Author: Lisa Becker

Narrator: Suzanne Barbetta

Length: 8 hours 11 minutes

Publisher: Lisa Willet Becker

Released: May 30, 2018

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Clutch: a novel is the laugh-out-loud, chick lit romance chronicling the dating misadventures of Caroline Johnson, a single purse designer who compares her unsuccessful romantic relationships to styles of handbags – the “Hobo” starving artist, the “Diaper Bag” single dad, the “Briefcase” intense businessman, etc. With her best friend, bar owner Mike by her side, the overly-accommodating Caroline drinks a lot of Chardonnay, puts her heart on the line, endures her share of unworthy suitors and finds the courage to discover the “Clutch” or someone she wants to hold onto.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Lisa Becker. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.
My rating: 4 stars

I loved the idea behind this story, and since I loved the other book I read by this author, Links,  I signed up to review the audiobook of this.  I am a bit of a purse lover, so I looked forward to that part of the story.  I loved how the author used the different types of purses to describe each of the men in the main character, Caroline's life.  The book started out a little bit slow and hard for me to read.  I didn't connect with Caroline at first, as she just seemed so naive.  Now, with the first guy, an artist, we got some of the story kind of from his point of view.  However, for the rest of the story, we didn't get that from the other guys, we only got to see Caroline's side.  I think that hurt my view of her to start the story, because not only was it obvious what a douchebag that guy was, we got to actually see him being that way even when she wasn't around.

With the next guy though, my connection to Caroline filled in, and I was hooked.  It seemed Mike might have been destined to just be her best friend, but I knew from the about a quarter of the way in that he and Caroline were meant to be together.  Even if neither of them saw it, while everyone around them seemed to.  Included Caroline's aunt Mimi, who created her love of handbags to start with.  If only Caroline had taken Mimi's thoughts to heart sooner, maybe she could have saved herself some of the heartbreak of her parade of guys throughout the story. Although, not sure Mike was really ready for her yet, even if towards the end we find out just how long he might have felt more about her.

As we got to follow Caroline through her relationships, I did connect with her feelings a lot of the time. Like feeling guilty because she didn't really see the nice guy as anything more than a friend.  Then of course was the guy who had gone all religious, so much that he got upset at Caroline for using the Lord's name in vain when they were getting hot and heavy.  The fact that he reconciled premarital sex as being okay even with his holy roller attitude was just such a guy thing.  Been there, seen those guys!  Another place I've been, is going back to try to give a guy a second chance, only to find it too late, and that they've already moved on.  I cried quite a bit at that part, was totally feeling all that Caroline was.

I mentioned how I loved that the author used different types of purses to describe each guy.  It worked perfectly.  And then there was the chapter where we had the chef, but it was a make-up bag.  I was so confused about that, at first, couldn't figure out where that was going.  Until I did.  And then, wow, I did not see that one going!  And it really made me think about what I would do in that case!

I highly recommend listening to this one.  Give it the first guy to get through and you will be pleased!  The happily ever after is one that was well earned, if you're like me, you'll be rooting for Mike at the end.  I also love how the author made sure we knew just how things were going to go for them after the HEA.  Also great was that we started out with the first guy's point of view, we also end up with the "clutch" guy's point of view at the end.  Made a perfect bookend for the story.

Q&A with Author Lisa Becker

  • Were there any real-life inspirations behind your writing?
    • When I was writing the Click trilogy, (Click: An Online Love Story, Double Click, and Right Click), I was obsessed with NCIS re-runs and would have the show on in the background as I wrote. There was an episode where a character refers to a man as a “handbag husband,” or something useless you carry on your arm. I started thinking about that, and the idea for Clutch grew from there. I believe that everyone deserves a happily ever after and would like to think there’s a “clutch,” or someone worth holding onto, out there for everyone.
  • If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles?
    • I think Eloise Mumford, who played Kate in Fifty Shades of Grey, would make an outstanding Caroline. She has the right mixture of warmth, gumption, vulnerability, and beauty to bring this character to life. I still can’t decide who would play Mike, although I know I’d love to sit in on those casting sessions. ;)
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel?
    • In the past, when I’ve typed the final “the end” on a manuscript, I celebrate with a box of my favorite chocolates. However, with Clutch, I thought it fitting to buy myself a new purse – a Michael Kors shoulder bag that I use every day.
  • How did you select your narrator?
    • When searching for a narrator, it was important for me to find someone who really understood not only the individuality of each character but the unique dynamic between the two main leads. I needed someone who could make Caroline relatable and showcase her intelligence, ambition, vulnerability and hopefulness in finding true love. And at the same time, the narrator needed to bring to life Mike’s irreverence, sense of humor, loyalty and drive. Early on in my search, I was lucky to find the very talented Suzanne Barbetta who was able to capture all of this effortlessly.
  • Do you have any tips for authors going through the process of turning their books into audiobooks?
    • Spend the time and money necessary to find the right partner who is professional, personable and truly gets the material. There’s a magic that happens when the connection is right, and you’ll reap the benefits from that to more than compensate for your initial investment.
  • Is there a particular part of this story that you feel is more resonating in the audiobook performance than in the book format?
    • There are quite a number of a quick-witted exchanges between Caroline and Mike including the use of clever puns and rapid-fire jokes back and forth. I think an audiobook is a great way for those to come across and bring out the humor in the story, as long as you have a talented narrator with comedic timing and an understanding of the dynamics between characters. Again, I feel so lucky to be working with the talented Suzanne Barbetta as she was able to capture the chemistry between these two characters, which is the heart of the story.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or as inferior to “real reading”?
    • I love the idea of audiobooks and giving people the opportunity to enjoy amazing storytelling in a convenient and accessible way. So, whether you want to read a book in a traditional manner or listen to a story while exercising, making dinner, lounging around or doing a myriad of other things, the important point is that you are enjoying the escapism and the beauty of the written word.
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing?
    • Clutch actually started out as a screenplay that had been optioned by a production company at Sony Studios. The movie didn’t progress past the initial stages, so I turned it into a novel to bring this light and breezy story about love and handbags to the public. It was only after I received so many positive reviews of the story, its characters, humor and heart, did I think to turn it into an audiobook. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to expand the reach of this story that hopefully will inspire people to seek out their own happily ever after.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? What about a reading slump?
    • Like all writers, I’ve encountered my share of writer’s block. My solution: Chocolate! No joke, I eat chocolate. If I’m stuck on a certain section or not feeling motivated to write, I give myself little chocolate incentives to get past the blockage. Judging by my thighs, I had some serious problems writing this book. ;) I’m not sure I’ve ever been in a reading slump, though. If anything, I need to find ways to stop reading so much, as it sometimes affects time with my family or work.
  • What’s next for you?
    • Included in Clutch is a preview of my next book, Starfish, a new adult story of unexpected love, the redemptive power of music and hogging the bed. Starfish is expected to be released in spring 2019.

My review:
 My rating:  4 stars

Even though  I've had several of this author's books on my TBR list for quite a while, this is the first one I've read.  While this tour is all about the audiobooks, due to some issues with getting the audiobook, I wasn't able to listen, I only read the e-book.  So I'm unable to tell you how the audio is, but I can tell you that the book itself was a really good story.  It had sweet romance, very steamy sex scenes, and really complex characters and storyline.  Not only did I really like the main characters of the story, Alice and Nate, but you really get a good glimpse into their family members and friends.  Some of them you know have been the main romances in the earlier books, others you know will be in future stories.

While this is a series, each book is really a standalone, because I was able to read this without having to know what had happened in each of the other books.  I never feel that things are given away by couples already being together in later stories, because you have to know that in this kind of series, they are romances with happy endings, and somehow, someway, those couples would end up together.  Seeing them in these later books always makes me more eager to read the earlier ones so that I can read how their story unfolded and they fell in love.

I definitely recommend this series, this book, as well as probably all the others.  I'll have to go back and get to reading them soon!  I know I own at least one other if not two other books in the series.  If you like audiobooks, which I do, you'll probably want to check that version of these stories out.

Narrator: Jazmine Ramay

Series: Fortytude, Book One

Length: 6 hours 35 minutes

Publisher: Shelly Hickman

Released: July 2017

Genre: Romantic Comedy

Anna has never been the beautiful one; she’s always been the nice one. So when the gorgeous man sitting across the table at a wedding reception remembers her from high school—and quite fondly at that—she’s taken off guard. Formerly overweight and unpopular, Kiran has never forgotten Anna, the one person who was kind to him when no one else could be bothered, and Anna’s a bit flustered as she slowly comes to grips with his intense attraction for her. In what feels like a romantic dream come true, all-grown-up, hunky Kiran invites Anna on a trip to Varanasi. But her troubled, whack-a-do ex-boyfriend starts interfering, creating drama at every turn, which begs the question, “Can nice girls really finish first?”

Hello there! A little about me. A long-time Las Vegas native, I spend my days teaching computer technology to hormonal middle schoolers. I live with my husband of 20+ years and have a teenage daughter, grown son, and child of the furry persuasion. I'm a huge fan of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, as well as movies with stupid humor. Zoolander, Austin Powers, and Monty Python are some of my faves. And if you asked me where the best place in the world is, it would have to be Disneyland. I mean, it is the happiest place on Earth. I love to write about relationships, family as well as romantic, and my aim is to explore life's challenges with honesty and humor.

Q and A with Author Shelly Hickman
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing? Absolutely not, and neither was the possibility of the sequels which also came to pass. Any future works will now have that consideration. :)
  • How did you select your narrator? Through another author I follow, I learned that authors can connect with narrators through Amazon’s Audiobook Creation Exchange. I posted the book with a sample and opened it for auditions. Jazmine drew my attention because not only does she have a beautiful speaking voice, but her delivery is so natural, warm, and engaging.
  • How closely did you work with your narrator before and during the recording process? Did you give them any pronunciation tips or special insight into the characters? It really takes patience to be a narrator of someone else’s work, because it’s natural for the creator to have a special attachment to her characters. I was no different and when writing, we hear things a certain way in our heads. I did work very closely with Jazmine as she sent me the audio chapter by chapter. There were a few glitches along the way, and I know that she probably got a little frustrated with me, but she was the consummate professional when making adjustments per my request. I was kind of picky about how Kiran came across because he’s a complicated character, but I couldn’t be more pleased with her final portrayal of him.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I’ve just recently become an audiobook listener. As I’ve become older, I find that I have difficulty seeing a book through to its end, even when I like it. My attention is more easily scattered these days, and I have a hard time focusing. Over the past few years, I’ve gotten into the habit of reading more than one book at a time, but not finishing any of them. Audiobooks have made it a lot easier for me to finish a book I’ve started. I’ll play them on my phone while getting ready in the morning, or in my car while driving to work. I don’t always read humor but I definitely lean toward it, and when the narrator has great comedic timing, it makes the work that much more enjoyable.
I recently listened to God is Disappointed in You by Mark Russell and narrated by James Urbaniak. One of the places I listened was at the gym and the people around me must have thought me pretty amusing, because I would just smile and laugh while doing my workout. Audiobooks make the time fly, especially when you’re someone like me who hates going to the gym.
  • What do you say to those who view listening to audiobooks as “cheating” or “inferior to real reading”? There are pros and cons to listening to audiobooks. I would agree that books allow more flexibility for readers to see characters in their own minds. Some people don’t like characters painted by a narrator, and would rather choose how they see and hear them. If a narrator’s voice happens to be irritating to a listener, that alone could ruin an otherwise enjoyable story for the them. I get all of that. As a teacher, I also recognize that reading also helps us learn and recognize words that we may have been unfamiliar with. I will often look up words that I’ve come across while reading, and people are less likely to do that while listening to audio.
However, audiobooks make it so much easier for people to fit literature and non-fiction into their busy schedules. I recently listened to The Obesity Code by Jason Fung, and I can tell you if I tried to read that to completion, it wouldn’t have happened. As I said earlier, I just don’t have the attention span. As far as fiction goes, when you have a talented narrator such as Jazmine Ramay (smiles), the audio experience can make a story that much more enjoyable.
  • If this title were being made into a TV series or movie, who would you cast to play the primary roles? Sarah Jessica Parker would be perfect as Anna. She just has a down-to-earth, “you could tell her anything” persona that would suit the character well.
Hrithik Roshan is who I envision as Kiran. Honestly, I had no idea who he was before I started writing this book. I only discovered him when I searched for an Indian celebrity to model him after. Not only is he lovely to look at, in interviews he seems quite humble and gracious.
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams? No, but I would welcome Kiran any time he’d like to pay a visit. Heh heh.
  • How did you celebrate after finishing this novel? I had a launch party on Facebook which was a lot of fun. There were contests to see who could come up with the funniest captions for given images; giveaways of various items, such as old prints of Varanasi, etc. I had a great time and hope that the attendees did too.
  • What gets you out of a writing slump? A reading slump? I wish I knew the answer to the first question because I have been in a serious writing slump since I published my last book, Harmony to Heartburn. It just seems life has gotten in the way, and I prefer to start new projects at the beginning of my summer breaks from teaching. I think if I tried to start a book during the school year, the constant interruption to the writing would be discouraging and I would become resentful. Not that I’m able to complete a book in two and a half months, but summer breaks afford me a good chunk of time to get the ball rolling.
As far as reading slumps go, if I just start reading again that usually does the trick. Reading doesn’t require a certain frame of mind the same way writing does, so it’s much easier to pick it up again when the time and mood is right.
  • What’s next for you? I’m working to eventually have all five of my books available in audio. I’m currently working with Jo Mercer as she produces Somewhere Between Black and White, and Jazmine plans to begin narrating the sequel to Vegas to Varanasi, (Menopause to Matrimony), sometime in the near future. Her schedule is very busy, but I’m hoping we will have it available within the year.
I’m also working on narrating my first book, Believe. My voice doesn’t possess the lovely speaking qualities of Jo or Jazmine, but I’ve heard that readers enjoy listening to an author tell her own stories. Believe is a very personal story about the loss of my first child to leukemia, and I’m very close to having all of the audio ready to send to a sound engineer. I know nothing about making audio up to specs for Audible!
