Top 10 of 2019: Books I Wish I'd Made Time to Read in 2019

Top 10 of 2019 is hosted once again by Kimberly Faye Reads, and this year she has a co-host Ginger @greadsbooks.   The first topic of this is books I wish I'd made time to read in 2019.  And that was easier than some of the other topics, because I narrowed it down to just those published in 2019.  So here we go!

1.

So I read the first one, and then the one after, but I had so many other things booked when the second book came out, I was unable to fit it in. But I need to do that!

2.

I didn't get a physical ARC before it was published, but I did get one through books for trade on Twitter after, and I just need to fit it in!

3.

Another one that I didn't get a physical ARC, so didn't request the e-galley because I had so many other books already scheduled for reviews.

4.

Definitely need to read this one.  I bought it for my students, so when it's not checked out some time, I'll try to read it!

5.

Another one that I love the author, but didn't get a physical ARC until after it came out from books for trade.  Still need to fit it in!

6.

I think this one is similar to another Helena Hunting book that I didn't get to read right away, Good Luck Charm, but I do own this one, so hopefully in 2020!

7.

Another one I'd really hoped to get an ARC of, but didn't.  I again bought it for my school library and when the popularity dies down with students, I'll try to get it read!

8.

Now, I love every book by Maggie Stiefvater that I read, but often I do end up getting to them late.  And that's where I'm at once again.

9.

So I've only read one book by Ruta Sepetys, Between Shades of Gray, but I really had hoped to get the jump on this one.  We had an ARC at the bookstore where I work, but since it was a young adult book club pick, the person who runs those got it.  I hope to get to it soon!

10.

Okay, so, no, this didn't come out in 2019, but I had really hoped to get this second book in the Outlander series done and move on to the next.  But I didn't.  Here's to next year!

Tell me, did you read any of these this year?  Are any on your TBR?  What other books do you wish you'd made time to read?

If you're interested in joining in to the Top 10 of 2019, you can go to the links at the top for the hosting blogs.  Here are the other topics you'll see coming up:

And by the way, Merry Christmas!

Also, while you're here, make sure you go enter into my weekly Cleaning Up My TBR Giveaway HERE.  It's open till Friday night at midnight!

Cleaning Up My TBR With a Giveaway (US Only) - Down the TBR Hole #35

This meme was started by Lost in a Story.  Here is how it works:
  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?
Because I have so many to do, I'm going to try to do this weekly, and do 10 at a time.

1.   Plain Jane by Sonia Ashby:
How many times can a girl hear, I think you're cute, but let's just be friends? Guys either think Jane Harris is Plain Jane or cute, and she never knows if by cute they mean cute like your little sister is cute or something else. Once people take the time to get to know her, they find out there are many layers to her. Jane is sarcastic, spunky, and a little bit on the obsessive side. She also makes you wonder how one person's hard wiring can be so messed up when it comes to relationships.

My thoughts:
Cute cover, cute idea, but not that unique.

Verdict:  Toss

2.  Beauty by Lisa Daily:
What's it like to be the most beautiful girl in the world?

Molly desperately wants to be beautiful. And that's what she tells Dharma, the mysterious portrait artist who sketches her face at the town fair just minutes after she's humiliated in front of Hudson, the guy of her dreams. When Molly wakes up the following morning, she's the most beautiful girl in Miracle, Ohio. Babies coo in her arms, her house fills with flowers from dozens of drooling boys, and she's chosen to be a model for the hottest store in town. Best of all, Hudson finally falls for her.

But Molly soon discovers that beauty--and her wish--comes with a price. She's faced with an impossible choice: Will reclaiming her true identity mean letting go of Hudson for good?

My thoughts
Sounds a little different.  But don't know when I'd get to it.

Verdict:  Toss

3.  Zombies at the Door, Planning for the Inevitable by Charlie Pulsipher:
We all know it can happen, will happen. Be prepared and have a laugh at the same time. This basic manual will make sure you are ready to face the zombie hordes and walk you through where to meet, find weapons and food, and set up camp. It may even give you hope as you huddle in the bathroom stall at the mall. Seriously though, don't go to the mall! Learn the glow stick technique to distract zombies or how a paper bag might save your life or at least keep you from seeing the bitey end that's coming. Are dentist offices safe? Can the game of baseball stop the zombies from attacking? Is petroleum jelly something you should have in your zombie kit? Find out now.

My thoughts:
Okay, call me crazy, but this sounds kind of fun.

Verdict:  Keep

4.  Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter:
She won't rest until she's sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

If anyone had told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that's all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real.

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn't careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies.

My thoughts:
This is an author I really like.  And while this is a pretty popular series that I probably don't need to keep it on my list, I want to make sure I remember it.

Verdict:  Keep

5.   Hare Moon by Carrie Ryan:
Tabitha can’t shake the feeling that something exists beyond the fences of her village. And when she sneaks out, past the gates and down the path into the Forest of Hands and Teeth, she meets a boy who teaches her heart things she never knew. But love in a world surrounded by so much death doesn’t come without its sacrifices, and Tabitha gradually realizes just how much she’ll have to give up to live among the Unconsecrated.

My thoughts:
I love this series, and while I thought I'd read all the short stories, I'm not seeing this one as being read and can't decide if it sounds familiar or not, so I'll keep it so I don't forget.

Verdict: Keep

6.  Blood is Red by Scott Sigler:
A collection of eight horror stories created by New York Times best-selling novelist Scott Sigler, author of Infected, Contagious and Ancestor.

This eBook-only title features seven tales from Scott's six years of free audiobook podcasts, including the Parsec Award-winning "Red Man," plus the brand-new novella "Hunter Hunterson & Sons."

Scott still gives away his audio stories -- for free -- every week at scottsigler.com

My thoughts:
I know that I want to read all books by this author, so don't feel I need to keep this on my TBR.

Verdict: Toss

7.  Nocturnal by Scott Sigler:
NOCTURNAL is an epic story of mayhem set in the heart of San Francisco, where a group of people live in the city's unknown, underground ruins. They come out at night to prey on the "won't-bees," the dregs of society that won't be missed.

They've existed for hundreds of years, but are about to run headlong into Homicide detectives Bryan Clauser and Pookie Chang. It's a fight for existence as the police fight to stop a string of brutal, ritualistic occult murders.

NOCTURNAL is simultaneously a horror/thriller, a high-action comic book of a novel, and a throwback to classic 80s buddy-cop movies. If you're a child of the 80s, you'll love this one.

My thoughts:
Same reasoning as on the book above since this is the same author.

Verdict: Toss

 8.  Bones are White by Scott Sigler:
A collection of nine horror stories created by New York Times best-selling novelist Scott Sigler, author of NOCTURNAL, INFECTED, CONTAGIOUS and ANCESTOR.

This eBook- and audiobook-only collection brings you more of Scott's thought-provoking short stories from his five years of weekly storytelling, as well as a brand-new HUNTER HUNTERSON & SONS story and a brand-new KISSYMAN tale.

Scott still gives away his audio stories -- for free -- every week at scottsigler.com

Stories in BONES ARE WHITE:

• Passenger
• Bag Man
• Chuckles Mulrooney, Attorney for the Damned
• Hero
• Eusocial Networking
• You're A Damn Fool, Charlie Brown
• Kissyman & The Last Song
• Hunter Hunterson & Sons: Home
• Hunter Hunterson & Sons: The $15 Burger (manuscript)

My thoughts:
Same as the two above.

Verdict: Toss

9.  The Wolf's Moon by Patrick Jones:
In “The Wolf’s Moon”, author Patrick Jones creates a spellbinding tale of an ancient animal that haunts the foothill towns of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains. An unknown group of scientists has genetically engineered a Dire Wolf into the present day. Allegedly extinct, the ferocious beast preys upon the innocent people of Maple Hills.

To hunt and kill the beast, the town folk will have to rely on the tracking feats of Mark Lansdowne. He is a reluctant hero, still mourning the loss of his wife to illness. Relying on his rescue dogs and indefatigable hunting skills, Mark will set out on foot in search of the mysterious beast. Yet the hunter’s personal history and romantic entanglements will come back to haunt him during his search for the vicious animal.

Accompanying him on the hunt is his pal Warren Skruggs, who knew Mark when he was known as Michael Linden, a chapter of his history that he prefer be kept to the past. Adding to the intrigue are two beautiful, intelligent women who aid the hunter in his quest. Their looks and smarts would make the Bond Girls envious but Mark is still a grieving widower, unsure of how to move forward.

With its mixture of high-stakes hunting and personal and romantic intrigue, “The Wolf’s Moon” is a page-turner that will keep the reader captivated with its unexpected story twists. The thriller suspense novel is a real story grounded in the life and folkways of the Ozark Mountains not just another unbelievable werewolf story grafted onto the romance of the South.

My thoughts:
Hmm.  I feel like I want to read something by this author at some point. And it does take place in my home state of Missouri, so maybe it's worth keeping.

Verdict:  Keep

10.  Leopard Moon by Jeanette Battista:
How do you disappear when you come from a family of predators?

A wereleopard, Kess is forced to flee her home and family in Miami once her brother's obsession with her turns violent. She runs from city to city, trying to stay one step ahead of the investigators her family has dispatched to bring her home. Kess ends up in the mountains of North Carolina and attracts the attention of Cormac, a young man with a secret of his own. As she attempts to live as normal a life as her were-nature allows, her brother Sek continues to hunt for her. He believes she is the key to revitalizing their weakened clan and is driven to extreme measures to ensure their continued existence. As Kess' relationship with Cormac deepens, Sek closes in, threatening Cormac's life and Kess' freedom.

When the moon rises, the hunt is on….

My thoughts:
Not really my kind of read anymore.

Verdict: Toss

Final Thoughts:

Lisa's Looking Foward To #19 - June 25th, 2019

Back to joining up with the Waiting on Wednesday Posts, and the Can't Wait Wednesday posts hosted by Wishful Endings.  This week there are four on my list.

From my ARC list for June 25th:

I won an ARC of this through Bookish First, and plan/hope to get it read and do a review by this Sunday.  The first look that they gave me on the website definitely intrigued me, and I'm interested to see where the story goes.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

A novel about speaking out, standing up, and breaking free.

Miriam lives in New Jerusalem, a haven in the desert far away from the sins and depravity of the outside world. Within the gates of New Jerusalem, and under the eye of its founder and leader, Daniel, Miriam knows she is safe. Cared for. Even if she’s forced, as a girl, to quiet her tongue when she has thoughts she wants to share, Miriam knows that New Jerusalem is a far better life than any alternative. So when God calls for a Matrimony, she’s thrilled; she knows that Caleb, the boy she loves, will choose her to be his wife and they can finally start their life together.

But when the ceremony goes wrong and Miriam winds up with someone else, she can no longer keep quiet. For the first time, Miriam begins to question not only the rules that Daniel has set in place, but also what it is she believes in, and where she truly belongs.

Alongside unexpected allies, Miriam fights to learn–and challenge–the truth behind the only way of life she’s ever known, even if it means straying from the path of Righteousness.

I love retelling types of stories, and Gena Showalter is a favorite author of mine.  I would have killed for this ARC!  I did get an egalley, so hope to have time to read still.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Welcome to the Forest of Good and Evil. A dream come true, and a living nightmare.

Evil isn’t born, it’s made. One thought and action at a time. Take a good look at what you’ve made.

Far, far away, in the realm of Enchantia, creatures of legend still exist, magic is the norm and fairy tales are real. Except, fairy tales aren’t based on myths and legends of the past—they are prophecies of the future.

Raised in the mortal realm, Everly Morrow has no idea she’s a real life fairy tale princess—until she manifests an ability to commune with mirrors.

Look. See… What will one peek hurt?

Soon, a horrifying truth is revealed. She is fated to be Snow White’s greatest enemy, the Evil Queen.

With powers beyond her imagination or control—and determined to change Fate itself—Everly returns to the land of her birth. There, she meets Roth Charmaine, the supposed Prince Charming. Their attraction is undeniable, but their relationship is doomed.

As bits and pieces of the prophecy unfold, Everly faces one betrayal after another, and giving in to her dark side proves more tempting every day. Can she resist, or will she become the queen—and villain—she was born to be?

This one just sounds very unique and I'm so interested in things that are different, with different types of fantasy stories and creatures.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

A fresh and addictive fantasy-romance set in modern-day Seoul.

Eighteen-year-old Gu Miyoung has a secret--she's a gumiho, a nine-tailed fox who must devour the energy of men in order to survive. Because so few believe in the old tales anymore, and with so many evil men no one will miss, the modern city of Seoul is the perfect place to hide and hunt.

But after feeding one full moon, Miyoung crosses paths with Jihoon, a human boy, being attacked by a goblin deep in the forest. Against her better judgment, she violates the rules of survival to rescue the boy, losing her fox bead--her gumiho soul--in the process.

Jihoon knows Miyoung is more than just a beautiful girl--he saw her nine tails the night she saved his life. His grandmother used to tell him stories of the gumiho, of their power and the danger they pose to humans. He's drawn to her anyway.

With murderous forces lurking in the background, Miyoung and Jihoon develop a tenuous friendship that blossoms into something more. But when a young shaman tries to reunite Miyoung with her bead, the consequences are disastrous . . . forcing Miyoung to choose between her immortal life and Jihoon's.

I added this one because it sounds like one I would get for my school library, although I don't know now if I'd ever get around to reading it myself.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

Their worlds are about to come crashing down...

At sixteen years old, Harper Lyon's life is spinning out of control. She threatens her parents with suicide unless she can meet her drug-dealing boyfriend, a college student who doesn't know she's pregnant. Cooper Lyons, her estranged grandfather, lives in rural Alaska with only his dog and cat for company. He has just been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's, and he doesn't plan on letting the disease run its course. Harper needs to escape her parents and decide what to do about the baby. She and her grandpa are worlds apart, but they may be exactly what the other needs. When Harper calls her grandfather, he welcomes the opportunity to help her and redeem his previous failure with his daughter Heather, who died from a drug overdose years ago.

Can they save each other?

The US only giveaway is open till Friday at midnight, and this week I added some 2019 ARCs that can be one of your two choices.

"Utterly unique and absolutely riveting—I couldn’t put it down! What a marvelously cool world." —Sarah J. Maas, New York Times bestselling author, on Firstlife

EXCERPT:

The identity of our intruders clicks. Two Troikan Generals: Shamus Campbell and Luciana Rossi. Behind them, four Laborers I’ve never met. A total of six invaders.

6: symbolizes beauty and high ideals. The sixth sense: ESP. The sixth astrological sign in the Zodiac: Virgo.

Focus! A soft pitter-patter of footfalls echoes outside the cave. More TLs?

Killian isn’t safe.

Panic claws its way up the ridges of my spine, and my blood f lash-freezes. I strain with all my might, desperate to move, but my body refuses to cooperate. Every attempt to raise my arms threatens to pop my shoulders out of joint. I don’t care. Nothing will halt my efforts.

“Kill, kill.” Between each command—desire?—Killian snarls like a wounded animal. “Kill!”

Shamus, a big, barrel-chested redhead with pale skin and countless freckles, slams a fist against his armor-clad chest to gain my attention. His dark eyes are narrowed, a muscle jumping in his jaw. “What did you do, Miss Lockwood? And do no’ tell me nothin’.” His accent is similar to Killian’s.

Luciana, a slender brunette with lovely brown skin and startling gray irises, backs away from me, horror contorting her expression. “I’ll tell you what she did. She doomed us all.”

Doomed…

Is she right? She can’t be. She just can’t.

I look down at Killian. My new husband is pulling at hanks of his hair.

Hopes, falling from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

“Out,” Shamus snarls at the TLs. “Now.”

All four soldiers rush from the cave without protest.

I stiffen. The General has evened the odds. Two against two. A foolish move for a war-seasoned veteran. Unless he got rid of any witnesses…

Willing to use my body as a shield, I push through the pain—snap. My shoulder does pop out of joint. Or maybe back into joint. Air wheezes from my lungs. Worth it! Finally, I can move. I crawl toward Killian, every inch I gain only adding fuel to an already blazing fire of agony.

Can’t stop. No, won’t stop. Determination drives me. I only wish it gave me wings.

“Kill. Must kill.” Killian is lost in a world of his own.

“You won’t be killing anyone, you son of a Myriad troll.” With a hand curled around the hilt of a sword, Shamus stalks toward him.

“Stop! He doesn’t know what he’s saying right now.” My voice is barely audible, my gaze locked on my love. So close, yet so far away. Desperation slams a spike straight through my heart.

Any other day, I would have used the comm built into the forearm of spirit and Shell. With the press of a few buttons, it could transport me to Killian’s side and, as long as some part of me is touching some part of him, whisk us both somewhere else. Somewhere safe. Like a fool, I disabled the device to hide from fellow Troikans while meeting with Killian.

I should have known they’d find me one way or another.

“Stop,” I repeat, even as I gain another inch. “That’s an order.” As a Conduit, I outrank the Generals. As a newbie to the Everlife, however, my exalted rank doesn’t really mean squat.

“We can’t hurt him,” Luciana grates. She extends her arm, stopping Shamus in his tracks. “You’ve effectively tied our hands, Miss Lockwood.”

Though the shadows are no longer slithering through my mind, I’m not exactly thinking straight. I struggle to make sense of her words, finally throw in the towel. “I don’t understand.”

“You bonded to him, did you not?” She spits the words, as if they taste foul in her mouth. “That bond forces us to spare Myriad’s favorite butcher and watch as you, one of only two Conduits, slowly descends into madness.”

My Review:
My rating: 5 stars

This was the perfect conclusion to an epic trilogy.  Each book has totally blown me away, and this one was no different!  I got started a little late, due to some issues I had with downloading the e-galley, but once I did, I was hooked.  It started off with some of the familiar memos between people that we've seen throughout the other books.  And then we were pretty much where book 2 left off, Ten and Killian choosing to pledge their lives to each other, to form a bond that would hopefully be the first step towards peace between Myriad and Troika.

If you've followed my reviews of the two books so far, especially the 2nd one, you'll know that I adored Killian, and the beginning with him and Ten had me right back in love.  Until they bond and everything changes.  Killian and Ten are affected immediately.  Ten now has to deal with the shadows that come through their bond, the shadows that threaten her light and her Troikian way of thinking and doing.  But really Killian is the one who gets the short end of the deal.  He doesn't remember anything about their relationship.  In fact, the first thing he wants to do right after is kill her.  His memories are gone, at least all that pertain to falling in love with Ten and their plan to save both of their worlds.

So, while they must fight now against their own sides who are either not happy with the bond, or want to use it to destroy the other realm, what I loved best about the story is that we get to see Killian fall in love with Ten all over again.  Seeing him work through his hatred for all things Troikian, as well as overcoming the many, many betrayals he's suffered throughout his First and Second Lives.  Finding that love overcomes all, that's something Killian must discover and accept, and something that Ten must fight to continue to believe, even over all of the shadows that overtake her, and the bad things that happen to her.

I want so badly to write a beautiful review for this beautiful book. But alas, I didn't finish reading until about 3 am this morning, and my review needed to be posted before noon today.  Without getting too spoilery, I will say that the way things worked out, the solution to it all, reminded me quite a bit of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, which was a book I loved and read over and over when I was a kid.

Oh, not only did I love Killian, as expected, but Biscuit!  And Beast!  You'll have to read to find out who they are.  And then, we get back a beloved character from before that we thought was gone, and that was so wonderful as well.  I enjoyed all of Ten's numbers and her poems as usual.  One other fun fact, is that Ten mentions a quote from one of my other favorite series, The Arcana Chronicles by Kresley Cole.  I really just fangirl  myself when it seems an author is giving shout outs to other authors and their awesome books.  Also, we get a tour of Myriad in this book, making me realize we didn't ever know exactly what it was like, and wow, it was so bizarre!

I guess to wrap this all up, if you haven't started this series, go get it now!  If you are ready for this book, get your hands on it as soon as you can, to find out how things will go down, and immerse yourself in the beautiful worlds Showalter has created.

Can't Wait Wednesday #34: Everlife (Everlife series #3) by Gena Showalter

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they're books that have yet to be released. It's based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine.  This week I've chosen the final book in a trilogy that I've really enjoyed so far.  I'm guessing that as usual, there will probably not be a physical ARC of this final book, so I will not have a matching set.  Oh well.  That seems to be the life of a book blogger, right?  Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

STAND TOGETHER OR FALL ALONE.

THE FATE OF THE EVERLIFE HANGS IN THE BALANCE.

At seventeen years old, Tenley “Ten” Lockwood had to make the ultimate choice—where to live after she died. Loyalty to her selected realm has not wavered…until now. The numbers-obsessed Conduit is out of time. Sacrifices must be made, and a terrible price must be paid. But is she too late?

As the Everlife descends into darkness, a single truth becomes clear: Troika and Myriad must unite at long last—or perish. In order to bring sworn enemies together, Ten must enter forbidden territory…and destroy the powerful Prince of Ravens. But there’s only one way inside—bonding with Killian Flynn, a deadly rival Laborer who sets her blood aflame.

When nothing goes as planned and betrayal leads to the edge of utter defeat, Ten and Killian will have to rebuild trust from the ashes of their hearts. Victory seems impossible; the odds stacked against them. In the end, how far will they be willing to go for the sake of their realms and the Everlife?
