I've got three books that I read physical copies of that sort of fit together for this post. One is an adult science fiction, one is more new adult paranormal romance/fiction, and the third is YA paranormal. So I decided to group them all together.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch:
Genre: Adult science fiction
Published: July 26th, 2016
Source: Checked out book as part of employee lending program at bookstore where I work part time
My rating: 4 stars
I'm a fan of time travel and alternate realities. I am definitely a subscriber to the multi-verse theory that there are all different worlds out there, each based on one little change in a decision that was made creating a different future. When the bookstore I work at part time chose this to be one of the push books, back in June I believe, I was actually excited they'd chosen a book that for once I might actually want to read so that I could help promote it as more than just the store push book. I did really enjoy this. It had a great idea behind it, and really it made you think about how should it really end? Who really is the "right" one? There were times that it was very hard to put down, and other times that it did move a little slow, but in the end I was definitely pleased overall with the story.
Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:
“Are you happy with your life?”
Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.
Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.
Before a man Jason’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”
In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.
Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined—one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.
From the author of the bestselling Wayward Pines trilogy, Dark Matter is a brilliantly plotted tale that is at once sweeping and intimate, mind-bendingly strange and profoundly human—a relentlessly surprising science-fiction thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.
The Return (Titan #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout:
Genre: NA Paranormal Romance
Published: February 16th, 2015
Source: I think I won a copy from the author on her Facebook group at one point?
My rating: 4 stars
I love Seth. As much as I knew he wasn't the right one for Alex in the Covenant series, I still adored him. I could maybe compare it to how I loved Jacob in the Twilight universe, but not for Bella. This book definitely took this wonderful world created by Armentrout into a new direction, one that was definitely an exciting place to be. As usual, something I love that the author does a lot, was that she tied in the tv show Supernatural. I also like that this means her stories will often take place in Missouri or Kansas, the two states I live and work in, so it makes them have a personal connection for me. As part of the giveaway, I believe I won the other books in this series as well, so I look forward to reading on and finding out how Seth will do with his new interest, Josie. And I do snicker every time she calls him Sethie. Did I mention how cool it was meeting the guy who is the cover model for the books at Apollycon? And that I got to go get him and the other ones coffee? :-)
Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:
The Fates are cackling their bony asses off…
It’s been a year since Seth made the deal with the gods that pledged his life to them. And so far, the jobs they’ve given him have been violent and bloody–which is kind of all right with him. But now Apollo has something else in mind for Seth. He’s got to play protector while keeping his hands and fingers off, and for someone who really has a problem with restraint, this new assignment might be the most challenging yet.
Josie has no idea what this crazy hot guy’s deal might be, but it’s a good bet that his arrival means the new life she started after leaving home is about to be thrown into an Olympian-sized blender turned up to puree. Either Josie is going insane or a nightmare straight out of ancient myth is gunning for her.
But it might be the unlikely attraction simmering between her and the golden-eyed, secret-keeping Seth that may prove to be the most dangerous thing of all.
Because history has once again been flipped to repeat.
The Sacrifice of Sunshine Girl (The Haunting of Sunshine Girl #3) by Paige McKenzie:
Genre: YA Paranormal
Published: April 4th, 2017
Source: ARC received after requesting one from author to review
My rating: 4 stars
I did really like this book. It really had some great moments, and definitely added to the whole luiseach mythology that it began in book one and continued well throughout the series. The ending was done very well, and very original and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately, about halfway through I got a little bogged down and moved on to other books, and then it took me a little bit before I was in the mood or not swamped down with other review books and was ready to pick it back up. There honestly were a lot of twists, and that is a good thing. It really kept me going when I did pick it up. It made it hard to put down once I did pick it up and had some time to read. There were many characters throughout that I wondered about, and then there were several new ones that you grew to really like, only to have them ripped away, or else only to find out they weren't who you thought they were. I loved the big showdown at the end, and loved the way that Sunshine had to basically sacrifice herself to save the day. Very "Buffy-esque" in my opinion, and anyone who knows me, knows how much I love Buffy and what high praise that is coming from me. As I read more and more adult romance these days though, I was definitely reminded of how squeaky clean this story was in the love department. Not a bad thing at all. It is just definitely something you can recommend if you want to make sure that there isn't too much of that for the teen you are giving it to. If you're interested in my reviews of the first two books, you can go HERE (Book 1) and HERE (Book 2). Since this is a sequel, I'm counting it as half of one of the books for my September is for Sequels Challenge, since I started it before September, and technically doesn't count.
You should also remember this is based on a YouTube series, which you can go check out HERE.
Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:
Sunshine Griffith can communicate with ghosts. Even more amazing—to herself; her boyfriend, Nolan; and her adoptive mom, Kat—she’s recently learned she’s a luiseach, one of an ancient race of creatures who have lived among humans for centuries, protecting them from dark spirits and helping them move on to the afterlife.
Having survived an abyss full of demons, Sunshine Griffith must figure out who—or what—has been organizing the forces of darkness against her. Do they want to destroy her and the rest of the endangered luiseach? Do they want to take over the world? Nolan has figured out that Sunshine’s death would trigger a calamitous event, so not only does she have to stay alive for herself, but for the fate of civilization. It’s not just the demons who want Sunshine dead, though. Her biological mother, Helena, is back. And what is Helena’s history with the mysterious man in black?
Fortunately for Sunshine, she has a lot of people (and ghosts) to help her stop the darkness: Nolan, her father and mentor Aidan, her mom Kat, Victoria, Lucio, Anna, and Ashley—whose handsome new crush, Sebastian, seems hauntingly familiar. But time may be running out as an unexpected event unleashes a fierce war between the luiseach and the demon army. In the midst of the fiery battle, Sunshine will learn a shocking truth about herself and what sort of sacrifice is required to save the world.

“Talk about bad timing,” laughed Sam.
I rolled over on my mattress to see him staring out my side window. “What is it?”
“Your new neighbor’s just arrived.”
Hanna had spent most of the past hour stealing looks, hoping for even a glimpse of the guy in question with no such luck. Despite the humor in Hanna’s horrible timing, I still groaned. The view in question looked literally right out into the neighboring window not ten feet away, guaranteeing zero privacy. So it was official. I’d have to keep my window shades permanently pulled from here on out.
“Sure it’s not just one of the movers? They’re all pretty young,” I said.
Sam chuckled. “Trust me; this guy isn’t dressed for the job. He’s not really dressed, period.”
“What?” Curiosity got the better of me. I climbed off the mattress, joining my friend at the window.
Sam sidled aside and flipped on the light switch to admire my new setup as I went to the music dock, using its location below the window as an excuse to steal a casual look across the way. I didn’t even have to make a song selection. As soon as I touched the radio, Arctic Monkeys’ “Do I Wanna Know” suddenly started playing. I scooped up my phone, which was synced with the device, searching for the song in question. Since when was this on my playlist?
“What’s wrong?” asked Sam, clearly noting my bafflement.
Before I could so much as articulate a single syllable, my eyes instinctively shot up to the window at the sight of movement across the way. That building heat in my chest roared to life, making my knees out-and-out buckle.
Sam wasn’t kidding. My new neighbor wasn’t wearing much of anything, apart from a pair of black jeans that hung dangerously low, revealing the chiseled V-shaped section of his lower abdominals that rivaled Apollo himself.
I outright gawked, feeling my phone slip from my limp fingers. It clattered on the hardwood, but I didn’t care. I just kept staring.
This couldn’t be.
This couldn’t be.
This couldn’t be.
My new neighbor slipped on the matching black dress shirt in his hands, but didn’t bother buttoning it. Instead, he simply rolled the cuffs up his sleeves just enough to display the black metallic tattoos brandishing his left arm.
“You okay?” Sam reiterated.
I didn’t move—couldn’t move.
My neighbor.
He all so casually looked up, not the least bit surprised to find me ogling at him, and straightened the collar to his opened shirt. That taut frame flexed as he raised his arms, lazily resting them on the top of the opened window. A slow, devious smile pulled at his lips.
Finally regaining control over my body, I stumbled back a step, still unable to peel my eyes away from him. I whirled, preparing to bolt for the door. I was cut short though, smacking into something—hard.
Sam.
I’d run right into him.
“Geez!” he yelped.
My momentum toppled us over, and I landed on top of him as he smacked down on the area rug.
“Owww.” He winced with a laugh, and I rolled off him with an apology. “What’s with you?”
Ding dong!
Shit!
He couldn’t possibly have gotten over here that fast…
I shot up from the carpet, ignoring Sam’s insistency, and raced for the staircase.
“Don’t answer the—” I rounded the banister, just in time to see my Aunt Jenna pull the front door open. Crashing to a halt at the bottom of the landing, I was paralyzed in place as magnetic icy eyes and bleached blonde hair greeted me on the other side of the entryway.
“Hello, lovely,” Blaine purred.

Two Reviews: Elixir and Apollyon (Covenant #3.5 and #4) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
So I read both of these books really close together, which makes sense because Elixir is a short novella that goes with Apollyon. So I'll do some basic reviews. I don't want to give away too much either since this is so far along in the series. So I'll probably just share the blurbs from Goodreads and then give my thoughts instead of my usual personal summary.
Title: Elixir
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Series: Covenant #3.5
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Published: November 22nd, 2012
Source: Purchased copy
My rating: 4 stars
Aiden St. Delphi will do anything to save Alex. Even if it means doing the one thing he will never forgive himself for. Even if it means making war against the gods.
As you can see, the blurb doesn't tell you much, so I'll explain a little more. This is a very short story about right after book 3 when Alex has connected completely with Seth, the other Apollyon, and she now wants to do whatever he wants, and it seems they've found out he isn't really up to good, and there is someone behind him, leading him along the wrong path. Aiden grabs Alex and puts her in a cage, trying to figure out a way to sever the connection, and get his Alex, who he had just recently given in to the feelings he had for her, even as much as it against all of their rules.
Title: Apollyon
Series: Covenant #4
Published: April 4th, 2013
Source: Purchased copy
My rating: 4 stars
Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.
Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.
The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.
Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.
So, I honestly didn't enjoy this one as much as I had the rest of the series, while I gave it four stars, I almost dropped it to 3.5. Maybe because there wasn't enough of Seth in it? I don't know. Some things I did really enjoy about this one were all the Supernatural tv series references, and now I really want to go to Stull Cemetery in Kansas, since it's only about an hour from where I live in Missouri, on the border of Kansas.
I am definitely looking forward to reading book 5, it should be on my list soon! If you'd like to catch up on my reviews of the first three books, here are the links to each of them: Half-Blood, Pure, and Deity.

All Kat Montgomery wanted was a fun night out on the town. What she got was a death warrant. As it turns out, the quaint little hamlet of Mystic Harbor, Maine houses more than sandy beaches and adorable B&B’s. Beneath the New England charm rests a deadly world where shifters, demons, vampires, and angelic hunters all vie for power.
A world where magic is the greatest weapon.
Magic that Kat now possesses.
After that one fateful night, she can feel the changes beginning to take hold of her. Only problem, she doesn’t even know what she’s turning into. With threats hiding in plain sight, deciphering the lines between friend and foe is nearly impossible. Kat’s very soul is at stake, and destiny doesn't seem to be playing out in her favor. Can these two unlikely partners challenge fate itself before it's too late?
EXCERPT:
Curiosity got the better of me as I looked over my shoulder, only to find the last human being I ever wanted to see heading towards the back of the store. That familiar knot formed in my stomach, as it always did anytime Reese Blackburn was near. I rocked back and forth on my heels, trying my best to keep my patience in check as the old guy in front of me continued buying virtually every lottery ticket available.
Come on, come on, come on. I needed to get out of here. PRONTO.
Footsteps started making their way to the counter from the back of the store, and I immediately deflated, knowing a confrontation was now inevitable.
“Montgomery,” spoke a silvery voice directly behind me.
I regrettably turned to face the ass-hat in question, giving him my best artificial, Pan Am smile. “Blackburn.”
The guy always looked like he’d just waltzed off the set of a Tim Burton movie, and tonight was no different. He was dressed in his typically peculiar attire, sporting a gothic knee-length horseman’s jacket laced in chains, a pair of black slacks, a silk tapestry vest, and dark brogue boots adorned with skulls on the metallic buckles.
“Never thought I’d see you south of Providence Street,” he remarked in the sarcastic fashion he always saved for me. “Get lost on your way to the country club?”
“No, I was actually out looking for your heart. Should’ve known better that it’s long gone,” I retorted. “And what about you? Never thought I’d see you out in public on a full moon. Get lost on your way to your cult meeting in the woods?”
“That’s later in the evening,” he chuckled, flashing me that dimpled smile and perfect set of pearly whites. Such infectious, boyish charm seemed misplaced, considering he was stab-worthy. It really was a shame, because Reese wasn’t half bad looking.
And by ‘half’, I mean not entirely.
Sure, he had cheekbones that could cut glass, not to mention bedroom eyes so amber they looked to be stowing flames inside them, but still… Okay, okay. Even I had to admit, Blackburn was hardly an eyesore.
Even with my heeled boots, I still stood a good half foot shorter than him, but his lean frame thankfully made him less imposing.
The old guy in front of me started ordering cigarettes as well, causing my fisted fingernails to start biting into my palms. Knowing how quickly our conversations always descended into verbal smack downs, I grasped at anything I could think of to divert us back to small talk until I could move to the register.
“Did you go to the game earlier?”
Reese shrugged. “I considered it, but then I started thinking of other excruciating things I’d rather do, like have a root canal, and I decided to pass.”
“You heading to the bonfire?” I tried again. He merely cocked a brow, and I realized how ridiculous I sounded. “Oh, that’s right. You don’t do anything fun. How could I forget?”
“If you call watching a bunch of drunken idiots gyrate around and trash a field while you suffocate from smoke inhalation ‘fun,’ then yes—I don’t like fun.”
“It wouldn’t kill you to be normal, ya’ know.”
“Maybe, maybe not. Haven’t tried it.”
“So, Mr. High and Mighty, what superior plans do you have this evening?”
“Test my alcohol limits, take off my clothes, and harass innocent bystanders.” He thumped the side of his head. “Oh, wait a minute. No, that’s your friends.”
“At least I have some.”
He stole a look outside and leered. “With friends like that, I consider myself grateful that I don’t.”
“Bite me.”
“I probably shouldn’t. Wouldn’t want to get rabies.”
“I beg to differ. Foaming at the mouth would probably be an improvement for you. Anything to get you to stop talking.”
He smirked.“Touché, Princess.”
