just don’t touch the ’do.”
There’s a continuous rumble coming from the front of the house: newbies, fresh off the nanotech install and frothing at the mouth to get a taste of everything Cyrene has to offer. The mistress of ceremonies appears a few minutes later, hovering around the edges of my mirror like a moth about to get bug-zapped, makeup already settling into creases she thinks no one else can see. Hellcat Maggie drones on for a bit, her words painted in every shade of predictable monotony.
Eyes glued to the set list on her laptop, short hair spiked and pink, Sasha nods and makes understanding noises without really listening. Five months back, Damon pulled her from outside Cyrene, where everything is workaday business as usual, melting polar ice caps and recycling and talking heads, minimum-wage jobs and Wall Street assholes. She told me he offered a considerable chunk of cash to her poor-as-dirt family in exchange for a three-year contract capitalizing on her sound design and computer skills. Means Sasha got to leapfrog over a hundred thousand or more eager applicants all clamoring to get into the city, but instead of acting like a badass, she’s more like a puppy that might pee on the rug.
She and Jax are the same age, but you’d never guess it, because Sasha is “the nice one.”
And me? Well, I guess that makes me “the bitch.” Like now, instead of joining in Jax’s preshow pill binge or Sasha’s obsessive run-throughs of the set list, I hug Little Dead Thing and wish everyone would just shut their cakeholes. He understands my mood, curling up in a tight fur-splotched ball in my lap, purring like a rusted-out lawn mower engine. Sasha dragged this sorry excuse for a cat in off the street a couple months back. He’d almost immediately started trailing after me, gratitude be damned, yowling at doors closed between us and shredding furniture when left behind at the Loft. Just easier to bring him along, a freaky little mascot who leaves hairs all over my robe.
But I banish him to a dark corner before getting dressed. Fuck-me wardrobe. Heels so tall, I prance instead of walking through the dim red lights in the wings. Corseted waist, narrow skirt, a thousand pounds of hand-sewn beads catching the light when I step onstage. The dress was a class-me-up gift from Damon: vintage and gorgeous and beyond expensive.
I’d taken a switchblade to it, because tatters suit me better.
Still miles away from comfortable, I try to draw a deeper breath than the corset allows, and it catches in my throat. I shouldn’t be stressing. Tonight’s just a warm-up for the big to-do at the Dome. Three days and counting. Have to test the set list and the newest energy-grabbing thrum-collectors Corporate’s eager to roll out citywide.
Every time I blow up one of the old ones, it knocks me off the grid. Cue a mind-scrubbing and a nanotech reboot. I’m tired of waking up as a brand-new Vee. I’d like to keep this version of myself, even if that means making nicey-nice with the equipment.
Anything to keep Damon off my back for a little while longer.

Review: The Heir (The Selection #4) by Kiera Cass

When this book came out last May, I had to buy it right away.  But then, I didn't get to it until now.  I'm, of course, kind of mad with myself for that.  However as soon as I picked it up, I was sucked back into the world and had trouble putting it down to go to sleep each night.  I'd be like, okay I'll read to this chapter then go to bed. Then I'd find myself noticing I'd gone past that, and say I would stop at the end of the chapter I was in.  I've finished, and am now extremely eager for the next book to come out.  If you haven't read the original series, or finished it yet, I can't promise that there might not be some spoilers, so you might want to stop reading now.

This story takes place with Maxon and America's daughter, Eadlyn.  Because she was the first born, she will be the first female that will rule the country, probably ever.  All of this has partly come about from all of the changes that her parents have made.  Like getting rid of the castes, and trying to make things more equal for everyone.  Only things aren't going quite as smoothly as they could be.  There are people not happy with how things have changed.  And not just the ones who had been in the higher castes.  Eadlyn has known her whole life that she will rule, and has gone to work with her father every day as soon as she could to learn the ropes.  But with all the bad things happening, her parents decide that maybe it would be a bit of a distraction to hold a Selection for Eadlyn.  Something that supposedly they hadn't been going to do anymore.  Eadlyn is not happy about it.  She doesn't feel like she's ready for a husband.  And so at first she fights it, only agreeing to participate for 3 months to help with the distraction.  Eadlyn comes up with all kinds of plans on how to scare the boys away so that she won't have to vote any of them out herself.  When the selection occurs, the boys are picked randomly, much different than how they had been done.  And one of the suitors is a boy that she's grown up with in the palace, named Kile, a boy she's always kind of argued and competed with.  His younger sister is also a thorn in Eadlyn's side.  She has taken her crowns and broken or lost them.  Something she's not supposed to do at all.

As you can expect, the dates and spending time with all the boys doesn't go perfectly.  Some are good dates, but then Eadlyn doesn't know if she wants them to be. She's never been one to open up to anyone really, and when one of the boys gets close, she leaves him abruptly and he is confused, and unhappy.  There are more things like this.  When she decides to do her first elimination, she ends up doing it in such a way that it doesn't turn out well.  When she goes out in a parade at the beginning of the Selection, the reaction from her people isn't what she expected.  Through all the boys and all the things going on, she learns a lot about herself, and how people see her.  The Selection isn't over in this one book, so we have at least one more to go.  I wish it was two more, but I think maybe there's just one?

I loved being back with the characters.  I loved the friends who American and Maxon kept around, as family basically in the palace.  I enjoyed the family interactions for the most part.  But, like the suitors, I didn't quite "like" Eadlyn as much as I'd liked America.  She had been spoiled, although she didn't necessarily act as much like a brat as Kile's little sister did.  But she was so set on how she would lead, and feeling like that made her more important in that way, it was harder to like her.  I did feel for Eadlyn though.  Enough that I definitely could understand her feelings and sympathize with her when some of the boys turned out to be not so great guys, either violent, or a little too hands on.  And as I said, I'm ready to read on and see if what she's learned in this first book will help her to actually pick a good guy and make the Selection what it is supposed to be. And the big thing that happened at the end of the book, well I am ready to know how that turns out as well.  I'd call this another great addition to The Selection series.

In a modern world ruled by territorial Greek gods, the human race has been oppressed, exploited and now, nearly destroyed by the constant infighting of gods.

Author Interview:
1.  What does your writing process look like?  Do you know the whole story when you start?  Or do you just start writing and go with it (seat of the pants writing)?  If you plan it out, how do you do that?  Outline, note cards, post-it notes, etc.?
I always explain it like this. I have three to five televisions playing in my head at any one time. Each one has a story that’s being worked out by the Muses. When I’m ready to write, I sit down and pull up the television I want to work on and just start writing. The stories are unplanned in the sense of an outline and yet, they’re constantly being updated mentally. I call it intuitive writing - I don’t consciously know where the story is going, but my subconscious does, and I trust it to guide me!

2.  How do you come up with your ideas for your stories?
I don’t really know. I’ve been told I channel them. They basically just come to me - dozens of them. I don’t have time to capture or write or even jot down all of them!

3.  How long have you been writing?
Since I was about nine! I finished my first novel when I was twelve, and I think it’s buried somewhere in my mother’s basement. I started self publishing in January 2011.

4.  What tips do you have for aspiring writers?
Write no matter how you feel, persevere when you face obstacles, and surround yourself with positive people who support your dreams and believe in you.

5. How important are names in your books?  Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds, or the meaning?  Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
I do both, depending on the book and series. Some names I make up, because they sound pretty or exotic, and some names I research. For example, all the names in Omega, I researched. Each has a special meaning or came from a certain era of Greek history that’s reflected in their personality. I don’t really have resources - you really can find anything by just Googling and digging around!

Some fun questions:

Favorites
Book: “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen
Author: Jane Austen
Genre: I read non-fiction! I don’t read fiction, except on very rare occasional I’ll read epic fantasy.
Movies: anything with action, beefcakes and explosions
TV shows: Love Doctor Who! Any series that’s sci-fi, dystopian or fantasy based!
Music: Various. I love classical and can listen to just about anything but country.
Food/writing snack:  I’m a total foodie. I love anything from a bakery and/or anything that’s homemade and fresh. Love experimenting with other countries’ food, too.
Social Media Site: I’m not a huge social media fan. I use it to reach my readers, but I don’t have a preference for any of the sites. I’m an extreme introvert. If I never spoke to anyone, I’d be happy but it’s not realistic when I’m in a business that requires me to be more social than I usually would be!

DNF Review: Grid Seekers by Logan Byrne

First, thanks to Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me to read a copy of this book.  I normally don't review my DNFs, but this one might be of interest to some people still, so I thought I'd go ahead and do a quick review.

The story is about a future where being plugged in to the big "Internet" or in this book, WorldNet, is a big part of life.  Anyone can use it, and do anything they want there, even things they may never get to do, like go to a beach, or visit another country.  But it isn't free, or cheap.  However, every year there is a lottery.  And people who are picked from the lottery compete to find some kind of treasure on a scavenger hunt type of competition.  Whoever wins will be rich beyond their wildest dreams.  Those that lose may go to jail, or other similarly unpleasant things.  In the past the competition was more violent, in that the contestants could and would kill each other.  The main character is Alexia, and she lives in one of the 6 megacities that are left in American, the New York City one.  While getting chosen would be a possibility of a better life, of course there are the other bad things if you don't win.  As you can guess, Alexia is chosen.

I didn't make it any farther.  As I read it was just too much exactly like The Hunger Games for me.  I just couldn't read on without constantly feeling that way. Even though this is a more modern world than in HG, Alexia still lives just with her mother and a younger sister.  And she tries to protect them.  And everyone sits and watches the night that they do the drawing.  And Alexia is a really tough girl, she works to help her family, doesn't go to school.  It was just too similar for me.  However I know some people enjoy reading the same type of story, and so those who do, and if they liked HG, then they will enjoy this.  To me there just wasn't enough originality to make it something I wanted to spend time on reading when there are so many new stories out there waiting to be read.

Review:

The main character as you see in the synopsis above is Harry Malone.  His father was a famous astronaut that died, or disappeared depending who you talk to, in a mysterious accident aboard a shuttle.  In this future, everyone has a sort of computer in their brain, along with it being connected to a main source.  In other words, people are constantly connected to the internet, but this also means that they are constantly  under surveillance by the corporation that put the implants in.   Harry is famous because of what happened to his father.  And his mother spends all her time kind of chasing any rumor or conspiracy theory that might give her answers to what happened to her husband.  Up until this time, Harry has been helping his mother, using types of drugs to kind of block or short out the implant for short amounts of time when things are needed to be kept off the radar. But as he gets close to finishing his training to become some kind of worker for the company, maybe even a pilot like his father, things start to happen.  A building named after his father blows up.  He loses his mother, and he also learns things about a rebel group, and someone else who has been close to him.  A girl comes into his life, and says he is needed to help the people who are trying to get things fair for everyone, and he must decide if she is worth trusting, or someone else that is out to get something from his family and their fame.

I liked the idea of a kind of Big Brother society, especially where people can be hooked into the "Internet" at all times.  I mean how many of us couldn't survive these days without our cell phone and being able to check Facebook whenever and wherever we are?  It definitely leads into the Big Brother theme in a very close way to where we are today.  I'm not quite done with the story, but am really enjoying it and can't wait to see how it all ends, or ends for this book.  My only complaint so far has to do with kind of a way of writing.  Sometimes a character will be referred to by their name, Harry Malone.  Sometimes they might be called "Trainee Malone."  And then other times they might be called by a nickname, Hank.  This would be okay if it was when people were speaking, so that you knew a trainer called them "Trainee", and a family member used the nickname, etc.  But often it is how the author refers to them, and within one page, and that is confusing at times.  Other than that, I am really enjoying this book.

AUTHOR BIO:
Tom Lewis served in the United States Marines, before attending college, and then law school. He currently practices entertainment law from his office in Santa Monica, California.

Mr. Lewis has written and sold several screenplays, and is currently in post-production on a motion picture he wrote, directed, and produced.

His novel, "Aftermath," is loosely based on one of his screenplays. In writing "Aftermath," his goal was to take his readers through a post-apocalyptic America, where civilization had been crushed in an alien attack. The reader is taken on this journey through the eyes of his protagonist, 16-year-old Paige O'Connor, and encounters this hostile new world as she does.

"Aftermath" is the first book in the "After the Fall Dystopian Series," which will continue to chronicle the adventures of Paige and the remnants of humanity in their struggle to survive, and ultimately reclaim our planet from the invaders.

Tell us about your debut novel:
The book’s called “Aftermath”.  It’s a fast-paced, dystopian sci fi actioner that follows a teenage girl’s struggles for survival in the increasingly hostile wake of civilization’s collapse, and humanity’s domination by an alien race of beings.  I’m calling it a “Hunger Games” with aliens.

“Aftermath” is the first novel in the “After the Fall” dystopian series, which will follow my heroine, Paige, and the remnants of humanity in their efforts to both survive, and reclaim our world.

Author Interview:
How did you get into writing?
I started writing screenplays in 1999, and had my first screenplay optioned that year.  I followed that up with several other screenplays, a few of which were optioned by production companies and ended up getting me hired for writing assignments.  Two of those scripts were made into movies which I produced and directed.  The first of those movies was picked up by Lionsgate for distribution, and we’re in negotiations with distributors on the second film, a spooky ghost story called “The Chanel”.  It’s about a teenage girl, who after surviving a near-death experience in a car crash, finds herself haunted by a shadowy figure she sees from the corner of her eye – something that followed her back from the other side of death.

You’re also an attorney?
Yes.  I practice entertainment law from my office in Santa Monica.  My clients are mainly producers, so that’s helped with getting my screenplays out there.  Before that, I served in the Marines.

Where did your interest in post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction come from?
My first exposure to the dystopian genre came about 4 years ago, when I was negotiating movie rights to a best-selling novel for one of my clients.  I read that novel, and then read the “Hunger Games” trilogy, and then I was hooked.  Dystopian, YA, NA, sci fi action, survival, and post-apocalyptic stories are far and away my favorites.

Where did the inspiration for Aftermath come from?
I came up with the idea for Aftermath about a year ago.  I was searching Amazon for something post-apocalyptic and dystopian, but with ordinary people thrown into that upside-down world. Most of the books I was finding had either elite commandos, or the threat wasn’t big enough, or there just wasn’t enough action, thrills, or scares.  So basically I wrote Aftermath as the story I wanted to read.  I originally started drafting it as a screenplay, but then I saw the potential of it as a series of novels.  The story is epic in scope – it follows the survivors through the end of civilization, and its conquest by this alien race.  And by doing it through novels, I wasn’t limited to budget considerations you have when writing screenplays.  But I did have the fun of shooting the trailer I made for the book.  You can see that trailer here:  https://vimeo.com/124008432

What's next for you?
I’m about halfway finished with the second installment in the series, and hope to publish it later this summer.  The working title is “The Whisperers.”

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE
The Birds

Destiny can be defined as a series of events that will necessarily happen to us. As inevitable as it is unpredictable, it’s a journey we’re all thrown into. Along the way it defines us, and shows us what we’re made of. And when we reach the end, we often find that it’s taken us in a direction we never could have imagined. This is one girl’s journey.
***
It started on a crisp spring day in the foothills of Los Angeles. The Westwood High Panthers’ girls soccer team took the field to a small audience of students and family members scattered throughout the wooden bleachers.
In the back row, as far away as possible from the other spectators, sat Paige O’Connor and Shelby Johnson. To anyone watching them, it was pretty obvious they weren’t there for the game. It was just an excuse to get out of their houses, soak up some sunshine, and get drunk on the rum Paige was pouring into a giant Big Gulp cup.
Paige had just turned sixteen, the legal driving age in California, but at the rate she got into trouble, it would be a long time before her parents let her get her license. Riding a bike everywhere sucked, but then so did listening to parents and teachers.
She was strikingly pretty and petite, and hated that things were expected of her because of that. She was going to hang out with who she wanted, dress the way she wanted, and look the way she wanted. So midway through her freshman year, she had chopped her long brunette hair down to shoulder length, and painted several blue streaks through it. Her mom nearly fainted, and of course it got her grounded, but then what else was new.
As for clothes, don’t even get her started. It was usually cargo pants, and a t-shirt, or sweatshirt on those rare cold days. And the more people complained, or rolled their eyes at her, the more dingy were the clothes she sought out.
Shelby had been her BFF since they were kids, and they shared everything together. Movies, gossip, sleepovers, secrets, clothes… you name it, and they shared it. And that’s what they were doing today.
Paige steadied her hand, as she emptied the rest of the rum into the cup. Shelby kept watch, while going on about her favorite topic - boys. And at the moment, that boy happened to be Paige’s older brother.
“I’m just saying, pretend for a minute Brad’s not your brother,” Shelby went on.
“We’re not having this conversation, Shelbs,” Paige replied, trying not to spill the rum.
            “But he’s cute.”
“He’s my brother,” Paige grumbled back, capping the cup. “No hitting on him.” She took a deep swig through the straw, shuddering at the taste.
            “That good?” Shelby smiled.
Paige nodded, passing her the cup.
“So who do you think is cute?” Shelby asked, ready to get the conversation back on track.
            “Nobody.”
“Oh, come on,” nagged Shelby. “If you had to pick someone.”
            “Okay, fine. Liam Hemsworth.”
“Someone you could actually meet,” Shelby clarified.
“Then we’re back to nobody,” Paige grinned, taking back the cup.
            “Seriously?”
            “Yup.”
“You, Paige O’Connor, are going to make such a pretty little spinster,” Shelby teased.
“I’m sixteen, Shelbs,” Paige laughed. “I don’t think they let you become a spinster till you’re at least like sixty.”
Shelby just shook her head. “Better start practicing those knitting skills, girl.”
Paige had to laugh. She loved Shelby to death, but man that girl could get annoying at times.
“Okay, new topic,” Paige jumped in. “What would you rather have during a zombie apocalypse? A gun, or a cross bow?” The topic of zombie apocalypse planning was always a favorite with the two girls.
Several rows down, a group of five girls glanced back at Paige and Shelby. Paige caught them staring. The girls turned back to each other, giggling in that way where they want you to know they’re giggling.
“Hands down, a gun,” Shelby replied, ignoring the girls.
“So you want every zombie in the area to hear you?”
“I wanna make sure they’re dead. Plus, it doesn’t take forever to reload,” Shelby responded.
“But a cross bow just looks so bad ass,” Paige countered, catching the group of girls staring again. This was getting old.
“You just wanna look like Jennifer Lawrence,” Shelby continued.
“I wanna look like Norman Reedus,” Paige grinned back.
Then that group of mean girls was at it again. Glancing back, then turning to each other in annoying giggles. Paige had had it.
“You got a problem?” Paige hollered at them.
Cindy Willis was the tallest of the girls. Captain of the girl’s volleyball team, and at least seven inches taller than Paige, she shot Paige a glare. “Yeah. You, O’Connor,” Cindy snorted.
            “Screw you!” Paige shot back.
“What was that?” Cindy was on her feet, stalking up the steps towards Paige and Shelby. Cindy’s minions followed behind.
Paige rose to her feet, followed by Shelby. Both stood their ground. “You heard me,” Paige responded.
“Yeah,” said Cindy, “I heard you trying to be tough in front of your girlfriend here.”
            “Fuck off,” Paige snorted.
Cindy shoved Paige in the chest, knocking her back on the row behind her. Paige hopped to her feet, and lunged at the tall volleyball player, tackling her onto the bench, and pummeling her. Cindy squirmed and struggled beneath the blows, but Paige was just too quick.
“Break it up!” came a shout from the field. It was an all too familiar voice for Paige. She backed off of Cindy, and looked towards the field. The school’s principal was storming their way. Several of the girls grumbled beneath their breaths.
“What the hell’s going on?” demanded the principal as he reached the girls.
“This freak attacked me for no reason!” Said Cindy, wiping a trickle of blood from beneath her nose.
“She did not! You pushed her first,” Shelby jumped in.
“Is that alcohol on your breath?” asked the principal. Shelby and Paige both closed their mouths, looking more than a bit suspicious.
“Check their cup,” said Cindy’s minion, Stacy.
“You five, get back to your seats,” said the principal, turning to Cindy and her friends. “I’ll see you all on Monday.” The mean girls grumbled beneath their breaths, but knew better than to argue. They stomped back to their seats. The principal turned back to Paige and Shelby.
“What the hell’s your problem, O’Connor,” he asked, more out of disappointment than anger.
            Paige just shrugged. “Nothing.”
But he wasn’t going to let it rest. “No, I’m serious,” he continued. “How is it that your brother’s an honor student, class president, and actually has a future. And here you are, this… mess?”
“Maybe I just don’t feel like sucking up to people,” she replied.
“Or maybe you’re too scared to even try. Afraid you might not cut it.” He knew he was hitting a nerve with this one, but he also knew he had to go there.
“Go to hell!” she shot back.
“You’re coming with me. Both of you,” he demanded, motioning to Shelby as well.
“I’m not going anywhere,” Paige replied, folding her arms across her chest.
“Oh, yes you are,” he insisted. “We’re calling your parents.”
            “They’re not home.”
            “Then I’ll call their cells.”
That’s when a loud groan filled the air. Like an enormous metal object bending under stress. The principal and girls barely had time to look around, when suddenly the ground shook with a violent jolt. The principal stumbled, trying to maintain his balance. Down on the soccer field everyone had stopped, waiting to see if more jolts would follow.
“What was that?” asked Shelby, a startled look on her face.
“Look!” Paige shouted, pointing to a transformer mounted to a nearby telephone pole. Sparks showered from the side of it down onto the dirt track circling the field.
Then a static charge filled the air, causing their skin to tingle. The girls brushed their hands down their arms.
Suddenly something large and black dropped to the bleachers beside them. The girls leaped back with a startled yelp. A dead raven lay there, its feathers sizzling with smoke.
“Look out!” the principal shouted, seconds before another bird crashed down. This one also sizzled with smoke. Then came another, and another. They were raining down on the bleachers and field.
Then came a loud crack! The transformer broke off the telephone pole, and crashed down onto the dirt track in a shower of sparks.
“Keith! Get everyone in the locker room!” shouted the principal, as he hurried down the bleachers towards the sidelines.
Paige turned to Shelby. “Let’s go!” she said, hopping to her feet. The girls raced down the bleachers, and over to their bikes parked along the track.
