Blog Tour Review with Giveaway: Beard Necessities (Winston Brothers #7) by Penny Reid

BANNER_BN_BT.jpg

Billy Winston’s family is going to see him happy and in love if it’s the last thing they do.

Beard Necessities, the final standalone in the bestselling romantic comedy Winston Brothers series from New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Penny Reid, is available now!

Book info:
Title:  Beard Necessities
Author:   Penny Reid
Series:  Winston Brothers #7
Genre: Adult romantic comedy
Release Date:  November 4th, 2019
Publisher: Cipher-Naught

Source: E-galley from Social Butterfly PR which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  4 stars

Synopsis:
No one deserves a happily-ever-after quite as much as the second oldest Winston brother and his lady love, Claire McClure (aka Scarlet St. Claire). Cruelty and circumstance tore them apart almost twenty years ago. Secrecy and bitterness kept them separated.

But you know who's tired of their separation and stubbornness? Everyone. Especially Billy Winston’s family. And now they're going to do something about it.

Well-meaning interference means the star-crossed lovers can’t stop tripping over each other in the hills of Tuscany, the catacombs of Rome, and the waterways of Venice. Billy and Claire find themselves thrown together and at the mercy of the Winston siblings’ shenanigans.

But will their forced proximity bring them together? Or push them even further apart?

This second-chance romance brings back the entire Winston gang, playing cupid in one last story of love, hi-jinks, and family collusion.

BEARD NECESSITIES is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, and can be read as a stand-alone, but it’s probably best read after books 0.5, 2, 3, 5, and 6 of the Winston Brothers series.

My Review:
Ever since I read Beard With Me, I've been on the edge of my seat anxious for how this next book, the final part of Billy and Scarlet's story, would go.  Overall I did really like seeing Billy and Scarlet finally get together.  I loved seeing all our favorite couples from the past books in this series so often and in so much of the story. Especially all the Cletus we got!  It was definitely good the way that each of them realized the issues the other had and called them out about it.  I like that once they'd gotten all the secrets out, or most of them, they then were pretty quick to finish sharing them, or not to make something into another of those secrets that characters always keep to "protect" the other one.  Definitely the book was a page-turner for me.

Now, my problems with the book.  The first part to this story, Beard With Me, was such a majorly emotional and epic story, that this one just seemed really simple and not as complex.  I didn't cry like I did with the first one, or with other books in the series.  I honestly got a little irritated with all the back and forth between the two as well. Although I was glad that Scarlet would not give up after the first give in between the two, even when Billy clammed up or seemed to push her away.  And even though we have known several things throughout the other characters' books in the series, I feel like I needed so much more of the time we missed between the first book and this book.  I need more time with Scarlet and Ben, to know how things really were.  I need to know more about Billy and Scarlet's rendezvous at the hotel.  I guess we don't need all that, it's not really the type of story we get from this author.  It's just like how I kind of think at times I'd like to have an origin story for Bethany and Darrell Winston, but then really, since he was who he was, that wouldn't be a good HEA kind of story.  So my rating isn't a 5, because it wasn't perfect.  Also something I mentioned on the Facebook group recently, I'd love to see a "bible" for the Green Valley series, and know all the characters we've met and who they're related to, etc.  Especially once we got all the couples' kids involved.  It reminded me so much of my dad's side of my family.  He was one of 5 siblings, and his oldest brother had 5 kids, and all their kids, and at parties for the longest time, I had trouble keeping straight which one belonged to which of my cousins.

It seems as if I had a lot of problems, but overall, as I said in the first paragraph above, it was a good ending.  Sexy scenes were just as good as ever, and all the characters were the characters I loved from their own stories earlier in the series.  I hate that this is the end of the Winston Brothers series, but am so happy for the whole SmartyPants Romance series that will give me glimpses into my favorite world of characters as well as the new Cletus and Jenn mystery series coming next year!  I also have a new idea, or a way to take a story idea I had last year and maybe change it to something that I could try to get into the world myself!

And I have to add this, every time I would think or read the name of this book, my brain immediately began singing the "Bare Necessities" song from the Jungle Book original movie.

TEASER01.jpg

Excerpt

Strolling to the desk, I set down the milk and cookies, crossed my arms and turned to face my brother. “You’re pointing out that Scarlet and I will see each other during various family functions.”

“Correct.”

“And, therefore,” I continued reasonably, “I need to be nice to her.” I knew that already, and tonight—after watching her face crumple and feeling a part of my soul shrivel at the sight—I’d finally accepted it. I would be nice. I would be so damn nice. I’d be a saint.

But then Cletus said, “No, Billy. Not nice. Nice is for tea parties and doctor’s visits. You need to woo her.”

I blinked once. “Woo her.”

“That’s right. You need to woo the pants off her, hopefully literally, and then make that woman yours. Permanently. Once and for all. Put a ring on it. Woo is where it’s at. Jenn still has the centerpieces from our wedding if you’d like to borrow them.” During this enlightening monologue, he’d moseyed over and picked up the glass of milk and a cookie, dunked the cookie into the milk, and then took a bite just as he’d finished his listings of delusions.

“That’s never going to happen.”

“Why not? Those centerpieces are lovely. You don’t know your color scheme yet. Ask Scarlet before you decide.”

I ground my teeth. “Scarlet and I are never going to happen, Cletus.”

He shook his head firmly. “I’m disappointed in your lack of ambition, Billy. I thought we’d be on the same page. But I see now, I’m going to have to take a tough love approach.”

“Cletus—”

“I’m going to give you one chance,” he said, then pushed the rest of the cookie in his mouth and spoke around it as he continued, “One more chance is all you get. I’ve waited long enough for this and you know my feelings on delayed gratification.”

“Pardon?”

“It’s overrated.” He took a gulp of milk and picked up another cookie.

“No, Cletus. One chance on what?”

“I’m giving you one chance. One.” He pointed the cookie at me. “Tomorrow, you’re going to go find her, apologize to her for whatever that kerflufflefuck was I walked in on. Tell her you were suffering from temporary insanity, hopped up on illicit drugs, abducted by asshole probing aliens, whatever. I’m giving you one chance to make this right, and if you don’t take it, you are not going to like what happens next.”

20190718_DB01_Baking Me Crazy_Sorensen_KDP_FINAL

I'm Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family's curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like well-armed soldier. She's the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I've ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can't.

Because when we met, she didn't need true love. She needed a best friend. And that's what I've been to her... for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can't get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

'Baking Me Crazy' is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#1 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). "I LOVED both Cosy and Griffin! This story was ABSOLUTE PERFECTION!"- Kendall Ryan, New York Times bestselling author

Making Up, an all-new laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting is available now!

Book info:
Title: Making Up
Author:  Helena Hunting
Series:  Shacking Up #4
Genre:  Adult romantic comedy
Release Date:  July 16th, 2019
Publisher:  St. Martin's Press

My rating:   5 stars

Synopsis:
Cosy Felton is great at her job—she knows just how to handle the awkwardness that comes with working at an adult toy store. So when the hottest guy she’s ever seen walks into the shop looking completely overwhelmed, she’s more than happy to turn on the charm and help him purchase all of the items on his list.

Griffin Mills is using his business trip in Las Vegas as a chance to escape the broken pieces of his life in New York City. The last thing he wants is to be put in charge of buying gag gifts for his friend’s bachelor party. Despite being totally out of his element, and mortified by the whole experience, Griffin is pleasantly surprised when he finds himself attracted to the sales girl that helped him.

As skeptical as Cosy may be of Griffin’s motivations, there’s something about him that intrigues her. But sometimes what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas and when real life gets in the way, all bets are off. Filled with hilariously awkward situations and enough sexual chemistry to power Sin City, Making Up is the next standalone in the Shacking Up world.

My Review:
This book had me rolling from the first page!  It had a lot of ups and downs, sexy scenes and sweet scenes as well.  If you know me,  you know I am normally not a fan of the older man stories.  I personally prefer a younger man myself, so a lot of times I just can't enjoy the opposite.  However, when it is Helena Hunting, she can pretty much write any story and it seems I will be sucked in and love it.  There were so many issues that Cosy and Griffin had to overcome, some having to do with that very age difference, but then others having to do with Griffin's past dalliances, and even Cosy's own sister threw a wrench into their relationship!  But I like the way all of the obstacles were handled, realistically in my opinion, but with enough drama and even romance to make it worth reading.  I've only read one other in this series, but I seriously need to go back and read all the rest!

MAKING UP TEASER NINE AN.jpg

Excerpt:

We’re a couple of minutes away from my apartment, which also means we’re almost at the end of our date. End-of-date protocol often means a goodnight kiss.

And I’ve eaten onions. Lots of them. What the hell was I thinking? I feel around in my shorts pocket, hoping I have a random stick of gum. I find a tiny square packet and pull it out, along with an old tissue. I shove that back in my pocket and sigh with relief as I carefully open the Listerine Pocketpak. There’s one strip left. I pop it in my mouth, wishing I had water since my mouth is dry and I’m suddenly super nervous.

Griffin pulls up in front of my apartment building. I swallow a bunch of times, trying to get the strip to dissolve on my tongue and glance out the tinted window, seeing it from his perspective. I don’t live in a bad part of town, but I sure as hell wouldn’t leave this car sitting out here for any length of time unless I wanted it keyed or stripped down.

Griffin shifts into park and turns to me, one hand resting on the back of my seat near the headrest. “I had a great time, Cosy.”

“Me too, thanks for dinner.” I tried to fork over my share, but he was quick on the credit card draw.

“It was my pleasure.” He leans in the tiniest bit, a nonverbal cue that he’s going in for a kiss.

I mirror the movement, giving him the go ahead. My stomach flutters in anticipation. I exhale slowly through my nose. Even though the Listerine strip should be doing its job to mask the onions, I don’t want to ruin the moment by breathing that in his face.

His fingertips skim my jaw, and I close my eyes. And then his lips brush my cheek. I wait for them to move a couple of inches to the right, but after what feels like a lot of seconds—and is probably only a few—I crack a lid.

Griffin is still close, a wry smile on his lips and a smolder in his eyes.

“Seriously, that’s it? A kiss on the cheek?”

His smile widens, making his eyes crinkle at the corners. He’s nothing like the guys I usually end up on dates with. College boys don’t take things slow. If I were out with one of the guys from school, I’d be sitting in a beat-up Civic with some stupid music playing, and he’d be all over me with his tongue halfway down my throat, copping a feel.

“I thought all the onions you ate were the equivalent to garlic for vampires.” Griffin fingers my hair near my shoulder. I’d really like him to finger something else. Wait. I mean I’d like to feel his hands on me. Not in my pants. Okay, maybe I’d like them in my pants, but not after date number one.

“I wasn’t thinking, and I really like onions. A lot. In hindsight, it’s not a great date food. I feel kinda dumb. And I guess at first I wasn’t so sure about you. How was I supposed to know you’d actually be kind of normalish?”

“Normalish?”

“Well, you drink club soda on purpose, so you can’t be all there.” I tap his temple.

Griffin circles my wrist with his fingers and drops his head, lips brushing over my knuckle. “We can’t all be perfect, now, can we?”

“I suppose not, and perfect is boring.”

“That it is.” He hums against my skin, and I feel it through my entire body. “I would like to try that kiss again, if you’re still interested.”

My Review:
I've been eager to read another Rich Amooi book since the first one I read last year that I loved.  This one was a very sweet and quick read.  While I normally prefer books about younger heroines, in this case, when I'm about 3 years from being 50 years old myself, I kind of felt like it gave me a bit of hope for my own romantic, or lack of a romantic life.  There were a lot of different things going on in this story, but how everyone handled their issues, mostly, seemed really realistic to me.  We still had the one issue that you've probably seen me complain about numerous romance books, that if they'd just tell the other one the secret they were keeping, they'd probably have been able to solve things a lot quicker.  I had a feeling the way a certain perfect ending happened might be what happened early on in the story. But the author kept it as not a big part of the story, in fact, I thought maybe I was being too cliche by thinking that would be what happened.  I like that the author kept that the way it was.

Now, Liz winning the lottery was perfection. The things she did on her bucket list trip are exactly the types of things I'd want to do if I won the lottery, especially the part about helping rebuild or fix up the building for the school.  While I didn't love this one as much as the other book I read by this author, Madam Love,  Actually, I still really liked it a lot, and sped through the sweet and fun story.

Blog Tour: Minx by Maggie Adams

Minx
Author: Maggie Adams
Release Date: April 30th, 2019
Genre: Women’s Fiction, Romantic Comedy
Cover Designer: Backcover KLPS

A romantic comedy about friendships, flirtations, and the elusive “Fantasm!”

Hi! I’m Miranda Blake and this is my story. Well, sort of. It’s more like a twisted fairytale, if you believe in them. Except there’s no beautiful, young princess with perky breasts, perfectly coiffed hair and a sassy attitude. I’m closing in on fifty, thirty pounds overweight according to Weight Watchers, and, after nursing two kids and that bitch, gravity, doing her job, I’m lucky the ladies don’t hit my knees. The gorgeous brown mane of hair is slightly frizzy from my ridiculous attempts to recapture my youth by dyeing the hell out of it. As for sassy attitude, well, it wasn’t so long ago that I was a doormat. And the charming prince who sweeps me off my feet into the life of my dreams? I have a dog called Prince, German Shepherd, who knocks me on my ass if I’m in the way when the doorbell rings. Does that count?
“I want a divorce.”

I paused and looked up from packing our suitcases for our anniversary trip to Aruba. The ambient light he had insisted upon when we remodeled barely illuminated his form much less his facial expression. I didn’t mind the lighting usually, it smoothed over the slight imperfections on our bodies and made everything look soft and supple. Tonight, I would have given my left boob for one of those interrogation lights you see on detective shows.

“I’m sorry. What did you say?” Like the doormat I am, I continued to fold his underwear into the case. The frustration coming from his voice was enough to convince me he was telling the truth, but I didn’t want to believe him. So, I continued to fold the damn clothes like an idiot, hoping this was his idea of a twisted joke at my expense. I’d had a lot of those over the years.

“You heard me, Miranda.” He raked his right hand through his graying hair. For a moment, I felt a twinge of envy. Men were so damn lucky in growing older. The gray or the glasses made them look sophisticated and worldly. I, however, looked like that myopic frizzy haired witch in those wizard movies. I blinked, returning his frown with a slight smile.

“You don’t mean that,” I said, shaking my head. I could feel the panic beginning to rise. What if he did mean it? What would I do? I’d given up my job as a journalist over twenty-five years ago to get married and have children. I’d stayed home, the perfect housewife and mother, because that’s the way he wanted it. Anger began to replace the panic. I’d given up my dreamsto allow him his and this is how he repays me?

The clothes were packed so I started toward the bathroom to fill the toiletries. Brushing past him, I was surprised when he grabbed my arm. “You’re not listening! God, you do this every time there’s something you don’t want to hear. Do you know how annoying that is?”

Annoying? Avoiding confrontation was annoying?? I almost laughed out loud. If he only knew how many times I had wanted to scream at him, to insist he listen to me for once. Perhaps I should let fly right now and really let the bastard have it. After all, he deserved it with this stupid demand.

Who the hell gets divorced after twenty-five years? I mean, that’s like the last year to make a change, isn’t it? After that, you take stock of your life, decide that it may not be all you dreamed of but it’s good enough, and you wait each other out on the death sentence.

I opened my mouth to tell him just that when I noticed he had moved away and was shuffling through the suitcase. “What in the hell are you doing?” I growled at him as I began refolding my things. “We are going on our anniversary cruise tomorrow morning. I need to pack. You need to get a grip on whatever this male menopause thing is and be ready to enjoy our trip.”

Oh my God! Did I just say that out loud? I peeked up at him. His mouth was opening and closing like a fish out of water. I watched the blood rush from his throat to his head. Yep, I’d said it out loud. He grabbed my arms and pushed me into the desk chair. I was suddenly frightened. How odd! I’d never been frightened of him before. Perhaps it was because his face was so close, I could smell the whiskey on his breath, see myself in his eyes. But more than likely it was because he had his fingers around my throat, and he was squeezing.

“Pay attention, Miranda. I no longer want you. I no longer desire you. You have become an albatross weighing me down. We are divorcing and that’s final. You go your way and I go mine. I take what is mine and you take what is yours.” He released me and stepped back to the suitcase, calmly taking out my clothes once again.

“The kids?” I gasped out, rubbing the sting from the skin of my throat.

“The kids are adults. They will be fine.” He closed the suitcase with a snap. “I’m going on the cruise. When I return, I expect you to be out of the house. Everything can be handled through our lawyers.”

The cruise. My clothes. His silences. I closed my eyes against the knowledge of my own stupidity. “Who is she?”

I could feel his stare. He was weighing whether to tell me, so it must be someone I knew. “It doesn’t matter.”

I opened my eyes. “It does to me.”

For the first time, he looked uneasy. He cleared his throat. “It’s Megan Clark. As soon as our divorce is final, she’ll be Megan Blake.”

“Our daughter’s tennis coach?!” I shot up from the chair. “You’ve been fucking our daughter’s tennis coach?!” This threw my anger into high gear like nothing else could. He could mess with me all he wanted, but to deliberately hurt our daughter, use her for his selfish desires?

I pushed him out the bedroom door. “You cheating sack of shit! You find my avoidance of issues, annoying, well, let me help you clear the air! I find your constant handling of your balls annoying, your clearing your throat then swallowing phlegm annoying, your constant critique of everyone else annoying, your pompous attitude about my friends annoying,” I took a deep breath, noting with satisfaction that he now clutched the suitcase to his chest in defense, and screamed at the top of my lungs. “But mostly I find your selfish, narcissistic, cloying attempts to be the man you need to be but fall far short of, to be ANNOYING!”

“You’re insane!” he whispered, horrified at my display.

He scrambled down the stairs and headed for the garage as I continued to hail insults down upon his head. “You’re a terrible father to do this to your children! You’re homemade wine tastes like raspberry piss water! Your mother’s potato salad sucked!”

I saved the best for last. One that would ultimately worm its way into his psyche and take root. One this narcissistic rat bastard couldn’t help but take to heart. The one thing I had to constantly praise him on.

I smiled as he hurried into the car. “You’re a mediocre fuck, Dale. You’re a one trick pony in bed and your balls smell like vegetable soup!” I made sure to imprint the look of horror and disgust on his face as he backed out of our garage to go to his lover.

It was only hours later, as I slid onto the sheets of the bed in the guestroom, that I realized throughout the entire confrontation, neither of us had mentioned love. That made me sad for a moment, then a profound relief took hold and I began to cry. I hadn’t realized how tight I had been wound. Fuckin’ twenty-five years and I finally get a do-over. I closed my eyes and dreamed.

L-L-L-Little Reviews - Two Way Overdue ARCs

Both of these ARCs are titles that were published in 2018, one June, one September.  They're different kinds of stories, but I thought I'd go ahead and post my reviews of these two together for a little different post this time.  The first is a YA book, the second is an adult romantic contemporary.

Rabbit and Robot by Andrew Smith:
Genre:  YA science fiction
Release Date: September 25th, 2018
Source:  ARC received and autographed during ALA Annual Convention 2018 which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  5 stars

I realize I've only actually read one other book by Andrew Smith, something I need to rectify, although I guess I did try to read The Alex Crow, and couldn't get into it.  But I loved the first book I read by him, Grasshopper Jungle, and I would say this book reminds me a lot of that one.  The wacky out there science fiction story of a world where everyone is basically controlled by a corporation combined with the angst of teen boys and girls and those unsure exactly of their sexual orientation or at least undergoing gender reassignment makes for a roller coaster of a read.  And not only that, but Smith gets you laughing out loud at so many things, unless it is just that I have the sense of humor of an adolescent still.  There was one character in particular, Parker, that always had me giggling like a middle school boy.  When I read stories like this, with all the craziness and out there bits, I just wonder how in the world does someone's brain work in those ways.  And then I remember that Andrew Smith, the author, is a teacher, so he sees the kind of things that you really can't make up every day at his job.  Highly recommend this one!

And I have to share my picture of meeting the author this past summer!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
Cager has been transported to the Tennessee, a giant lunar-cruise ship orbiting the moon that his dad owns, by Billy and Rowan to help him shake his Woz addiction. Meanwhile, Earth, in the midst of thirty simultaneous wars, burns to ash beneath them. And as the robots on board become increasingly insane and cannibalistic, and the Earth becomes a toxic wasteland, the boys have to wonder if they’ll be stranded alone in space forever.

The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang:
Genre:  Adult contemporary romance
Series:  The Kiss Quotient #1
Release Date: June 5th, 2018
Source:  ARC received from publisher which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  4 stars

Everybody loved this book. And the synopsis totally made me think I might enjoy it as well.   While it did start out interesting, but different from what I expected, I got stalled out about 40% of the way through the book.  Partly because I had books to read at the time for tours and other things, but it just wasn't keeping my interest.  So I set it down at the beginning of July last year, and didn't pick it up again till this past February.  What happened to get me to pick it back up had nothing to do really with how much everyone else seemed to love it on every other blog.  I found this past fall that one of the other employees at my bookstore was also a huge romance reader like I am, and when I told her I had a copy of this, she asked about borrowing it.  I knew I wouldn't get to it, so I let her.  Unlike me, she devoured it much quicker.  She did tell me though, that the part I had stalled at was right before it really picked up and took off for her.  So, I made it a goal for this year to pick it back up and finish.  And I'm so glad I did!  I read more things that made so much sense to me.  The more I read about people, adults specifically, with mild autism, the more I wonder if maybe I have a mild case, but in my day, that wasn't really ever diagnosed like it is today.  In the end, this was a good book, and I have the ARC of the sequel that I need to read soon as well!

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there's not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases--a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn't help that Stella has Asperger's and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice--with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can't afford to turn down Stella's offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan--from foreplay to more-than-missionary position...

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but crave all of the other things he's making her feel. Their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic...
