Excerpt:
“So who are members of the Lynx?” Farran asked.
“Tell me.”
“Hang
around. You’ll see.” Billy took a hearty swig of his beer. “Man, they’re not
fucking gods to me. Excuse the language. You always gotta watch what you say
about them and who you say it to. If any of the Lynx is in trouble, they’re all
there. They stick together. What, I should be grateful I get a nod from them
while most of the patrons, regular customers for years, are ignored?” He took another
swig and looked toward the door. “Speak of the devils … here comes the leader
of the pack.”
We
followed his gaze to a tall figure bustling confidently through the crowd. The
guy looked more like a glam metal rock star than a biker and was clad in a sleeveless,
black-studded vest, tight jeans, and boots, his magnificent head of dark hair
falling two inches below his shoulders. I thought I’d have to pick up Farran’s
jaw—and Angie’s.
Farran
was salivating. “Damn! Is he drop-dead gorgeous or what?”
“Enough
to make you forget Dave Navarro and every single one of The Lost Boys,” Angie
concurred.“ I mean, those cheekbones, too—like they were sculpted to
perfection!”
He
was svelte more than herculean, with a well-toned physique that included
muscular biceps adorned with tattoos. I figured him to be six-foot-one, and in
his early twenties.
“Wait,”
Farran said, glancing at Shannon. “Is that the guy you’re seeing?”
“Who,
Valentin?” Shannon giggled. “Uh, wait a minute. Come with me.”
Farran,
Angie, and I followed as she led us to Valentin and hugged him.
He
hugged her tight in return.
“This
is Valentin,” she said.“ I go out with his brother, Nico, but he and I are
close friends.” During the subsequent introductions, she provided my full name.
“Ah,
Joey’s sister,” he acknowledged.
I
could see the tattoo on his left arm was a dragon. On his upper right arm, he
had what appeared to be a king cobra amid a myriad of roses and flames.
“It’s
a pleasure to meet you,” I said.
“The
pleasure is mine,” he returned.
His
dark eyes drew me in with their formidable intensity. I felt a chill in their
power to seduce without effort. It was as if his soul was burning, and I could
see its fire through the darkness. It forced me to look away.
Author Bio:
Kyrian Lyndon is the author of Shattering Truths, the first book in her Deadly Veils series. She has also published two poetry collections, A Dark Rose Blooms, and Remnants of Severed Chains. Kyrian began writing short stories and fairy tales when she was just eight years old. In her adolescence, she moved on to poetry. At sixteen, while working as an editor for her high school newspaper, she wrote her first novel, and then completed two more novels at the ages of nineteen and twenty-five.
Born and raised in Woodside, Queens, New York, Kyrian was the middle of three daughters born to immigrants —her father from Campochiaro, Italy; her mother from Havana, Cuba. She has worked primarily in executive-level administrative positions with major New York publishing companies. She resides on Long Island in New York.

Blog Tour and Review: Dead Girls Society by Michelle Krys

I got an email from the publisher asking if I'd like to participate in a tour for this book and another. The other one is a middle grades book, so isn't my normal read, but they did send me an ARC of it as well. This book sounded really good, and actually I was definitely pleased at just how good it turned out to be!
The main character is a girl named Hope. Hope has cystic fibrosis, which means she spends a lot of her time out of school because of how easily something can keep her from being able to breathe, how easily she can get sick. When the story starts, she has gotten a text from some number that she doesn't know, and it is an invitation to participate in some kind of secret group. It will require her to sneak out of her house late at night, but after being stuck at home, and her best friend Ethan seems to be moving on with a girl at school, she decides it is worth it.
When she gets to the meeting place, she sees 4 other girls, ones that she doesn't think she has anything in common with. There are instructions there for each of them, they must participate in dares. Whoever makes it till the very end will win a lot of money. If they fail a dare, they will be cut out of the competition. If they cheat, tell anyone about the activities, or even just quit, they are threatened with punishment. Each of the girls, other than Hope, seem to have something in their past that the person who is running this whole thing knows and is holding over them as blackmail.
The dares are dangerous as you'd expect. A couple girls get really hurt, and there are several times that Hope almost doesn't make it. In fact the person behind it all decides that she's cheated, and her punishment is something that affects her whole family.
Not only is she dealing with this society, but she's also worried about losing her friend Ethan to this other girl at school. But then a really popular, cute guy picks her for a project partner when she goes back to school, and he seems to really like her, and be interested in her. But Ethan tells Hope that he doesn't trust this guy.
In the end it will boil down to who is really behind the dares, which of the girls in the group are up front about what they are hiding. Hope will have to find out if her friendship with Ethan can survive her wanting more, even if he seems to not see her that way. She also needs the money to help her family, and is unsure if this new guy is really what he seems to be.
The book was a really good, quick read. I didn't make too many notes as I updated on Goodreads. Probably because it was so good I didn't want to stop to take the time to do that. I enjoyed the New Orleans setting since I was just down there the first weekend of October, and what was kind of funny was that I actually was reading another book at the same time that took place in the city. Anyway, I highly recommend this, and I will definitely be purchasing it for the school library where I work. I liked the characters a lot, you had the main character with a debilitating disease, you had gay characters, there was a suicide that was a big part of the story, and other many other types of characters. My Review:
The synopsis of this book sold me right away. When I saw the tour, I signed up right away because I'd already been very interested in the story. Honestly, I wasn't disappointed in this at all. While it wasn't a perfect story, it was a very good one.
We have two main characters that we get the story from. First is Nina. She is a 17 year old girl who lives with her adoptive mom. Nina has had dreams her whole life where she seems to see through a boy's, who is now a man's, eyes. And it seems that while in the past, most of what she saw was pretty normal life things, she's begun to see murders, and other bad things that he is doing. She knows that if it is real, she needs to do something. But she doesn't know how. She's tried anonymous tips, but they didn't help. It seems anonymous tips in the way she tried aren't really taken seriously by the cops. And there's only so much she can do, without becoming a suspect or accomplice herself. But this time, this time she thinks that she may be able to save an older couple that she sees the man that she called "The Thief" scoping out. And she ends up getting one of her old friends, Warren, to help her out.
Warren is the other main character. A long time ago he and Nina used to be like best friends. But Warren's family is made up of some interesting, yet dangerous characters. His father for one, and all of his brothers. In fact there was one time that one of Warren's brothers said something to him when Nina was there about how he wondered if Warren had gotten with Nina, that she had a good body. It was at that point that Nina became uncomfortable being around them, and really kind of stopped hanging out with Warren. She'd only gone to Warren since then to get ahold of drugs, drugs that she used to keep herself from sleeping and dreaming about these horrible murders. But that all changed when her mom found the drugs and made her get clean. But now she's gone to Warren because she wants to get a gun and go hunt this killer that she sees in her head.
Nina gets Warren to help without actually explaining things, but when he catches on to the couple she's taken him to their house being missing, he thinks she is crazy, and wonders how she is involved with this most likely crime. She tells him the truth, about her dreams, and of course he doesn't believe her at first. But eventually she gets him to kind of give her dreams a fair chance. And in doing so, convinces him to take a summer trip to go find him, and take care of him in any way possible, even if killing him is the only way to do it. Warren goes with her, to try to keep her from doing that very thing. Also on the trip is being able to meet her birth mother who has reached out to her, and that gives her the excuse to go with her mom.
But the trip to the desert will hold some really big surprises for Nina, she will run into the "Thief", or Dylan Shadwell. She will end up being around him and getting to know him. In which case she wonders if what she was seeing was real. She even gives him lots of tests to see if maybe he can see back in her dreams at the same time she sees into his.
In the end it all comes to a big head, as this type of story usually does. And it is such a great way that it comes around. I could totally see this as a movie, one that I would be sure to go see. This is such a great serial killer story, along with the strange ability of being able to see someone else's actions through your dreams. Along with that, the connection that pops up between Dylan and Nina really makes the story. I highly recommend this, and can't wait to purchase it for my school library for my students to read.
