I’m never coming back here.

“Well, thanks for taking everything.” I wipe my hands on my skirt and try to put them in the dress’s pockets, only remembering too late this dress doesn’t have them.

What a waste of a nice blue floral summer dress. Every dress should have pockets. So should cardigans. This is why I buy mine in the men’s section of thrift stores. Old man cardigans always have pockets for candy or rubber bands, or whatever old men need to carry in their sweater pockets. My own grandfather put butterscotch and star mints in his. At his funeral a few years ago, I snuck a couple pieces of each into his casket.

Full of rejects from the garage sale, the big truck drives away. I stand alone in the driveway. The desire to wave good-bye hits me in the center of my chest, and I realize it’s not the stuff I’m going to miss, it’s my life.

Behind me, my grandparents’ house, the only home I’ve ever known, is an empty shell. Shadows of old frames and mirrors fill the walls, revealing the true colors of the Laura Ashley floral wallpaper my grandmother installed in the eighties. Sunlight faded carpet darkens where the sofa and Grandpa’s favorite recliner once sat. My entire life has been spent in this faded upstate town, long past its prime. Whatever good or interesting that could happen here, already has. Tethered here by my family and small town expectations, I’ve tried to make the most of growing up in a place where success is an echo and hope is a memory.

Now there’s no reason to stay.

Did he ever think of our night together in the tent?

I did.

Without a doubt, I’d been tipsy, but I remembered everything. For so many years there was tension between us. It started as annoyance, my best friend’s older brother who always acted like a douche. Then, after he joined the Army and came back to visit, it was like he’d matured just enough to lose that obnoxious edge and I realized for the first time how sexy he was. I wanted him. Back then, pursuing guys had been my vice, but I knew Amber might be weirded out by it.

When I thought back to that night at the nature reserve…it was really our last night of true freedom and happiness. It’s strange to think we were happy, especially since our parents had been taken prisoners at that point, and we’d watched his grandfather be killed, but we still had hope. We thought we’d get our parents back. We didn’t have any idea just how horrible things were. Or that aliens were real.

I rubbed the prickly hairs on my arms down and took another bite. I didn’t want to think about that night in the tent. The sound of Tater’s laughter. His wide smile. The way the neck of my loose shirt had slid down while I was arranging my sleeping bag and laughing drunkenly. His warm mouth as he kissed me on my exposed shoulder…when I turned to him, Tater had never looked more serious. “Are there cameras in the room where you teach?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” I whispered.

“How can you not know?” she asked, annoyed. “Look today.”

“Okay, but there’s no way I can take anything. I’m never alone.”

“The guards cannot be staring at you the entire time.” Linette nodded to the bag at my side. “Slip it in there.”

“Remy,” Tater said to his bowl. “If you can get your hands on anything electronic, we can try to use it at night to send or receive signals, and you can return it in the morning.”

My stomach was roiling at the idea. There’s a reason I didn’t join the military. Stealth and danger were not my things. But I was the only one with access to the palace.

“I’ll look,” I promised.

“Have you been alone with him yet?” Linette asked.

My innards seized at this, churning my breakfast. I felt both of their eyes on me as I stared at the pasty contents in my bowl and minutely shook my head.

“Make it happen,” she demanded.

From the corner of my eye it looked like Tater was holding his spoon so hard he might bend it in his fist. I reached out with my leg as far as I could under the table until my foot touched his. The contact, even through our shoes, sent blood whooshing to every nerve in my body. I watched as his hand relaxed on the spoon, and he pressed his foot to mine. Our eyes never met.

We were quiet as we finished.

“Did Remy tell you her fantastically stupid idea to try and teach the girls in our room after hours?”

Tater’s eyes flew up to me, scorching me, and I looked at the guard again. When I found one of them staring straight at me, my demeanor changed to demure and I gave the guard a soft smile before looking back down. Three Reviews: Unknown Trilogy by Wendy Higgins

I had purchased the first book in the trilogy, Unknown, last March when I got to meet the author at Apollycon.  I hadn't had a chance to read it, but then I heard of the tour for the final book in the series, and so I signed up to read them and review.  I was fortunate enough to get copies of the second book, Unrest, and this third and final one, Undone, to review for the tour.  The first two books took me about 3 or 4 days to read each. But the final one, well besides that I was down to only two days till I had to review it, it was so good I could barely put it down to go back to work from my breaks, or go to bed.  Obviously if you haven't read any of them, you'll want to probably stop with my review of book one below, and not go on to the second or third book reviews, as they will have spoilers for each of the book before them, I don't know how to do much of a review without it.  Let me just say that I ended up loving this series, and while I only own a physical copy of the first one, I will be purchasing physical copies of the final two in the trilogy, in hopes of getting to meet the author again and get them signed as well.

My review:
I picked this one up to read right before bed one night, and told myself I would just read chapter. Well, that didn't last as I could barely put it down!  The character, Amber, was just so relatable and interesting, that I was drawn in and had to know how things would go. And then there was Rylen.  It was a total brother's best friend romance, but then again it wasn't.  When Rylen went away to war, he came back and it was as if he'd  never known how she felt about him. Even all the moments when it seemed like maybe he felt the same, or she even basically came out and told him in one of her emails.  So when he comes back at a point in the war that means everyone ends up back home, when things get really bad all over the world, what has happened to him keeps them apart, and I know I was crying so much, as if it had happened to my best friend, or even myself.  I loved Rylen, and I just knew that he was supposed to be with Amber, in spite of what happened.  There came a time when the back story to the little issue was revealed, and then I knew it was what I had suspected caused that issue in the first place. And I felt a little better and could go on reading, not quite as heartbroken as before.

The tragedy that happens to all of their family is really insane, and what it does to all of them definitely keeps you on the edge of your seat.  I liked the little dalliance between Amber's best friend Remy and Amber's brother, Tater.  It was a humorous scene, even surrounded by all that happened to them before.  It was a little frustrating that Rylen and Amber could not overcome it all to take that moment to finally figure out what was between them as well.  In the end I was so glad I had book two to go on and find out what happened next.

My review:
We got a lot of great new characters, both from the end of the last book, as well as at the base where they ended up in this book.  There was a point when I was practically shouting at Amber and Rylen to figure their stuff out and get together.  I hated the character Linette, even though in the end, she may have done a good thing, in finally helping Amber make her move.  When the two of them finally figure it out, it is perfect though.  I really liked the base that they lived at, the underground part, as well as how they tunneled through to a nearby hotel so that they all had pretty comfortable living quarters to start with.  Finding out just what the aliens had done to the girls and other people with the shots and other things they'd done was heartbreaking in this story, but also helped make things easier for other things to take place.  

Of course we had to lose characters, it wouldn't be realistic if not, I'm glad that for the most part, our main characters stayed alive. Even if Tater was just so out of it, not being able to overcome what had happened to his family, and almost to Amber at one point in their journey.  Then there was the discovery of one of the humans that had worked for the aliens, and I knew exactly what he was going to end up with as a secret that would hurt our main characters.  The plan they set up was great, and leaving to go to the next part of the plan worked out, other than when we lost a couple of the characters, two of our very important ones in fact.  Once again, when I finished, I was so glad I had book three, so that I could jump right in and see what happened to those three who'd been left behind unfortunately when the base got attacked by the aliens.

My review:
I feel like it has been a while since I have marked every book in a series as 5 stars, but this trilogy really earned all of those stars for me.  This final book goes back and froth between two viewpoints, Amber as in the first two, and then Remy, her best friend.  Since Remy and Tater and Linette were all captured by the aliens at the end of book two, we had to follow them to find out how they would survive all of this. And in a way, their story was often the one that kept me going, quickly reading through Amber's parts to get back to them.  Mainly because Remy was set up in a way that she had to deal with the leader of the aliens, the man who also happened to be the Senator that everyone respected and looked up to so much in the first book.  It turned out he was one of the aliens.  But he had been with the humans his whole life basically, and felt a connection with Remy. She was able to use that connection to try to find things out to help her friends.  In this story we had the other crew, Amber and Rylen and the others from the military base in Alaska now, that were doing their best to plan a way to take the aliens down, before more came from their home planet.  We find out there are pockets of human resistance all over the world, and they learn to communicate with very old technology, keeping the aliens, for the most part from figuring out or noticing.  

Again we have injuries, and a couple deaths.  The romance between Rylen and Amber finally gets to take place, even as they have to move to the base in Alaska where they are no longer staying in a hotel room, but sharing huge rooms with lots of other members of the same sex.  A base where there is a closet people meet in for their rendezvous.   It is definitely a part that adds some lightness and humor to the darkness they all live in.  Not to mention the run in with a bear, the tall guy being afraid of heights, and more.  Remy gets a chance to be a teacher, like she'd wanted before all of this happened, although not in the way she'd thought. But by her closeness to their leader, she also began to empathize and feel a little more than just the hatred for them that the rest of the humans felt.  Amber gets to continue working on her medical skills, as she has all through the whole series.  

The ending was great.  I liked that we could have such a happy ending, and have the main characters survive.  While maybe that is not realistic, I'm reading a fictional story, I'm okay with a happy ending, or happier ending I should say.

If I can find a way to get these books for my school library, I will definitely do it, as I think my students would enjoy this series as much as I did.

Three End of Series Mini-Reviews

As I keep mentioning, I'm so far behind on reviews!  So, to speed things up, you should continue to expect mini-reviews like what I'm posting today.  I finished up three series finally over the past two months, so let's do a quick reflection on them, and then the blurb from Goodreads. 

Ashes (Seeds of America #3) by Laurie Halse Anderson:

My rating:  5 stars
Okay, this series will go down as being one of my all-time favorite YA historical fictions stories.  It's not really a romance in any way, although there is what needs to be in there in a way.  It's really all about the time and the people of the time and the history, and the side of the history that isn't talked about that much, or written about in history textbooks.  With the huge popularity of the musical Hamilton, this is a series that is perfect for young adults and teens to read that fills in even more blanks and will make them think and ask their own questions about our country's past.  You can read my reviews of the first two books here, Chains and Forge.  And below is the blurb from Goodreads for this third book:

Sentinel (Covenant #5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout:

My rating:  4 stars
I usually give all of JLA's books 5 stars.  I mean I just love her characters. But this book, and the last one in the series, Apollyon, weren't as great for me.  I think it might be because of the absence of Seth.  While yes, I think that Alex probably belonged with Aiden, it reminds me a bit of the Twilight movies, where I was good with Edward for Bella, but I wanted Jacob.  Here, I loved Seth, and kinda wanted more of him.  He does show back up in this book, and I know that there is a spin-off series for Seth that I will be picking up soon.  Other than that, I really like the way the whole ending went down, the battle was good, the way Armentrout "saved the day" in the end was perfect.  There were definitely some sad losses again in this book of people that we'd grown to  like and care about.  But in a huge battle like this, unfortunately that is to be expected.  You can read my reviews to the other books in the series by clicking on the link earlier in this paragraph, or one of these:   Half-Blood, Pure,  or Deity.  Here is the blurb for this final book from Goodreads:

While it took me a minute to pick this one back up and finally read it, when I did, I was once again blown away and hooked so that I couldn't put it down.  While I had issues with some characters that did irritate me a bit, I know that what they did is something that is always in stories, adds to the drama, even though I'm pretty sure it probably wouldn't really happen that way in real life.  I guess I forgot the fact that I'm a bit of a science nerd, because when the characters didn't know what SETI was, I was shocked that anyone didn't know.  In case you don't know, SETI stands for the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Life.  I have to say that once again, this author did a great job of ending this story in a pretty believable way.  We were able to have a pretty much HEA, but it wasn't without losses and it wasn't done in a way that was just everyone decided at the last minute to "all just get along".  There was one person's change of heart that I loved, even as it led her to do something that was definitely heartbreaking for herself.  You can read my reviews of the first two books in the series here:  The Taking, and The Replaced.  Here is the blurb from Goodreads for this final book in the series:

So those are the first three series-enders that I've read this year.  All three were well done and great ways to end a series.  If you haven't started them yet, I highly recommend them all!
