Review: Walk on Earth a Stranger (The Gold Seer Trilogy #1) by Rae Carson

First, thanks to Greenwillow Books and Edelweiss for allowing me to read an e-galley of this title.  I really enjoyed the first book in this author's other series, The Girl of Fire and Thorns, when I read it for the Truman Award nomination in Misssouri, back in 2013.  Even though I haven't read on in that series yet, I knew I had to try this one when I heard it.  And I guess I had assumed it would be more of a fantasy story, when really it is a historical fiction story with a tiny fantasy element in it.  But it doesn't matter that it was different than I thought, I still loved it!  And knowing it is part of a series, I am so eager for the 2nd book, and don't know how I'll wait until next year for it! 

The story is set back in the time of the Gold Rush.  The main character is Leah, and she lives in Georgia with her mother and father.  Leah has an ability that she can sense gold.  If it is anywhere near, she gets a little tickle in her brain and it is something that gets stronger as she gets closer, or as the amount of the gold gets bigger.  To the point she can barely avoid it without getting a horrible headache or sick.  Her best friend is a boy named Jefferson who has an Irish father and a Native American mother.  His father has a horrible temper and treats Jefferson really bad.  One day Jefferson shows up at school with a flyer about people traveling to California in search of a treasure trove of gold that is proclaimed to be there.  After one horrible day with his father, he comes and tries to convince Leah to leave with him.  He tells her she could come as his wife, or they could be brother and sister. But she doesn't want to leave her parents, her father is sick, and anyway, she loves them.  And she's sure that at some point they will probably head that way. 

Then the unthinkable happens. Leah comes home to find her parents have been killed.  Whoever it was has also taken the gold they had hidden away.  Her Uncle Hiram, who she's rarely seen, shows up about the same time to take over as her guardian.  And with her senses, she is able to sense that he is probably the one who killed them and took their gold.  It seems he knows what she can do, and she doesn't want to stay to help him. She knows it will not be good. So she finds a way to take off on her own, she cuts her hair, dresses as a boy, and follows others on their way.  She leaves a false trail for her uncle.  Along the way she is able to get hooked up with some other wagon trains and groups.  She even runs into Jefferson again in Independence, Missouri. 

On the trail there will be many hard times, she will learn to work hard to try to keep her cover as a boy.  At the same time things will happen to her, she will start to have her body change, as any girl her age might be doing.  There will be injuries, and deaths, and need to find food and water.  They will run into Indians and other dangers.  The whole time she must try to keep being a girl a secret, and try to figure out just what her relationship with Jefferson is.  Not to mention hiding her ability to find gold.

Such a great book, I could barely put it down any time I was reading it on break at work.  As I said in the first paragraph, I loved it so much, I don't know how I'm going to wait until the next one comes out.  Hopefully I can get an egalley of it as well.  I highly recommend this historical fiction for teens.  It will be a definite addition to the school library where I work as well!

So I had all my books picked, and then I lost the piece of paper I'd written them down on!  I went back through all my books I've already read on Goodreads, and could only find 4, until I tried one more time and finally found the last one!  So without further ado, here are my 5 covers with keys.

1.  But this, this one is my favorite.  The key isn't huge, but it is like all the other things that you look and find throughout the beautiful cover, all things that relate to bits of the story.

Review: Dumplin' by Julie Murphy

First, thanks to Balzer and Bray as well as Edelweiss for allowing me to read an e-galley of this.  Let me say that I just loved this.  I would pick it up to read, and hate every time that I had to put it down to do anything else.  I would think about when the next time I could pick it up to read would be.  I totally connected with the main character in so many ways.  Although in high school I was not overweight, I have spent a majority of my adult life that way, and so there were many things I identified with.  But even if I wasn't overweight in high school, until my Junior year I wore glasses, and it wasn't until I got contacts that I started feeling any confidence whatsoever, and even then, it really didn't kick in until college.  I've had issues with friends like in the book, and while some have come back in ways that are like what you'd want, not all have. 

The main character is Willowdean Dickson.  She is a little overweight, enough so that she is insecure about it to a point. But not a lot. She's got a best friend named Ellen, who is very pretty, but also very nice.  Most of the time Will is comfortable with herself, although most often a kind of 3rd wheel in a way to El and her boyfriend Tim.  Will works at a restaurant called Harpy's.  There's a cute private school boy named Bo that works there.  Will has kind of had a crush on him, and he's always just been kind of friendly.  Until one night that summer when he kisses her.  And then they keep kissing.  But it's always when they're somewhere alone, and Willow wonders if that means he doesn't want anyone to know.  At the same time El has decided it is time to go all the way with Tim.  Will feels a bit left behind, and it is even worse because El is now hanging out with a girl named Callie from the clothing store where she works.  Soon Will is keeping the secret about Bo, and El seems to not be talking to Will about everything, telling Callie more, and they kind of drift apart. 

Now I didn't mention that Will's mom runs the big annual beauty pageant in town, something she's never really acted like Will, or Dumplin' as her mom calls her, should try to be a part of.  NOt only that, but her aunt Luce has recently passed away, partly because of being very obese, and Will had always felt closest to her, closer than to her mom.  Soon Will decides she is going to enter the pageant, to make a statement. And from there, all kinds of hell breaks loose.

As I read through the book I just knew at first that there was no way Bo could really be such a cute guy, and really be attracted to her.  Like Will I just knew there had to be something wrong with him, he had to be playing her or something.  But I wanted so bad for him to really be the guy he seemed to be.  And then there was the horrible fight that Will has with El. And while I understood somewhat why Will didn't want El to be in the pageant, I also didn't understand.  I mean how much better to have your best friend in something so scary?  But again, the reasons behind why she said what she did, and the way they all acted, to me they seemed very realistic. 

In the end I was happy with how it went, I won't tell you exactly what happens, who ends up with who, etc.  I will just tell you  it is a good ending, a happy one. 

Waiting on Wednesday: Denton Little's Birthdate (Denton Little #2) by Lance Rubin

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases that we're eagerly awaiting.  As I almost always do, I've chosen another sequel this week.  This time it was a book I didn't realize just how much I was going to love it.  You can read my gushing review of the first book, Denton Little's Deathdate HERE.  I just knew at the end there had to be another, because it was a pretty big cliffhanger at the end.  I'm so excited to read on and get to hear more Denton's hilarious adventures and sarcastic wit.  Here is the blurb from Goodreads:

2015 Series Ender Challenge

 

I really try not to join into challenges this late in the year, but this one just fits so well with books I've already read, as well as my September Sequels Challenge, that I had to go ahead and join in.  Here are the rules:

Challenge Guidelines:

2. Anyone can enter. You don’t have to have a blog just as long as you review your books somewhere: on your blog if you have one, Amazon, Goodreads, Shelfari, etc.

Any genre, length, or format is acceptable as long as it is the last book in a series where all books in the series have been published and no more books are currently intended to be published in the series. If an author makes a decision somewhere during the year to add on to the series, we will count both the original last book in the series and the “new last” book in the series assuming the author isn’t going to write more than one additional book. Last book published in a series doesn’t count if more books are expected to be published.
4. You can list your series enders ahead of time or do a singular wrap up post. If you decide to list them up front, feel free to change them throughout the year as necessary.

Stacking the Shelves - September 13th, 2015

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.  It is a way for us to share the new books we have collected.  I did actually buy a book this week, or a book related item I guess I should say. But other than that, I did pretty well.  I also got two awesome e-galleys this week.  One that I had just even planed a WOW for later this month!  So here we go.  

Physical Books:

My e-galley of Dark Shimmer expired before I got to finish it, so I checked it out.  I got an ARC of The Curious Tale of the In-Between as a trade on Twitter.  I got an awesome prize pack of swag and the book Mania from the author J.R. Johansson for reading and reviewing the e-galley of it before it came out.  I love that series!  And then, I had to order from the bookstore where I work, The Raven's Prophecy Tarot card set that was drawn by Maggie Stiefvater herself.  I wasn't lucky enough to win any of them back when all the giveaways were being held, but I had to buy a set when I could.  

E-galleys:

 The first one I got from Netgalley, and it was one I'd just done a WOW post for later this month on.  The second one I found Friday night.  I was showing a fellow bookstore employee how Edelweiss worked on my Nook, and it was just there!!!  I was so excited I immediately requested it and was approved!  So excited.  I just love Sarah Rees Brennan's books!

Free e-books:

 Both were free on Amazon.  I think I did pretty good only getting two free books this week.

A smaller haul for the week for me, which is a good thing. Although I did get a bunch of books at a garage sale for my school library. But I won't be sharing it on here, just too many.

Review: The Walled City by Ryan Graudin (TBR Challenge #11)

I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this when I went to BEA a year ago.  I also got to meet the author and get an autograph.  As you can see though, I didn't get to it for over a year.  So it is #11 on my TBR Challenge list for the year.  It was a pretty good book, had some definite unique parts to the story, and reading the author's note at the end about a real walled city made it even better after I was done reading it.

There are three main characters that we get the story from, and their stories are all interwoven.  First we meet Jin Ling.  Jin Ling is a girl who has disguised herself as a boy in the Walled City in order to try to find her sister who she knows was taken to be in a brothel.  Life on the streets for her is dangerous.  But she is fast, and being able to get away really is what keeps her alive.  Until she steals brand new boots from another street kid, a big bully.  As he is trying to get his boots back, and probably kill Jin Ling in the process, we meet Dai, our next character.  Dai isn't a normal kid living on his own in the Walled City.  He is there to find information about one of the biggest gangsters for the authorities outside the city.  If he can do this, he will not be thrown in jail for crimes he committed before.  A crime that ended in the death of his own brother.  He comes across Jin Ling, and decides to help her, a boy as he thinks, in order to get Jin Ling to be a runner for him, and help him get into the gangster's headquarters to get the info he needs.  It is in this headquarters, which has a brothel, that we meet the third character, Mei Yee.  She is a prostitute, but she doesn't have to be with a lot of customers as there is an ambassador that pays very well to keep her only for himself.  He treats her pretty well, other than the prostitute part, but she wants more.  And when she sees the handsome boy outside her window, Dai, she knows what she might want and what might be out there.  You may have guessed the Mei Yee is Jin Ling's sister.  But the connection isn't made until the end of the story.  Dai has 18 days, and the story is told by the days.  The last day will be New Year's Eve, when the authorities are planning a raid, and they need the info that Dai is supposed to find. 

Of course there will be lots of obstacles along the way.  Jin Ling will get a very serious wound and Dai will find out that she is a girl.  But Jin Ling won't let that wound keep her from helping Dai earn his freedom from his past crimes, and it should all work out to hopefully free them all.  Mei Yee will have to deal with the danger that comes from trying to help Dai as well, only hers will be the threat of being hooked on heroin for betraying the gangster.  Not to mention that her ambassador will not be happy when he detects her thinking of someone else. 

Really a good story, and I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

Review: Arianna's Destiny by Michelle Sodaro (September Sequel Challenge #1 and TBR Pile Challenge #11))

So this was the first book I read for this year's September is for Sequels Challenge.  I had planned to read it this summer actually, but then I didn't find my copy until August. So I held onto it for the challenge.  This is a sequel to the book Arianna's Honor.  My friend Michelle Sodaro is the author.  Michelle is the friend that helped me to actually finish NaNoWriMo last November.  She's the friend I plan to work with again this November on another story.  So as I said with the review of the last book, this is a hard review.  But Michelle knows how I review and blog, and so she will understand my thoughts and comments about the books I hope.  If you haven't read the first book, you should stop here, click the link above to read my review of the first one, and then go read the book before you come read this review.

Arianna is back but she's spent the time between the last book and this one off in a cabin by herself.  After the horrible things she dealt with in the last book, the killing of the men she knew, the death of her youngest brother, etc.  But her brother Peter shows up at the beginning of the book to bring her back to Prince Nicholas's kingdom. There is a war coming, and they need her skills and talents to help train their army that has only known times of peace.  Peter has been put in charge of the army, and he wants Arianna to help.  When she arrives back, she is nervous to see Nicky at first.  You see, they had that one night together.  But she knows it is probably not meant to be more.  And she is proven right when the Prince's parents, the King and Queen, tell him a marriage has been arranged for him, to Princess Merriam.  Yet there is the Prince's friend, Zachary.  There is something about him, Arianna knows he's had a life with many setbacks like her own, and not only that, she can see things in him that are the same in her.  When someone in the kingdom is killed, war will truly start, and Arianna must help figure out how to win.  She will call on the gypsies for help, for what help they might be willing and able to give. There will be betrayal, but it will be someone that had sent up bad warnings before.  In the end, most everything will come up settled.  It's not an ending where everyone is just put into their final places, there is enough of a question about what Arianna will do next that there could be another book.  It just doesn't need to have one if not.

I did think it was a good story.  But as I've mentioned with other Self-Published books, there were many spelling errors.  Not in words spelled wrong as if someone didn't know how to spell them, just probably oversights as it was being written or typed.  I know that Michelle said she did kind of rush to get this 2nd book in the series out last year, that it could have stood another read-through, and I've offered if she needs that from now on, I'd be happy to do it.  :-)  There were a few things that did bother me about the story as well.  A lot of people said "Fair enough", a lot of times.  Enough that I noticed it.  Also, I get the wolf comparisons, and it worked for the story. But there were times that it seemed almost forced or overdone.  There were a few times a comparison was done by someone and really a wolf isn't the first animal that would have come to my mind for that action.  There's also a couple of times that Arianna pulled her sword or knife that seemed like major overkill.  I mean, as much as she loved her brothers, she would seriously pull a sword on them?  And then when someone was making a joking comment about Zachary she almost pulled  a knife on them. That was a little much for me.  But I guess that is her personality and she is so different from me, that I just must not understand doing that.

So to sum it up, a good story, with some issues that are probably mostly due to the self publishing aspect of not having the final professional edit, and a good conclusion to the first story.

Audio Book Review: Torment (Fallen #2) by Lauren Kate

I decided to listen to this book after reading and mostly enjoying the first book, Fallen.  I finally figured out how to download audio books from the local library, and I'm now taking advantage of it.  I had mixed feelings about this book as well.  In my review of the first book, I mentioned how it definitely reminded me of Twilight.  However in this book, the guy that Luce is in love with, Daniel, totally embodies the controlling qualities that people seemed to attribute to Edward in Twilight, except that Edward was nowhere near this bad.  Daniel actually told Luce she should be "obeying" him.  That was the exact word, "obey".  Wow, my mouth hung open when I heard that on the audio book. 

So, this story picks up where the last one left off.  Daniel has taken Luce to a school out in California, one that he says she will be safe at.  In the meantime, Daniel and Cam are part of some kind of truce, and the story passes day by day of the truce.  But Luce is far away from all her old friends and family.  And as far as they know, she is still at Sword and Cross, the school from the last story.  Daniel tells her she cannot leave the campus, it's not safe.  Even when she goes down to the beach with other kids from the school, he gets upset with her, and tells her she can't even go that far.  The other kids at the school, well some of them, are Nephilim, or half angel/half human.  They have two teachers that are just part of the "gifted" program, what the human students think it is.  One is an angel and one is a demon.  Luce does have several close calls, but she also learns a lot while at the school.  She learns about all the shadows that she'd always seen.  It turns out they're called announcers, and they can use them to see events in the past.  They can even be used for traveling from one place to another.  Kind of like a transporter on Star Trek or a little wormhole that can be opened up and traveled through.

Of course at the end, the time is pretty much up for the truce.  We've got a new enemy, the Outcasts, and they are pretty creepy.  There is a trip to Las Vegas, and Luce starts seeing past families by looking in the announcers.  She makes a new friend, and even a guy friend, one that makes her wonder if Daniel and the soul-shattering love they have, is really what she wants. What if she could just live a normal life, with a normal boy, would it be worth it?  And what would happen to the curse? 

Honestly it just irritates me when people won't tell the other person what they ask questions about.  Nothing at all.  I think it is ridiculous the way Daniel treats her.  Especially when other people, Cam, other angels/demons, will tell her things.  Maybe not everything she needs to know, but at least some kind of information.  Things that can help her figure things out. Although, other than the "obeying" part, I feel like if a guy I loved, who was an angel, told me I needed to do something to be safe, I would probably do it.  But then, I guess it would be a pretty short, boring story. 

The ending was pretty exciting though, and so I immediately, actually before I even finished the 2nd one, had to download the audio book of the third book, Passion, so that I could pick up right where I left off.  And that is what I'm listening to in the car and when I exercise. 

Waiting on Wednesday - Raging Sea (Undertow #2) by Michael Buckley

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine where we spotlight upcoming releases that we're eagerly awaiting.  As usual it is a sequel to a book I really enjoyed.  This time it is the sequel to Undertow by Michael Buckley, and you can read my review of that one HERE.  It was a pretty unique story, although it reminded me a bit of the short lived TV series Star-Crossed, but that was a good thing.  Here is the very short blurb for this sequel from Goodreads:
