Sunday Post #78 and Stacking the Shelves January 29th, 2017

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted  @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news ~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme.   So, I haven't kept up with this very well this year.  I think I'm going to change how I do this a little.  I think I'll just talk about how my week has been, and what I'm looking forward to, and then do my Stacking the Shelves at the bottom.  I'll save the more specific information for end of the month posts.

First of all, it's been a kind of rough week.  I lost a friend, who is also a self-published author, because she finally got around to reading the reviews I posted of her two last books, and she wasn't happy with what I said.  I am not going to talk anymore about it, other than she said in her email to me that I needed to quit picking on self-published authors, and I am going to defend myself on that because three of my favorite books last year were self-published, two of them from debut authors, so I'm pretty sure that is not true.  Anyway, if I talk anymore about it, I'll get into being petty and I'm not going to sink to that level.  However, I have to admit this is my first bad experience with an author.  And to think it was someone I thought I knew.

Then, I got some shaming from someone who doesn't understand the whole LuLaRoe thing.  Anyone else out there in love with LuLaRoe?  I am, but didn't need this pressure from that person.

Also, trip to the dentist, only to mean that I found out all the work I need to do on my teeth and how much money I'm going to owe them.

On a more positive note, I found out that there is a high school library position in my state that is an International Baccalaureate school, which is the type of high school I currently work at.  Also, I got a screening interview set up for my old school district for a library job this week.

I found a sorority sister who is going to let me stay at her house in Orlando for Apollycon in March.  So yay!  I also heard about a romance book convention that is going to be in Kansas City in March, and I'm really excited about it because one of the sexy cover models I follow on Facebook is supposed to be there!  I sooooooo want to get a picture with him.  I mean, check him out, wouldn't you?

Next week on Tuesday I have my LuLaRoe party, very excited for that.  Oh yeah, last weekend I also got go visit my grandpuppies.  It is the 3rd litter that my dachshund is the father of.  Here is a picture of the 6 adorable babies:

Blog-wise, I actually got quite a few reviews in this past week!  So I'm totally on track with that.

How was your week?  Anything exciting coming up for you this week?

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.  It is a way for us to share the new books we have collected.   As always, way too many e-books to share, although there are a few I want to.  And these books are over more than just one week.  Here we go.

E-galleys:

So excited to read Redux, and also intrigued by the pre-novella for the Houck series.

E-books:

The first one is free from the Romance Read-of-the-Month Club.  The second one I won in a giveaway from the author!  Can't wait to read these!

Physical books:

Here you can see my awesome last package from my OTSP Secret Sister.  Not only did I get a copy of Hopeless, but I also got an Amazon gift card that I bought some ebooks with!

These are the books I bought over the last couple of weeks.  The Shack I bought tonight, and I'm going to read it as part of my local library's reading program, this year is about books that have been made into movies.  And I've been told by a lot of people that it is a good read.

One of the perks of working a bookstore is the stripped cover books.  These are three that I got today.  Very excited to read them.  Whenever I can get to them.

Two awesome ARCs this week!  The first one I won through a Shelf Awareness newsletter contest.  The second is from the publisher.

One of my favorite self-published authors sent me a copy of her book!  I loved Road-Tripped by Nicole Archer soooo much!  We're also friends on Facebook, and she was kind of making fun of the leggings and LuLaRoe stuff one day.  As I mentioned above I love them, so it is something we had a little running joke about.

So that's what I added to my shelves this weekend.  How about you? What are the new books on your shelves?

  1. Such cute puppies! They are so adorable! I really need to get that Buffy colouring book...WANT! Sad to see the issues you had with the author friend. It looks like she was happy being your friend until you weren't gushing over her book...so frankly was she ever a real friend, or just looking for followers who will gush over her work? A real friend could seperate work and friendship issues. Personally I judge self published and mainstream authors exactly the same as in my opinion, if you put your name to your work and sell it to book readers, then you should expect to be judged on your content. You didn't do anything wrong at all and your friend lost a great opportunity to get lots of honest feedback to use in improving her writing and instead went off in a snit!

    1. I love the puppies. I get to go play with them, but they are at the breeders, so I don't have to worry about taking care of them or anything. I can't wait to start coloring in my Buffy coloring book! Like you I judge both self published and mainstream the same, although I give a tiny bit of leeway on some editing mishaps with self published. But the ones in the last book I read by my friend were just so many! And I had even offered to help with editing, free of charge, but she refused. Oh well. I'm looking at it as her loss. Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Loved seeing what you got. Sorry that you had a rough week with your friend. That can be tough. Good luck on the librarian jobs. I now wish I had gone to school for that. It sounds like a fun job.

    1. I love my current library job, but, I really need to get back to the state I live in for many reasons. It is so hard to have friends like that. But then again, I guess maybe we weren't really friends. Thanks for visiting!

  5. So many books, as usual! When will you find the time to read all?! I feel like we need to have one day a week to sit and read. Or maybe ten. ;)

I'm going to be honest for a second - there are a number of self-published authors that need to grow some thick skin. Reviews aren't for authors to read - they're for readers to read. I'm sorry you lost that author as a friend but meh, good riddance.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy all of your new books! Have a fabulous week, Lisa. =)

    1. Oh my gosh, I know that I'll never read them all. If you could see how many free ebooks I'm getting on Amazon, well, let's just say I need an intervention. The sad thing was that it was someone who was a friend before they were even a published author! Oh well. Guess they weren't really a friend anyway. Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I love LuLaRoe! I'm sure people have said body shaming things about me, but I haven't heard them so I am going to continue wearing them. They are comfortable!
Sorry you had a bad experience with an author who didn't like the review. That is super tough to deal with. Luckily, I haven't had too many issues, but it does make me VERY picky about the authors I read. It sucks that a few overly sensitive authors can spoil others chances.
Hope you have a great week!

    1. Yeah, I love them. Had a party last night and ended up with a whole outfit for free from having my friends come!

It was even harder because it was someone who was a friend long before she ever started self publishing. It is the first issue I've had though, and hopefully the last.

      Thanks for visiting!

  8. Cute puppies! Sorry to hear about the friend issue- that is sad but it sounds like it's really not your fault. I mean one needs to be honest whn reviewing right? It's tough... good luck with the library position though!

I like that cover of Redux.

That Lunar New Year tag is awesome!

    1. I feel like reviews should be honest, and that's why I rarely review books I don't like. I usually DNF them. Thanks for visiting!

  9. Puppies! I love them! Sorry it was a hard week for you. Reviewing self-published books is difficult because some of the authors get defensive and take things personally. It sucks that the author is your friend, though. I hope next week is better for you.

    1. I'm debating on how to deal with it. I want to give her time and maybe she'll realize she was being crazy, but if not, then I will move on. I love my little grandpuppies too! Thanks for stopping by!

  11. Judging by the amount of comments, there are plenty of people who do like what you have to say, so don't let anyone else spoil your happy! Dachshund puppies, eh? They must be tiny! :O)

Here's my Stacking the Shelves post.

    1. Yeah, I feel like I'm not going to stop reading and reviewing. I just won't read or review her books anymore. The puppies were really tiny when they were born. Fit in my hand! They're a little bigger now, still pretty tiny! Thanks for stopping by!

  14. HUG!!!! Seriously... why do people even bother saying anything at all if it can't be nice!! I don't wear LuLaRoe but that's just because it's not my style. I'm not going to say "you suck" because we don't have the same tastes! Sheesh!!!

And don't even sweat another minute about the author "friend". What "Chucklesthecat" said is true. And a lot of self-pubs need to grow a thicker skin. Especially if she turned down your editing help. I actually review self-pubs exactly like you do - I give them the editing lee-way but only so much.

I support you!! Just keep doing what you're doing :) You're great!!!!

    1. Yeah, I always give lee-way for editing on self-publishing. But this one was really like she'd just quit even worrying about it at a certain point. But what can you do? If she plans to keep writing and get bigger, she's going to have to get used to bad reviews, and mine wasn't even bad! Oh well. Thanks for supporting me. I love my blogger friends! Hope you have a great week, and thanks for visiting!

  17. Sorry you had kind of a crummy week. The situation with your author friend sounds especially disheartening. It's such a tough line when there's an author that you interact with regularly and you just aren't thrilled with their book. I've had that happen before, but the author was gracious---sorry that wasn't the case here.

    1. Well this was someone that I was friends with before she even began publishing. We worked together. So that's what was so ridiculous. So far this week is better. Thanks for stopping by!
