Leaving her old life behind, she joins Keystone, a secret school for thieves, where students are trained to seal everything analog and original because something—or someone—is changing history to suit their needs.

Excerpt:

Crawling out of the lake, I sprawl on the beach, sucking in precious air for as long as I dare. Still breathless, I limp into the woods. My temples throb and I long to return to the house and climb into bed, to huddle under the blankets until the shivering stops. Last chance to keep my old life. I could come out of this a survivor. My parents would be so proud… Once the story hit the Networks, my Influencer status would be reinstated—especially now that everyone who knew my family’s secret is…dead.
Isn’t that convenient?
I don’t dwell on who’s behind the explosion. Maybe part of me already knows the truth, but I’m not ready for it. Instead, the final fleeting glimpse I had of my best friend, Deena, her blond hair whipping across her face right before the blast, assaults me.
Doubling over, I swallow the sickness rising my throat, shutting my eyes against her. We weren’t speaking, but she didn’t deserve this. None of them did. Tears bubble down my cheeks. Dropping to my knees, I stare up at the starry sky, an irrevocable ache seeping through me. How can I be in this world without them? Wherever they are, can they see me? The universe is endless, and the stars shine down without even a wink.
A voice arrives on the breeze from the lake, its nearness sobering me. For the plan to work, the world needs to believe I’m dead. But if I stick to the plan I can never go back. That truth should terrify me, but I’m already overwhelmed. Besides, there’s nothing left to go back to. Not without Adam. He was the only one who made me feel like I mattered. Breathing deep, I heave myself to my feet and drag myself deeper into the woods. I have no home. I have to keep going.
The old me would have ordered a car to drive me from Lake Tahoe to the Sequoia National Forest, but the Disconnects offered me refuge on the condition I wouldn’t be tracked. Starting now, I’m invisible. They were supposed to send a guide, but he never showed up, and it’s pure luck I stumble upon the bikes, sneakers, and hooded sweatshirt hidden behind a tree. Taking it as a sign I’ve made the right decision, I yelp. Choking back the cry, I tug the sweatshirt over my dress with shaking hands. In the pocket I find a tube of glittery, gold paint and draw a haphazard zigzag over half my face to disguise my identity from facial-recognition cameras. The mark of a Disconnect.

My Review:

This one really intrigued me from the idea being similar to the only episode of Black Mirror that I have watched.  Because that's what I was relating it to as I started the book, at first I was a bit disappointed that the story didn't start out with us spending time with Ella in this world of being an Influencer.  However, as we got further along, the way those days were brought in with her journaling to try to get past what she was feeling guilty about, it definitely hit hard how things had been and just how far she had gone, or what she had let trying to stay relevant keep her from doing even when she knew what was right and what was wrong.  It was hard to wonder though, if the boy from her past, Adam, was really someone as bad as she thought at one point, or if he was someone she should have trusted. And in the end, we learn something else new about him, something I had kind of had a tiny bit of wondering about earlier on.  Now, while this isn't listed as part of a series, I sure hope that there is a sequel!  It was definitely left off at the end in a way that there is so much more we could do, and I want to know it.  I want all the other heists that they could go on, and even though they may have stopped the whole Smart Brain takeover as they tried, it sounds like there is still more that could be done and more to save.

I really enjoyed this book, and it kept me turning pages late into the night, so I was very glad it was during my holiday break from school when I got to read it.  I'll be putting this one in my school library for my students to read for sure!

Blog Tour Review with Giveaway: Adorkable by Cookie O'Gorman

Today we have the blog tour for Adorkable by Cookie O’Gorman! Check it out and be sure to grab your paperback copy today!

Book info:
Title:  Adorkable
Author:  Cookie O'Gorman
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance
Release Date: December 3rd, 2019
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Source:  E-galley from publisher which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  5 stars

About Adorkable:

“Captivating, fun, and totally swoon-worthy! This is the kind of story my reader heart craves.” ―Rachel Harris, New York Times bestselling author of Eyes on Me

Available in print for the first time, and with exclusive bonus content only found in the print version! Fall in love with Sally and Becks all over again.

Adorkable (ah-dor-kuh-bul): Descriptive term meaning to be equal parts dorky and adorable. For reference, see Sally Spitz.

Seventeen-year-old Sally Spitz is done with dating. Or at least, she's done with the horrible blind dates/hookups/sneak attacks her matchmaking bestie, Hooker, sets her up on. There's only so much one geek girl and Gryffindor supporter can take.

Her solution: She needs a fake boyfriend. And fast.

Enter Becks, soccer phenom, all-around hottie, and Sally's best friend practically since birth. When Sally asks Becks to be her F.B.F. (fake boyfriend), Becks is only too happy to be used. He'd do anything for Sal―even if that means giving her PDA lessons in his bedroom, saying she's "more than pretty," and expertly kissing her at parties.

The problem: Sally's been in love with Becks all her life―and he's completely clueless.

This book features two best friends, one special-edition Yoda Snuggie, countless beneath-the-ear kisses, and begs the question:

Who wants a real boyfriend when faking it is so much more fun?

My Review:

This book started off so adorably and I was hooked from page one!   And I don't know if I can gush enough about how much I loved it, how happy I was when I finished!  I loved Becks so much, and I love where his name came from, Baldwin Eugene Charles Kent, and that it was leftover from how they were naming all the kids after their uncles but there were four left!  But sigh, Becks, he's like the book boyfriend I would have if I was still in high school and not an old high school librarian.  But let's talk about Sally here too.  You see, I was kind of like Sally.  Totally felt like a nerd, had all the same feelings of inadequacy that she had, crushes on guys like Becks, (although none of them were my best friend).  Also I didn't really date in high school.  I had a blind date or two set up by friends that totally didn't work out.  The banter was cute, the romance was sweet, and I even liked Ash, even if he wasn't going to be the guy for Sally.  So many times I was with Sally and wanted to just slap her best friend Lillian who wouldn't quite trying to set her up.  So much cuteness and sweetness in this book, I finished with a big goofy smile on my face!

ARC Review: Sick Kids in Love by Hannah Moskowitz

Book info:
Title:  Sick Kids in Love
Author:  Hannah Moskowitz
Genre: YA Contemporary
Release Date:  November 5th, 2019

Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Source: Physical ARC received from publisher which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  5 stars

Synopsis:

It's easier--
It's safer--
It's better--
--for the other person.
She's got issues. She's got secrets. She's got rheumatoid arthritis.

He's got a chronic illness Isabel's never heard of, something she can't even pronounce. He understands what it means to be sick. He understands her more than her healthy friends. He understands her more than her own father who's a doctor.
He's gorgeous, fun, and foul-mouthed. And totally into her.
Isabel has one rule: no dating.
It's complicated--
It's dangerous--
It's never felt better--
--to consider breaking that rule for him.

My Review:
I don't know exactly where to start with this one, except to say how much I adored it!  It was such a sweet and cute story, but with a lot of moments that were still emotionally intense or else really made you think.  Since I am not a sick person, there's a lot I don't understand first hand. But, I think this story did a great job at sharing things that people who do have chronic illnesses feel and hear from "healthy" people all the time.  The story really made me think a lot about how I feel or think when I hear about people who are sick and what they have to deal with on a daily basis.  It definitely brought to mind all the times in the past that I may have even said something about a person not looking like they were sick or disabled whenever they pulled into a handicapped parking spot or something similar.  Things in recent years after meeting more people who don't look sick, but are, I've quit even thinking that way myself, and now it does stand out when I hear other people around me say those things.  I really liked that the author was able to write a story where as the tagline says, they don't die in this one, but there were still some emotionally tense situations in the book.

It wasn't just the part about being sick kids that was so good in the book either though.  There were normal teen situations, absentee parents, not  knowing how good some friends really were, and then of course feeling attractive to the opposite sex.  It was so great to be able to see a toxic friendship ended, but the character still wondering if she was doing the right thing.

And oh the humor!  I loved Sasha's sarcasm in so many situations, as well as his hilarious answers to Isabel's questions.  While the dead girl answers weren't completely clear to me for what they actually did for the story, it was a unique and different idea to be included.

A great story, I can't wait to get this for the kids in my school library to read!

But does Toff really like her or is this just another lesson?

My Review:
OMG!  I loved this book to death!  This is the book written for book bloggers and readers alike. Especially those in love with romance books.  Amy was so much myself as a teen, except it was just reading in my teenage years, and now as an adult there is all the social media and blogging that I totally would have been into back then, since I'm loving them now.  Reading about all the assignments Amy had to complete in order to win the contest to meet her favorite author was just like hanging out with my fellow book bloggers.  I loved how all the supporting characters were just as vivid and interesting as the main characters, and having them there really just enhanced the story and filled it all in.  I have to say that sometimes it is nice to have what you think of as normal families like Amy's, because there are still families out there like that.  Parents that are happily married, a younger brother that is a normal younger brother, etc.  But to have real life issues right along with that. As someone who grew up with a pretty normal family, issues like one parent losing a job and needing to find one actually is something I did deal with.  So it was nice to read about that, and get a chance to read of a teen with a similar lifestyle and dreams as when I was one.

I was supposed to read the book that this is a companion to when it came out, The Replacement Crush, but I never had the time.  After meeting Viv and Dallas in this one though, I know that I need to make the time to go back and read their love story as well.   I'll be sure to share this book with my readers and bloggers in the school where I'm a librarian, and to recommend it at the bookstore where I work.

Review with Author Interview and Giveaway: Ask Me Anything by Molly E. Lee

Book info:
Title:  Ask Me Anything
Author:  Molly E. Lee
Genre:  YA contemporary
Release Date:  May 7th, 2019
Publisher:  Entangled Teen
Source:  Finished copy received from publisher for review which did not influence my opinion
My rating:  5 stars

Synopsis:
I should’ve kept my mouth shut.

But Wilmont Academy’s been living in the Dark Ages when it comes to sex ed, and someone had to take matters into her own hands. Well, I’m a kick-ass coder, so I created a totally anonymous, totally untraceable blog where teens can come to get real, honest, nothing-is-off-limits sex advice.

And holy hell, the site went viral—and we’re talking way beyond Wilmont—overnight. Who knew this town was so hard up?

Except now the school administration is trying to shut me down, and they’ve forced Dean—my coding crush, aka the hottest guy in school—to try to uncover who I am. If he discovers my secret, I’ll lose him forever. And thousands of teens who need real advice won’t have anyone to turn to.

Ask me anything…except how to make things right.

My Review:
I knew from the author's reasoning for writing the book when I heard about it, as well as the topic and knowing that the main character had experienced something similar to what I experienced when I was younger, that this book was right up my alley.  This did not prepare me for how good this book really turned out to be.  The story was so realistic. The way certain people acted, the fellow students, to the types of questions people might have, as well as even when they're answered a certain way, some people still wanting to blame and pretend that she said something different that caused them their problem.  I'm not a coder or anywhere close to being like one, but I enjoyed a lot of that part of the story.  I could definitely relate to getting so sucked into what they were doing with what they loved, as I do with many things in my life.  The way that Amber felt that liking something now was wrong when she had told the other guy no, the guilt, all of that is realistic.

But it was even more than just this specific issue that made this a great story.  There was how strong  Amber was, and how Dean knew it, recognized it, respected it, and even told her that's part of what he liked about her without being patronizing.  It was even so realistic how he reacted at the end of the story, but especially because we got his inner dialogue and feelings on the issues, and knowing what he knew about her totally fell into all of it and his final decisions.

Honestly, I can't wait to put this one in my school library to share with students.  Not only did the website answer honestly, Amber used research from experts and adults to answer things, but also always told them that this was an opinion, and they should try to talk to parents or girlfriend/boyfriends before they did anything on their own.  It was very well thought out and exactly the thing that is needed these days with all of the experts and fake news and clickbait news stories out there.

Author Interview:

1.      What does your writing process look like? Do you know the whole story when you start?  Or do you just start writing and go with it (seat of the pants writing)?  If you plan it out, how do you do that?  Outline, notecards, post-it-notes, etc.?

Thanks so much for having me!

My writing process varies depending on the content of the book. Normally, I start with the characters—though there have been books where a scene plays out in my head without me even knowing the characters. With Ask Me Anything I saw Amber (my main character) first. She formed in my mind and we took the plot from there. After narrowing down a general concept and theme, I sat down and plotted each chapter—a line or two about each scene—on one of my thousands of notebooks (I have a weakness for buying too many at a time lol). Once that was completed, I sat down every day and wrote. There were some new chapters added and some old ones cut, but for the most part, I stuck to the original plot.

2.      Do you edit as you go, or wait till you're finished before you edit?  How many times would you say you go over it yourself before having another set of eyes look it over?

I always wait until I’m finished before I go back and edit. I have friends who edit as they go and I think they’re amazing for having the power to do it. For me, it’s easier to get everything out. I like the freedom in the first draft, that sweeping feeling of knowing that you’re writing this first draft solely for you. I learn so much about my characters through this process and the true grit of the story and by the time I’m finished I have a much better sense of what is important to the plot and what can be cut. I tend to edit it twice myself before sending it to a trusted friend with an objective eye. Then I send it on to my editor and we’ll go through nearly four passes of edits before the book is sparkling enough for print.

3.      Are you part of a writer’s group that gets together and helps each other with their writing?

I’m not part of a physical or official group, but I’m lucky to have an amazing circle of author friends who help support and encourage me on any given project. I do the same for them and we often cheer each other on and check in with daily word counts. It helps all of us get the words on the page when life tries to get in the way.

4.      I'm a high school librarian, former teacher, and I love how this story touches on schools and what they offer for sex ed. How did you come up with the idea for this story?

Well, thank you for all you do! Seriously, teachers and librarians are real-life superheroes! This concept was a collaboration between myself and my editor, Stacy Abrams. Given the social climate, we were craving a story with a strong female lead who was done sitting quietly by when her peers were in need. As I dug deeper into the story and themes it revolves around, I realized that learning about how to be healthy and safe when dealing with sex as a teenager is truly one of the easier concepts compared to some of the dark situations happening in schools in our modern world. The more I learned about Amber’s character and the deeper I dug into the story, it became clear that being open about sexual health often led to being more open about other sensitive issues, and having healthy communication between adults and teens is the first step in creating a positive change in the world.

5.   What are your favorite: Books/authors/genres:

This is such a HARD question! I love to read and do so across genres but I truly love fantasy and paranormal. Something about the other-worldly elements call to me when I need an escape from reality. Some of my favorite authors are, JK Rowling, Kimberly Derting, Sara J. Maas, Molly McAdams, Staci Hart, Rebecca Yarros, Rachel Harris, and Cindi Madsen!

Movies/TV Shows: I’m a GIANT Marvel nerd and proudly where my Loki emblem wherever I go! So anything superhero related I’m all about. I also love shows like New Girl, Comedians in Cars getting Coffee, Sons of Anarchy, Buffy, and Stranger Things.

Music: I am a Spotify addict so I’m constantly discovering new music! Some of my go-to bands are Blue October, Queen, NF, deadmau5, Halsey, and all kinds of movie scores which I love having on in the background while I’m writing!

Food/Writing snack: Coffee or green tea, and I usually try to go for something that will fuel my writing session like carrots or an apple. Only because I tried my favorite chocolate for a while and that only made me crash LOL.

I’m so grateful you had me over today to chat! I hope you’ll enjoy ASK ME ANYTHING when it releases on May 7th! Be sure to check out the EPIC giveaway I’m hosting in celebration of its release!
