It’s a big deal.

When she’s crowned at just nineteen, the beautiful young monarch is prepared to rule. She’s charming, clever, confident and cunning.

What she isn’t…is married.

It’s her advising council’s first priority. It’s what Parliament is demanding, and what her people want.

Lenora has no desire to tie herself to a man—particularly one who only wants her for her crown. But compromises must be made and royals must do their duty.

Even Queens. Especially them.

**

Years ago, Edward Langdon Richard Dorian Rourke, walked away from his title and country. Now he’s an adventurer—climbing mountains, exploring jungles, going wherever he wants, when he wants—until family devotion brings him home.

And a sacred promise keeps him there.

To Edward, the haughty, guarded little Queen is intriguing, infuriating…and utterly captivating. Wanting her just might drive him mad—or become his greatest adventure.

**

Within the cold, stone walls of the royal palace—mistrust threatens, wills clash, and an undeniable, passionate love will change the future of the monarchy forever.

Every dynasty has a beginning. Every legend starts with a story.

This is theirs.

My Review:
I loved the first books in this series, so a chance to go back and kind of find out where it all began was a bonus that I was very excited to read!   I always love when a favorite series goes back in time to share some of the older characters' back stories.  And that's exactly what we got here.  This book was so hard to put down.  I started reading it only 2 days before I had to post the review, but it wasn't really a problem.  Once I picked it up, I was sucked into Lenora's story, and when I did have to put it down for some reason, I was shocked at how far I'd gone.

Obviously the sexual part of the relationship was a little different in this one since it was set in a different time period, a historical time period where premarital sex was definitely a no-no for a Queen.  That doesn't mean she was a prude, or that there was no steamy bits before the wedding. Which is good, because Emma Chase knows how to write a good sex scene.  But this story was so much more than the romance.  The family and friends and history of the country of Wessco was such a good read for those of us who are fans of the series.

The time period made for something that would have been expected for a single female ruler, that she must be married in order to be taken seriously.  Queen Lenora's younger sister Miriam's wild escapades made it so that Lenora had to actually consider it sooner than she'd planned, and then the actual turnout of said escapades made the whole situation so frustrating. Both things that I was so angry with and for Lenora about.

And then, without giving anything away, let me say that the loss of one character in the story had me in tears.  This wasn't a character we had experiences with from the earlier books in the series. But that didn't matter.  I still had tears in my eyes, and streaming down my cheeks as I read that part of the story.

Once we did get to the romance and steamy bits, I was definitely pleased with how the author handled the time period and our characters.  I loved meeting characters from the earlier books as they phased into the palace, like Fergus, the grumpy butler!  There were several little epilogue parts that i adored as well, each extra moment we were given with Queen Lenora and Prince Edward.  While I think I'd love to follow the next generation, knowing what will happen with their son already from reading the first two books makes it so that I don't know if it would be a very good story.  Probably would be sobbing like a baby at the end if I read and fell in love with those characters the way I did with this book's characters, as well as the other earlier characters.

A great addition to the series.  Yes, it can be a standalone, and yes, it could be read before the first three.  But I suggest you go back and read all three in order and then pick this one up.  I don't think you'll be disappointed.

MYRTLE
I’m a just an erotic woman who likes control.
And edgy sex.
And hard men.
At the same time.
So starting an outreach class at the TDH community center to teach other women how to put the dom in dominatrix was inevitable. Even if I was only doing it to use my boss, Pierce, as my submissive example and pay him back for humiliating me in front of the whole world last summer.
PIERCE
I regret what I did to Myrtle. She’s the best assistant I’ve ever had and I’ll play along—for now—because I want to make things right. But… come on. Me? A submissive? Ha. Myrtle Rothschild might have the upper hand at the moment… but I’m bringing my A-game. I’m gonna take back control.
She can wear her hot, thigh-high latex boots. She can crack that whip all she wants. Hell, I’ll even let her leave marks.
But I’m about to school Ms. Rothschild in the art of who’s the boss.
And she’s about to get Pierce-d.

EXCERPT:
MYRTLE
“Knock, knock?”

I look up from my computer and see Pierce, standing in the doorway of my office.

“Can I come in?” he asks.

“You’re the boss,” I huff.

He smiles. Tightly. Like he’s unsure how to proceed.
It’s just all so different.

“Uh… so how’s things?’

“Things?” I ask, raising one perfect eyebrow. “Do you have a specific example of said things?”

“Well, no,” he says, coming inside to take a seat in front of my desk. “Nothing specific. Just… wondering if you have time for a special project.”

We both look at my desk. Which doesn’t have a single file on it. Not even one sheet of paper. My Post-Its pad is still crisp and every pencil in my little pencil can is sharp. I think it’s pretty obvious that I do nothing in here all day.

But I’m still angry at him. So if he thinks I’m gonna be the first to admit I don’t actually have a job to do and I’m just wasting corporate money, he’s mistaken.

“I’m pretty busy,” I say.

“Yeah,” he says, sighing. “I know. And I don’t want to take advantage or anything, but I could use your help.”

I have my reading glasses on, so I do that head-tilt thing where you look down your nose at someone. “With what?”

He looks around. Plucks a pencil out of the pencil jar. Taps it to his head as he thinks.
He doesn’t have a project for me. He just wanted to come in here and feel me out.

We both know this.

But then he gets an idea. I swear I can see the little light bulb go off in his head. “The Halloween party.”

“What about it?”

“We… need… well…”

“Pierce?”

“What?”

“You don’t have a project for me. And I don’t even have a job here.”

“Of course you do! You’re the VP—”

“Of social media, I know. The little plaque outside my office says so. But we both know there’s no social media department. Not to mention, I’m not even on social media and have no idea how it even works.”

“You don’t have socials? How did I not know that?”

“Well, you did think I was the Sexpert. So I’m just going to assume you don’t actually know anything about me.”

“How can you still be pissed at me? It’s been months! I gave you a promotion, and an office, and—”

“Again,” I say, putting up a hand to cut him off, “I do realize all that. And once again, it’s all meaningless. You don’t even know what a social media department does.”

“It’s not meaningless.” He tugs on his suit coat. “And I’m well-versed in socials. I was Snapchatting just last night.”

“With who?”

“Uh…” He looks over his shoulder, like he needs a second to think, then says, “Valerie. She’s my chat friend now.”

“You know I can tell when you lie, right? Your left eye does this little wink thing every time.”

He huffs, then leans forward in his chair. “How long will you continue to do this?”

“Do what?”

“Punish me.”

I laugh. Stop. Then laugh again. It’s a little bit of a guffaw with a healthy dose of maniacal thrown in for good measure. “This is not me trying to punish you, Pierce. This is me biding my time.”

He lifts up one eyebrow. “Biding your time until… what?”

“Until I have the perfect diabolical plan to pay you back.”

He sits back in his chair, breathes deep. “So that’s what you need? Payback?”

“I was publicly humiliated. A woman doesn’t just get over it, Pierce.”

He winces when I snarl his name. “You hate me.”

“People look at me funny now, you do realize that?”

“Look at you funny how?”

“Like I’m hiding some secret sexual fetish side.”

“Aren’t you?”

“What do you want?”

“I mean, you do come off as… kind of a…”

“A what?”

“You know. Like you’re into the whole Red Room spanking thing, right?”

“Anastasia Steele? You’re comparing me to Anastasia Steele? Please.”

“Well, you wear those tight pencil skirts… and those sexy secretary glasses. Plus, I know you read that smut in here. You don’t even use an eReader. Everyone can see the covers. I used to have little Christian Grey fantasies when you used to look at me. Before… ya know, you decided to hate me.”

I laugh. And it’s not even maniacal. It’s real.

“Why is that funny?”

“My dearest Pierce,” I say, still chuckling, “you are no Christian Grey. If anyone is Mr. Grey in this relationship, it’s me.”

Book info:
TitleLittle White Lies
Author:  Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Genre:  YA Mystery
Release Date:  November 6th, 2018
Publisher:  Disney/Freeform
Source:  Physical ARC received from publisher for review, which did not influence my opinion.
My rating: 4 stars

Synopsis:
"I'm not saying this is Sawyer's fault," the prim and proper one said delicately. "But."

Eighteen-year-old auto mechanic Sawyer Taft did not expect her estranged grandmother to show up at her apartment door and offer her a six-figure contract to participate in debutante season. And she definitely never imagined she would accept. But when she realizes that immersing herself in her grandmother's "society" might mean discovering the answer to the biggest mystery of her life-her father's identity-she signs on the dotted line and braces herself for a year of makeovers, big dresses, bigger egos, and a whole lot of bless your heart. The one thing she doesn't expect to find is friendship, but as she's drawn into a group of debutantes with scandalous, dangerous secrets of their own, Sawyer quickly discovers that her family isn't the only mainstay of high society with skeletons in their closet. There are people in her grandmother's glittering world who are not what they appear, and no one wants Sawyer poking her nose into the past. As she navigates the twisted relationships between her new friends and their powerful parents, Sawyer's search for the truth about her own origins is just the beginning.

Set in the world of debutante balls, grand estates and rolling green hills, Little White Lies combines a charming setting, a classic fish-out-of-water story, and the sort of layered mystery only author Jennifer Lynn Barnes can pull off.

My Review:
This is my first book by this author, other than a short story she had in the anthology called Enthralled:   Paranormal Diversions.   I don't remember which story was hers, however.  Anyway, this story was presented to me as a mix of Gilmore Girls and Pretty Little Liars gone Southern.  I'm not a reader or watcher of either of those, but I understand the general gist of what they are about.  The synopsis was intriguing for sure.  And when I picked it up, I was sucked right into the story.  There were a lot of twists and turns in this, the final twist being a huge one out of nowhere!  I loved that!

Sawyer's snarkiness, especially her take as she was dropped into this debutante world, was one of my favorite parts of the story.  The characters were all great in this as well.  Not only were our four main debutante characters given incredible back stories, but all of them were even made so that you could feel sympathy for them, even if they came across as ruthless or villains at first.

The book switched between the present, where the four girls, Sawyer, Lily, Sadie-Grace, and Campbell were all in a jail cell; and the past starting when Sawyer first was brought into the midst of all this intrigue and wealthy people.  The present portions are kind of told from the viewpoint of one of the police officers, Mackie.  Like him, I spent the book reading to find out just which of the felonious actions the girls made landed them in that cell.  When you find out just how it happened, it is a little bit surprising and comical.

While this may be my first time with the author, I have had her books in my library for my students to check out.  Not only will I be adding this one with budget money, I will now be able to personally recommend her books based on my own enjoyment of them.  I look forward to reading more from Jennifer Lynn Barnes as well  If you like a good mystery, and enjoy lots of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat as you read, this is the next book you need to pick up!

My Review:
I loved the first book in the series, I Dare You, and so I was very excited to read this next book in the series, and see which of the guys or girls we might have met in the first book that we'd get to see fall in love next.   In this story we have Maverick from book 1's friend Ryker, the quarterback.  And then we had Penelope, who was a writer, that had written an article about the whole scandal from the last book, one that called out Maverick and Ryker both.  She did also write an article later that was part retraction, part clearing up of what happened.  I loved the dynamic between Ryker and Penelope.

Part of what I loved the most was Penelope herself.  I mean, she was an unashamed fan of Twilight, just like I am.  And it sounds like she dressed the same way I would.  Ryker was funny, especially in his own little way of being awkward and not as suave around Penelope as he would be around other girls.  There were two aspects of this story that you get from the synopsis that are well-used in romance or other stories, the dating to make someone else jealous when they really liked each other, as well as the bet to sleep with the girl before he comes to really like her.  However, both of them were done in ways that to me were unique from the other stories I've read before, in that they weren't carried out the same way and to the exact letter of what those storylines usually entail.

Then let's talk about Ryker.  Normally I'm not a fan of a lot of hair on guys, but there was something about the way Ryker was described, and even how Penelope called him baby llama that was endearing for me.  It stuck with me so much that I was even thinking about him being a new favorite book boyfriend enough that when I saw knick-knacks with llamas on them when I was out shopping today I considered buying them.  The fact that I was thinking about the story when I wasn't reading it proves to me that it was one I'll be recommending from now on.  Which most of the books by this author that I've read are like that.  As far as I know there are only 2 books in the series, but since this is a football team, and there were some other players, like Blaze for example, I'm hoping for at least one more book?  You should definitely give this one a try if you like sweet, funny, new adult sports romances.

L-L-L-Little Reviews - Kiss and Make Up Series #1-3 by Sara Ney

So, while I did go ahead and post my reviews of the first two books in this series on retailers as I read them, I wanted to do one big post on my blog of all three together. So that's what this one is!  All of these are Sports romances, we have hockey players for our leading men.  And while the first one is YA, I'd call the 2nd two more NA.  Also, I received all three of these from InkSlinger PR for reviews, which did not influence my opinion in any way.

Kissing in Cars:
Release Date:  January 26th, 2014
Order in Series:  #1
My rating:  4.5 stars

So this one was really pretty close to a YA, whereas I'd call the other two in the series New Adult.   I know a lot of people will probably complain about how this is written, but honestly it flows a lot like how I think. And to me, it sounded perfectly like the way I'd imagine a teenager thinks, or the way at least I thought as a teenager. So much about it cracked me up. I was laughing out loud sitting in public. There were a few things that were predictable, another thing people might have issues with. Personally though, I found that those really were done almost tongue-in-cheek, or they felt like they were done that way. Reminds me of how the scary things happened in the Scream movie franchise. Then there is the part where Weston does basically the same exact thing by telling people Molly is not his girlfriend, loudly, adamantly. She'd already told him once about doing something like that, not just told him, but gotten really mad at him about it. So for him to do it again, I basically called him a dumbass. He'd fit well into the future douchebag series. And as I am reading book 2 in the series right now, Weston is keeping up with that, although loving his girl now.

In a way this reminded me of my own writing. At least how I think I write, others who read my writing may not agree. But it gave me hope to keep writing, because I love this author, and so if I do, and I know others do, maybe I can do something with my writing as well.

Now, I think the cover above is the newest, but I like the one below better.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
Will she, or won't she...

Studious and (mostly) sensible, the only thing Molly Wakefield wants to do is get through Senior Year and graduate. Well, that and hit the beach in her spare time. Okay, fine - and go shopping every once in a while for a new dress... (and who could blame her?)

And things are going according to plan - until the day she spies Weston McGrath, handsome star athlete and scholar, spying on her in study hall.

A tad creepy? Maybe.
Thrilling? Absolutely.

You see, Weston McGrath happens to be one guy no one can get close to.

Despite her best efforts to avoid it (because let's face it - the guy isn't exactly "boyfriend material") Mollly and Weston form a friendship.
And more....
Sort of.
But it's a friendship that comes with a price - because Weston just cannot seem to stop screwing things up. Or saying all the wrong things. Possibly in that order...
And who has time for an 18 year old "fixer-upper" that should know better?
Not Molly.
Or does she?

He Kissed Me First:
Release Date:  November 27th, 2014
Order in Series:  #2
My rating:  4.5 stars

Book 2 was really funny because I already knew Molly and Weston, and I have to say that I adored Weston in this one. While he was definitely pretty much whipped/in love, whatever you want to call it, he was still an annoying boy. I laughed so hard out loud so many times during this book! Matthew was definitely fitting of the douchebag title that Ney's other series uses to describe its leading men. You'd start to think he was coming over to be a good guy, then out would pop the jerk again. There were definitely times I wanted to shake Cece a little, but that seems to happen a lot in romance books, so that's nothing bad. This one was definitely a lot different from the first book, in that was set in a high school, and this one is two people almost past what I'd consider even new adult, more just adult. But with the college aspect it could stay as a new adult level. And the amount of steam in it was definitely on the lower range, or should I say there just was less of it?

Weston and Matthew's friendship also cracked me up. I love how they interacted. The date that Matthew took Cece on to the hockey game and the players that came up and harassed him about it were cute. Definitely a page turner that I couldn't seem to stop reading! On to book 3!  (Oh yeah, same thing, I like both covers, kind of the original below better though!)

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
"Trust me - If there's one thing I'm not attracted to, it's an arrogant, selfish and foul-mouth hockey player. I know what I want, and Matthew Wakefield isn't it." - Cecelia Carter

From the first moment they laid eyes on each other, all Cecelia Carter and Matthew Wakefield do is bicker. Fight. Even though he is her roommates brother, Cece just can't stand the sight of him, and Matthew - well. He could never resist a challenge...

That can't be a good combination, can it?
But sometimes, love happens when you least expect it.

This book is intended for those 17 and older - If you're offended by "F" bombs, sarcasm, sexual situations and Alpha Male jackasses - this book is not for you...

A Kiss Like This:
Release Date:  May 31st, 2015
Order in Series:  #3
My rating:  4.5 stars

All three of these stories were really good.  This book actually made me think that maybe I should give shy guys a little more of a chance. But the awkwardness that the two faced in this book is so much what I dread and have dealt with in my own life as a shy person on a date with a shy guy.  Unfortunately the shy guys I went out with were not hot hockey players like Caleb is.  So many times as I read this though, I could feel the awkwardness coming off the page, and it felt like a chapter of my own life in that way.  For me that made it so perfect and not necessarily easy to read, but easy in that I was extremely familiar in the way those things go.  Now, I knew that the whole ring thing was going to come back and bite Caleb in the end. But I also feel that Abby definitely overreacted about that whole situation.  As you may know from my other reviews though, that is something that I realize is often a standard part of a romance novel, to add that last bit of drama needed.  So no matter how frustrating it is for me, I can get over it when I love the rest of the story so much, and realize it is for that very purpose.

Something I love about series like these is getting those supporting characters into main character roles in future books, and then it makes me want to go back and read the earlier books, knowing what I know now about them.  Of course their bits and pieces from the earlier stories help to make their own books more humorous at time as you remember what they'd done in the past.

I have to admit that when I first discovered this author with the 3rd book in her How to Date a Douchebag series, I just assumed that there would be a ton of her past stories to go back and read once I fell in love with her writing.  There wasn't a ton out there, so having these suggested and maybe re-released or re-publicized was great for me, as I wait for more books to come!  Sara Ney is definitely an auto-buy/read author for me!  I do have to say though, unlike the first two books in the series, there isn't an "original" cover for me to share with you.  Just the one you see above.  Although there is this one below as well.  Not sure which is the most accurate one, although I might like the one below best.

Here is the blurb from Goodreads:
ABIGAIL DARLINGTON IS AWKWARD…

She will never be “that” girl. You know the one: that girl on campus, confident in her own skin. Always saying the right things. Putting herself out there. Knows how to talk to a guy without stammering.

Nope. Shy but clever, and easily embarrassed, Abby is fine being the wallflower in her circle of outgoing, beautiful friends; she would rather read about a sexy book boyfriend than actually have a live, breathing one.

…BUT CALEB LOCKHART IS WORSE.

Star goaltender for the University’s hockey team, Caleb is quiet and broody, preferring the solitude of his orderly, regimented life. He doesn’t like, or need people—and plans to keep it that way. One more year left of hockey and he’ll be long gone.

AWKWARD NEVER LOOKED SO GOOD.

Both their lives change the day that Abigail falls for Caleb. Well, falls directly on top of him, to be accurate. Because sometimes we don’t settle into love.

We fall there.

WARNING: This book contains cursing, and LOTS of it. It also has sex, uncomfortable sexual situations, and secondary characters who say some really inappropriate shit. RATING: R

Sunday Post #91 and Stacking the Shelves October 28th, 2018

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted  @ Caffeinated Book Reviewer. It’s a chance to share news ~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead. See rules here: Sunday Post Meme.  Two weeks in a row!  Maybe I'm going to start fitting these in again. Who knows.

Had my birthday dinners with both of my families this week.  Cupcakes with my mom, stepdad, brother, sister-in-law and niece and nephew.  Got a cute pumpkin my 6 year old niece decorated for me, as well as a sweet necklace that said Auntie Lisa on it.  I don't wear necklaces that much, but I'm going to try to wear this one more often.

Then at my dad's side, with him, my stepmom, one of my sister's and her boyfriend's son, we went to eat at Wahlburgers, although I was a little disappointed in how their service had gone down in the month they'd been open.  We had cake and played a strategy board game.  I got gift cards to AMC movie theaters as well as one to Barnes and Noble.  Fun!  Also, got to love this fun card from my sister!

Had a really busy last couple of week days in the library at the school where I work.  My co-librarian was presenting at the state librarians' conference, so I was alone, and one of those days was CRAZY!  Everyone needed to use the library at the same time.  Yet few realized how busy it would be.

Today I went to the library and spent some time working on getting as much blogging done as I could, getting past due reviews done, 7 of them to be specific, so that I could get ready to start NaNoWriMo on Thursday.  I've got my story idea, just getting it all ready and organized for writing.

Here's what you might have missed on the blog this week:

What's coming up this week on the blog, of course along with hopefully me having some writing time:

Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews.  It is a way for us to share the new books we have collected.  Just a few to share this week.

Got this ARC in the mail this week from the publisher.  I hadn't heard about it before, but it sounds good, so I can't wait!

Not a great picture I guess.  Earlier last week I bought a couple books to help with my writing.  I'd constantly heard from authors at conventions that the book Save the Cat! was one that was great to help with writing, even thought it was for screenplays.  Recently one specifically for novels came out, so I bought it.  I also found a writing prompt for romance book at the same time, so bought it. Then today with my Barnes and Noble gift card, I was looking for a romance book to buy, and while I had an idea what I wanted, one of my coworkers recommended Intercepted, and since she and I have been gushing over how much we love the same books lately, I decided that was the one to pick up.

That's my weekly wrap up and book haul for last week.  How was your last week?
