This week was harder than I thought!  I assumed trains would be pretty easy, but they were not!  So I have three covers of books I have read, and two that are from my TBR list.

Torn (The Missing: Book 4) by Margaret Peterson Haddix

This is my 3rd sequel towards my September is for Sequels Challenge goal.  I don't think I'm going to make my goal of 8 books unfortunately, but I'm hoping to at least get what I set the minimum as 4.  I don't know that I included this on my original list either.  But it has been sitting on my TBR shelf since last October, when our school had the book fair and I got it for a good price.  Plus I saw there is a new one in the series after this one, so I need to get ahead and ready to read that one too.
When we left off in book 3, Jonah and his sister Katherine had been sent ahead to 1611, and didn't know where they were or why.  And it turns out they'd been sent to Henry Hudson's ship on what was his final voyage looking for the Northwest Passage.  Jonah must pose as John Hudson, Henry's son, who was one of the children taken from history.  Katherine must stay invisible.  But just as they reach the boat, a mutiny has begun, and Jonah is knocked out.  Or his tracer of John Hudson is.  And now they're thrown off the boat into the smaller boat called a shallop, with his father and the other sick and weak men from the ship.  As they're floating there, wondering if this is the end, something strange happens.  The ship comes back and pulls them back on, one of the men has overtaken the mutineers and come back to rescue Henry.  Not only that, he leaves the mutineers on the ice.  Now, this is a big change in history.  The man who did this, Prickett, seems off to Jonah.  Something about him, his voice, his actions, seems familiar.  And Jonah and Katherine soon find out he is really Second, wearing a disguise to make him look like Prickett, just like Jonah is wearing to look like John Hudson.  Eventually, they learn that time is really unraveling, there are many signs.  And they learn that at those times, there are different rules than they originally thought.  Jonah must still try to help Second in order to try to save Andrea.  And while the bargain is somewhat kept to Second's satisfaction, other things become changed.
I think the reason this was less "fun" for me, is that the story of Hudson isn't as big a story as the other books have covered.  And the last one, the story of Roanoke, was a story I was really fascinated with.  I'm glad to see another book coming out though, because I do want to know what will happen next, and what JB's last comment of "Have fun . . . while you still can." refers to.

Waiting On Wednesday - Torn (Missing book 4) by Margaret Peterson Haddix

I saw the ad for this in a recent Shelf Awareness newsletter and just keep forgetting or getting too busy to blog about it on Wednesdays. I've really enjoyed this series since I read the first one as a possible Mark Twain Book award nominee a couple years ago.

Where we left our main characters was on their way out of Roanoke in 1600, now Jonah and Katherine are in 1611 right before a mutiny on Henry Hudson's ship. This series is the story of children who were kidnapped out of time periods right before they would die and then adopted to people in the future. They are now trying to go back to their original time periods to fix history. And we just left one at Roanoke Island.

Sabotaged by Margaret Peterson Haddix

Well, I posted this as a Waiting on Wednesday, last week I think, and then it was actually already out I saw the next night when I went into work at the bookstore. So, I checked it out. In this storyline, we rejoin Jonah and Katherine, siblings, Jonah one of the kids that had been snatched from time. This time they are going to help Andrea, also one of the missing kids, go back to her own time. Andrea was Virginia Dare, said to be the first child born in America from an English colony. She was part of the Roanoke colony that disappeared. In the current time, Andrea's adoptive parents had died in a car accident. When we first begin the trip back in time, Andrea sabotages the Elucidator, the thing that helps them talk to their contact in the future. And now they're stuck in the past, with no way of contact as far as they know. And at the wrong time as far as they know. Turns out someone named Second, told Andrea she could go back and save her adoptive parents first. This Second person wants to change history for the better. So many things on this trip are based on what he has done. They do end up at the right time, to save Virginia's father and do what they want her to do. But what the character who ends up being Second does changes history, and sends ripples through time. While trying to come back to the present, Jonah and Katherine get stuck in 1611, where they can fix things hopefully, and that is where the story ends.

Again, I love the history in these books. The disappearance of the colony at Roanoke is a mystery, and an intriguing one. There is also the word Croatoan that was found at this empty village that has led many to come up with all kinds of crazy stories on what happened. I like at the end where the author talks about all the research and the theories she found that are so much more likely to be what has happened. Great book, and can't wait for the next one! Still wondering what famous child in history that we will find out Jonah is. I think it's so great I was introduced to this series through reading the Mark Twain nominees.
