Book Beginning: Sever (Chemical Garden Trilogy #3) by Lauren DeStefano

This is a meme I've seen others do, but haven't tried myself yet.  So I'm going to join Rose City Reader this Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book I am reading, along with my initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. It is to include the title of the book and the author's name.

"In the atlas the river still flows.  The thin line of it carries cargo to a destination that no longer exists.  We share a name, the river and I; if there's a reason for this, it died with my parents."

I think this sentence has a lot of foreshadowing for the story, as well as giving some more background from the past books.  From the point in the book where I am currently reading, we see that this river may or may not really be gone now.  We are left wondering how much of the history has been changed by the men in charge of this society, and how much of the world may really still be out there.

How did the book you're currently reading begin?  What do you take from the beginning of my book?
