Author Interview:

Christina Bauer is launching a new book in her Fairy Tales of the Magicorum series. Called SLIPPERS AND THIEVES, this novel reimagines the Cinderella story. Christina stopped by to answer some questions for us as part of her tour; take a look below…

1. What is your ideal place to write?  Do you have an office, or do you like to go sit in a coffee shop/library, etc.?

Weirdly enough, my ideal writing place changes depending on the book. For SLIPPERS AND THIEVES, I wrote a lot of it while in bed. (Eep! Did I write that out loud?)

Here’s how it works. I prop up about seven pillows around me in a strategic way and then write, write, write. That said, bed-writing is a relatively new thing. For previous novels, I used to work in coffee shops a lot.

2.  Do you keep a "bible" to help you remember all the characters and details of your world for writing a series?  If so, how do you organize it?  In a notebook, notecards, Google Doc, etc.?

I absolutely keep a bible for each series and I even call it by that name! Everything goes in a word doc that I update both during and after writing new novels. I also keep inspiration images for key characters and places in Pinterest. It’s a lot more visceral than a word doc and I certainly rely on that a ton. I currently have more than 100 boards and 5000 pins.

3.  As a former teacher, one of then best parts of that is hearing back from my students that they got something or learned something from me. Can you name one of your teachers that you feel was important in your life in some way?

There’s one who jumps immediately to mind! In high school, I had an English teacher named Mrs. Skoog. I’ll never forget her, as Mrs. Skoog was the first person to gave me a failing grade on an essay. That rocked my world. I’d always found writing super-easy. And now? I sucked.

Her honesty brought me to a crossroads. Do I love writing enough to work harder at my craft? I debated for a time and then went back at it. After Mrs. Skoog, I never failed another English paper.

4.  Some fun questions:

 Gryffindor, absolutely.

Targaryen. Dragons, baby!

Captain Kirk or Captain Picard?

Picard forever.

Marvel, although DC deserves an honourable mention for Wonder Woman.

Physical book, ebook, or audiobook?

Ebook. I am vicious about reading a chapter and then deleting if I’m not thrilled. Ebook is the only way I find new material without killing tons of trees.

In this moment, I know four things.

One, I just woke up in a hospital bed.

Two, I don’t remember anything about my life before today. Hello, amnesia!

Three, I want out of here now because …

Four, there’s a creepy couple in my room—Luci and Josiah—who claim they’re my sponsor parents. According to them, I’m a seventeen-year-old science prodigy called Wisteria Roberts.

Huh. That name rings zero bells.

Plus, these two make my skin crawl.

“We sponsor you financially,” explains Josiah. “Then in the fall, we’ll fund your senior year of high school at ECHO Academy.” Josiah’s a lanky guy with slicked-back hair, a frayed suit, and an overly large Adam’s apple.

“Afterward, you’ll pay us back with interest,” adds Luci. “Forty percent. Compounded annually.”

Luci is tall and willowy with white-blonde tresses. By contrast, I’m a curvy girl with brown hair and green eyes. I’m also wrapped up mummy-style with bandages. According to Luci and Josiah, I took a spill on Newbury Street and lost my memory. So sketchy.

Some small voice in my head cries that I should be terrified right now. Instead, I just feel numb. Must be a happy side effect of having no memory. Like an amnesia bonus.

“You’ll love living in our dorm,” says Josiah. “In fact, think of me more as your sponsor friend than your sponsor parent.”

At this point, that small part of me screams how Josiah is a disgusting pig. But more of me is still happily numb, so the warnings go nowhere.

Screech, screech, screech!

A chorus of alarm bells sound. Red lights flash in the outer hallway. An overly calm female voice drones through hidden speakers. “Cleansing search commencing … cleansing search commencing. All hail the Authority … All hail the Authority.”

With that, the inner cogs of my brain connect and whir. Feelings return. My blood chills over with fear. I may not recall my personal history, but I do remember how our evil government—what we call the Authority—conducts cleansing searches. They find the sick or poor, label them as undesirable, and slate them for cleansing. It’s a fancy word for murder.

The alarms wail louder. My heart rate skyrockets. If there’s a cleansing search, I’m a slam dunk to be undesirable. Yipes.

Author Interview:

I had a chance to interview Christina Bauer, author of numerous YA fantasy series featuring kick-ass chicks…

1.  Do you always know how the story will end when you start?

I only write books in a series. So to make sure I can get past book one, I always map out the storyline to at least book five before I begin. Even so, sometimes things change once I get into things. Lately, I’ve been having surprise characters show up who then change the story. ***SPOILER ALERT*** For example, in my newest release, CRADLED, some characters from my Angelbound series got into the mix.

Early on in my writing, I used to freak out when I diverged from my original outline. Now, I roll with it. It’s almost always a sign that the book is gaining a real inner life of its own.

2.  Where is your ideal place to write?  Do you have an office, or do you like to go sit in a coffee shop/library, etc.?

I like to write in Starbucks and on a particular spot on my couch with lots of pillows around me. My publishing company, Monster House Books, recently moved to new digs, so I’m writing there a lot lately too.  

3. Do you edit as you go, or wait till you're finished before you edit?  How many times would you say you go over it yourself before having another set of eyes look it over? 

At Monster House, we have a formalized writing process that’s really collaborative. It starts with a written outline and Pinterest boards, then we dive into the writing process. I’m super fortunate in that we have an amazing Editor in Chief, GIE, who gives feedback as I write or she can wait for a full manuscript. The fact that she’s so flexible and insightful really helps me reach my grueling publishing goals. Thank you, GIE!

4.  Are you part of a writers group that gets together and helps each other with their writing?

Again, Monster House has a team of writers and editors who help each other in a formalized way through every step of the writing process. I think it makes for fewer missed deadlines as well as higher quality books.

Author Interview:
1.  What does your writing process look like? Do you know the whole story when you start?  Or do you just start writing and go with it (seat of the pants writing)?  If you plan it out, how do you do that?  Outline, notecards, post-it-notes, etc.?
I use a combination of plotting and making it up. I begin with an idea that I build out on Pinterest in terms of characters and settings. After that, I write an outline. The key goals of that outline generally stay in place, but once I start writing? he characters tell me how they want to reach those gals. That’s when I know I have a character’s voice down—he or she starts telling me what they want. 

2.  How do you come up with your ideas for your stories?
My mind is constantly whirring through ideas and stories. The best way I can explain it is that I’m probably on the autism spectrum and this is my thing. To me, it’s a shock that typical people DON’T spend all day long thinking about stories. What do you do with your time? It boggles the mind.

3.  How long have you been writing?
I was a late talker, but once I could speak, I started telling my stories. I always wanted to be a writer, but then I got into high tech marketing and MONEY. Once I got to be 40, I decided I needed to buckle down and start writing. CROWNED is book thirteen. 

4.  What tips do you have for aspiring writers?
Writing is an endurance sport, but a fun one. Enjoy the journey. 

5.  How important are names in your books?  Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds, or the meaning?  Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
Oh, I put a ton of thought into the names in my books. Usually, the names come from whatever language base of the particular fantasy people or country. For CROWNED, the Necromancer community has a Germanic base. The Creation Casters use Swahili. 

6.  What are your favorite:

Author Interview:
1.  What does your writing process look like? Do you know the whole story when you start?  Or do you just start writing and go with it (seat of the pants writing)?  If you plan it out, how do you do that?  Outline, notecards, post-it-notes, etc.?
>>I start out with an outline that’s called a beat sheet. This is a tool that’s featured in the writing tips book called Save the Cat. With the beat sheet, I break out my novel into three acts, which is a super helpful starting point to establish key milestones/beats. However, once I get into actually writing, then the characters have their own say about how to get from one milestone to the next. I used to hate that part of the process, but now I welcome it. It’s exciting too find out what the characters ‘want,’ if that makes sense!
2.  How do you come up with your ideas for your stories?
>>Excellent question! About half the time, my ideas come from a question. For ANGELBOUND, I wondered what it would be like if those running the afterlife—as in angels, demons, and so on—were as clueless as we were about eternity. For WOLVES AND ROSES, it was a very different process. In truth, I was planning an adult werewolf romance. But then, when I started writing, the first scene had Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, the Evil Queen from Snow White, and Red Riding Hood…they’re in a basement in Midtown Manhattan…and they’re participating in a therapy group for girls who are failing their fairy tale life template. I didn’t even know part of me was working on that story, so it was thrilling when it came out!
3.  How long have you been writing?
>>I started writing when I was six years old, but it took me a while until I got into a groove with my process and support. Since 2013, I’ve published 2-4 books each year, not including audio books. I’m very fortunate to have a great editor and support staff these days.
4.  What tips do you have for aspiring writers?
>>This is a hard business and an easy business. Writing is super tough because you have to work incredibly hard for a long period of time in order to be successful. That said, it’s also easy because it’s not in human nature to work incredibly hard for a long period of time on ANYTHING. So if you can pull off the ‘hard work and patience’ thing, then you’ve got it made.
5.  How important are names in your books?  Do you choose the names based on liking the way it sounds, or the meaning?  Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
>>Oh, I LOVE naming people and places! I often choose a language base for each major society in my books. That way, when I need to name someone, I know it should be German or whatever.  And I do choose names with layered or sometimes silly meanings. For example, in ANGELBOUND, the language base for the Thrac people was Latin. Their word baculum (which is what their swords are called) is also the Latin term for penis. Which, let’s face it, sword fights are a big part sausage party anyway, so that’s why I chose it. I had one reader figure that out so far!
6.  What are your favorite:
Books/authors/genres
>>Lately, I’m really into the ‘Mars needs women’ trope. I’ve also been trying to find good dragon books, but no luck…So I’m writing one for launch in 2019 because DRAGONS!
Movies/TV Shows
>>For movies, I see almost every major release that isn’t horror and-or listed as ‘rotten’ on the Rotten Tomatoes rating site. I especially love fantasy and sci-fi movies. For TV shows, I’ve been super-impressed with Stranger Things and the Dr Who reboot.
Music
>>I’ve been obsessed lately with “Feel it Still” by Portugal The Man. it’s a great tune and the layering of ‘found sound’ in the production is really cool. They put bits of video game music and dogs into the mix…Amazing!
Food/Writing snack
>>”Grande hot mocha, non-fat, no-whip, no foam.” I’m like Norm from Cheers, the folks at the coffee shop start making it for me once I walk in the door.

Chapter One

For the record, there's no better way to spend your honeymoon than lounging naked in bed while playing a little game I like to call, “No, I hated you more.”

Here’s how it works. My now-husband Lincoln and I positively loathed each other when we first met. Back then, Lincoln thought I was a reckless quasi-demon. Meanwhile, I thought he was a super-uptight part-angel demon-hunting douchebag. That’s ancient history now, so today we’re sharing the “best of the worst” moments from our rocky past. Plus, the game is extra-fun because Lincoln is ripped in that lean way swordfighters are, and the comforter is pooled around his hips. Yum. My guy is tall and broad-shouldered with wavy brown hair and lips that scream, kiss me without saying a word. Go, honeymoon!

For Lincoln’s last turn, he just reminded me how I wore sweats to a formal thrax event as a lame means of protest. I agreed that my attire was not in the best taste. Still, in the end I had to remove said sweats and then wear the ugliest white dress ever. Total mitigating factor. Long story short, Lincoln gave a decent entry, but we still don’t have a winner.
